 European Plans to Devastate Russia Horribly Backfire

One of the pleasures of traveling to the United Kingdom was that one had a choice of newspapers to read.  There was not the same appalling lack of choice that one finds in Australia where the Rupert Murdoch empire controls at least 70% of the print newspaper choice. There is no other country of which I am aware where one newspaper chain holds such a stranglehold on the public’s choice of reading options.

Returning to the United Kingdom after a covid induced three-year absence to visit family and friends was therefore a much-anticipated newspaper reading pleasure. Alas, it was not to be. The British print media these days all sing from the same anti-Russian song sheet. There was never much love between the Russians and the English, but the war in Ukraine has risen animosity to new heights.

The British, despite their greatly depleted military numbers and equipment these days, became under Britain’s outgoing prime minister, Boris Johnson, the most fervid of the anti-Russian brigade of European nations. One is always hesitant to include the Americans in that list. Opinion polls in the United States indicate that the vast majority could not locate Ukraine on a map. The general United States public seems to have a marked lack of enthusiasm for their government’s foreign adventures.

The Europeans however, are different. They have no trouble locating Ukraine on a map and seem to be if not enthusiastic supporters of their government’s involvement in the anti-Russian policies being pursued by those governments at least in tacit support of what those governments were up to.  Until very recently!

The mood is changing, brought on in no small part by the growing realisation that they are facing a potentially very cold winter. For this, they have only themselves to blame.  The European public remained quiet while their governments seized hundreds of billions of dollars of Russia’s foreign earnings, a theft incidentally almost totally disregarded by the Australian media.

Back in February of this year when the Russians moved their military forces into the Donbass region, European politicians, media and large sections of the public were confident that the freeze they placed on Russian assets would put such enormous pressure on President Putin that he would be forced from office. They seemed oblivious to the fact that in Russian terms Putin is a cautious moderate and that his replacement could easily be someone more hard-nosed about the Europeans stealing their financial reserves and blatantly interfering in their internal politics.

In the event, Putin was never threatened with being replaced.  His personal popularity among the Russian public sits comfortably between 75% and 80% approval.  This “Putin must go” nonsense was followed in quick time by speculation about his health.  That Putin was terminally ill from cancer seemed the most popular fantasy promoted by the western media.

This particular story shared time with stories about his alleged fabulous wealth said to equal in the tens of billions of dollars. It also enjoyed a short life as it drew no more than a collective yawn from the Russian public who had been fed variations on this story for years.

The European papers were full of stories about how their governments were going to cut off Russian energy supplies.  No-one thought to ask the serious question of where the replacements were to be found.  Wild speculation ensued about how the Middle East was going to provide for the missing millions of tons of Russian energy until those countries not so quietly told the Europeans they were dreaming.  Not only were there no such magic reserves available, what they did have was of a different type from the Russian gas and would need to be further refined before they could be used.  Unfortunately for the Europeans, they had no means of conducting the additional refining and building the means to do so would take at least two years.

The Russians of course were not sitting idly by waiting for the Europeans to make up their minds. They were actively planning to redirect their abundant gas supplies eastward, to the welcoming arms of India and China among other customers. The Europeans, who had remained silent while the Canadians created difficulties with the repair of vital machinery for processing the gas, suddenly realised that the Russians, far from being devastated by Europe playing both sides of the fence, were making lucrative deals with alternative markets and that the Europeans could simply freeze for all they cared.

European unity at this point began to collapse. One by one a number of countries began to peel off from the image of European solidarity and not so quietly negotiate their own deals with the Russians.  They were led by the Hungarians, whose President Victor Orban has long gone out on the European limb, looking after his own country’s interests rather than signing up to some anti-Russian fantasy.  The position of Ursula von der Leyen the European President who had led the anti-Russian fanfare suddenly looked more and more precarious.

Germany’s Chancellor Schultz is also looking more and more precarious.  His anti-Russian stance has been driven by the Green Party whose leader has been the foreign minister.  Her position too now looks precarious.  The powerful German industrial groups are making their displeasure with the government’s policies abundantly clear as German industry has gone into free fall as a consequence of the Russian counter-sanctions.

The European view of making life difficult for the Russians in general and President Putin, in particular, has suddenly gone totally pear-shaped, and quite frankly, they seem unable to come up with a solution. Germany now has falling productivity and rapidly rising unemployment.  It is a situation outside their modern memory and they frankly have no ready solution.

Frankly, it is difficult to feel in the least bit sorry for the European position. They sat idly by for eight years while the Ukrainians ignored the terms of the Minsk agreements. This had a devastating impact on the Donbass, in which at least 16,000 citizens were killed and more than one million forced into exile.

The Russian occupation of the Donbass did not come out of the blue, but followed years of violation by the Ukrainians of the agreement designed to resolve the difficulties. The Ukraine government occupied the Donbass with more than 80,000 troops, banned the use of their native Russian language, and abolished eight political parties, all of which was ignored by the western governments, including Australia, who pretended that Ukraine’s President was a model of democracy unfairly invaded by the Russians., who wanted to take over his country and, horror of horrors, keep Crimea, that Khrushchev had gifted to them in 1954 (without consulting the Crimean people).

That war is rapidly reaching its endpoint. The Ukrainian military is collapsing, suffering horrendous losses. Those countries, including Australia, that have supplied Ukraine with weapons, seem under the impression that it is a cost-free exercise to do so.  They are in for a rude shock and frankly, they have only themselves to blame.

The economic shock will be greater for the Europeans who allowed themselves to be sucked into a United States Proxy war who thought it was smart to let someone else do all the fighting and dying in a vain attempt to fatally weaken Russia. Our politicians are, it seems, no smarter than the previous government who thought that asking “how high” when the Americans said “jump” was a smart foreign policy.

This country, like the Europeans, is finding out the hard way that there are no easy options.

The fake news is full of their fake narratives about the war, and certainly this drives the public “perception” ( can’t think of a better word sorry ), but the reality as I heard and understood it was that the Eurozone froze Russia’s bank accounts so that he required to be paid in roubles not Euros and this was the sticking point, not any sort of malice or petulance from Putin. As far as I heard and understood Putin was happy to keep using the Nordstream joint venture pipelines as long as he was paid for the gas. It would appear Princess Ursula and others were happy to overlook the needs of their commoners, “Let them eat ice”, as it were.

The subject is too big to explain in a single comment but I would disagree with the basic premise and suggest that the sanctions on Russia were never meant to harm Russia – they are the final checkmate move in the long-planned genocide of the European civilisation according to the Kalergi Plan).

      • No I don’t kvetch, I never heard the word before. As usual the form of diatribe is to get everyone off the hook except the ubiquitous jews, it’s repetitive and intellectually feeble and as it’s an open forum I accept it on those terms but not without debate. Unfortunately the Jufish sometimes has a fit of rage and launches a demented ad hominem attack, which only makes his very dubious case so much weaker.
        Royals such as his beloved Romanovs may as individuals have felt closer to their commoners for enduring some episode of adversity together with them but it doesn’t alter the fact they were royals and would eventually turn on the commoners. QE2 could be a case in point, exercising a lot of restraint, in particular restraining the “more traditional” Philip, who if he was allowed might have done things quite differently.
        Jews are good servants from the priests set up with the death of Jesus all the way through to Larry Fink and Zuckerberg. But no matter how many times I tell the Ju        fish that the CEO of a company does not own the company, he won’t care, because it doesn’t suit his agenda.     An excellent article by Mark Chapman (from Canada). Delightfully written with a touch of sarcasm but much information about the self-inflicted ‘gas supply crisis’. Over 200 comments as I share this. I find the site has its historical biases but this article is worth perusing (as well as the comments) just to get a hint of how much we don’t now about the geopolitical machinations on this topic.

    I repeat – there is no way these actions by EU ‘leaders’ were ever intended to hurt Russia.

    The site creator ‘Yalensis’ has been providing a daily article for each and every day of the ‘Special Operation’ by Russia/Putin into (Russian) Donbass and the Ukraine. The latest article is Day 178 – almost SIX MONTHS!

    It occurred to me that the ‘Special Operation’ that Germany/Hitler conducted into the German Danzig region and city (without otherwise threatening Poland itself) lasted only THREE WEEKS – or TWENTY-ONE DAYS.

    Everybody should then have just stayed home – except that those controlling the foreign policy of both Britain AND the US had set the trap and had their puppet Churchill declare WWII. No wonder they are comparing Zelensky with Churchill.
