The Difference between Sampson and Holofernes

(L) Judith Slays Holofernes  — Luca Cranach, 1550, (R) Delilah gets the “hair” secret  — Luca Giordano, 1600s

From the Book of Judges, Chapter 16

One day Samson went to Gaza, where he saw a prostitute. He went in to spend the night with her.  The people of Gaza were told, “Samson is here!” So they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate.

They made no move during the night, saying, “At dawn we’ll kill him.”

But Samson lay there only until the middle of the night. Then he got up and took hold of the doors of the city gate, together with the two posts, and tore them loose, bar and all.

He lifted them to his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.

Some time later, he fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah. The rulers of the Philistines went to her and said, “See if you can lure him into showing you the secret of his great strength and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver.”

So Delilah said to Samson, “Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued.”

Samson answered her, “If anyone ties me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”

Then the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she tied him with them. With men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”

But he snapped the bowstrings as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.

Then Delilah said to Samson, “You have made a fool of me; you lied to me. Come now, tell me how you can be tied.”

He said, “If anyone ties me securely with new ropes that have never been used, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”

So Delilah took new ropes and tied him with them. Then, with men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” But he snapped the ropes off his arms as if they were threads.

Delilah then said to Samson, “All this time you have been making a fool of me and lying to me. Tell me how you can be tied.”

He replied, “If you weave the seven braids of my head into the fabric on the loom and tighten it with the pin, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”

So while he was sleeping, Delilah took the seven braids of his head, wove them into the fabric and tightened it with the pin.

Again she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” He awoke from his sleep and pulled up the pin and the loom, with the fabric.

Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when you won’t confide in me? This is the third time you have made a fool of me and haven’t told me the secret of your great strength.”

With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was sick to death of it.

So he told her everything. “No razor has ever been used on my head,” he said, “because I have been a Nazirite dedicated to God from my mother’s womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.”

When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, “Come back once more; he has told me everything.” So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands.

After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him, And his strength left him.

Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”

He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.

Then the Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza. Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding grain in the prison.  But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.

Now the rulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate, saying, “Our god has delivered Samson, our enemy, into our hands.”

When the people saw him, they praised their god, saying,

“Our god has delivered our enemy into our hands,
the one who laid waste our land  and multiplied our slain.”

While they were in high spirits, they shouted, “Bring out Samson to entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and he performed for them.

When they stood him among the pillars, Samson said to the servant who held his hand, “Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them.”

Now the temple was crowded with men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.”

Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!”

Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.

Then his brothers and his father’s whole family went down to get him. They brought him back and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father.

He had led Israel for twenty years.

  1. What is the moral of the story? Don’t trust a female prostitute with your inner secrets.

Delilah (/dɪˈlaɪlə/; Hebrew: דלילה‎ (meaning “She dwindles”)[1] Dəlilah, Dəlila, Tiberian Hebrew Dəlilah; Arabic Dalilah; Greek Δαλιδά Dalida; meaning “faithless one”) is a woman mentioned in the sixteenth chapter of the Book of Judges in the Hebrew Bible.[2] She is loved by Samson,[2] a Nazirite who possesses great strength[3] and serves as the final Judge of Israel.[4] Delilah is bribed by the lords of the Philistines to discover the source of his strength. After three failed attempts at doing so, she finally goads Samson into telling her that his vigor is derived from his hair. As he sleeps, Delilah orders a servant to cut Samson’s hair, thereby enabling her to turn him over to the Philistines.

Delilah has been the subject of both rabbinic and Christian commentary; rabbinic literature identifies her with Micah’s mother in the biblical narrative of Micah’s Idol, while some Christians have compared her to Judas Iscariot, the man who betrayed Jesus. Scholars have noted similarities between Delilah and other women in the Bible, such as Jael and Judith, and have discussed the question of whether the story of Samson’s relationship with Delilah displays a negative attitude towards foreigners. Notable depictions of Delilah include John Milton’s closet drama Samson Agonistes and Cecil B. DeMille’s 1949 Hollywood film Samson and Delilah. Her name has become associated with treacherous and voluptuous women.

A passage from “Did Moses Exist: The Myth of the Israelite Lawgiver” by D. M Murdock (aka Acharya S)

      “Samson the Sun

As a blatant example of how a sun god has been turned into a biblical hero, we can cite the story of Sampson or Samson (Jdg 13–16), written שמשון Shimshown, meaning “like the sun.” (ref 1364) The first three letters of Samson are שמש sh.m.sh, and we noted previously the relationship also to the Semitic sun goddess Shapash.

Samson’s story possesses a number of solar and lunar elements, such as the tearing down of the two pillars of the temple, a solar motif likewise found in the myth of Hercules/Herakles. In this myth, the Greek son of Zeus/God legendarily erects the two “columns” or mountains on either side of the Strait of Gibraltar, the western edge of the world and opening to the underworld, where the sun sets.(ref 1365) This same theme can be seen in the images of Ur-Nammu, Shamash and other figures between two mountains and/or columns.

Another soli-lunar theme is the loss of strength when the sun god or solar hero’s “hair” or rays are cut by the moon goddess, the significance of the story of Samson and Delilah (Jdg 16:19).”

Was Jonah Swallowed by a Whale? (Abstract click on link for full article. A great article)

    Not Necessarily A Whale

To begin with we must note that the Hebrew word does not necessarily correspond to our modern designation whale. It simply means a large sea creature and could refer to anything found in the sea. Old Testament authority Gleason Archer writes:

Incidentally, it should be observed that the Hebrew text of Jonah 2:1 actually reads dag gadol, or “great fish” rather than a technical term for “whale.” But since Hebrew possessed no special word for “whale,” and since no true fish – as opposed to a marine mammal – ague to be serviceable here, since it could also mean shark, sea serpent, or even dragon (Gleason Archer, Jr., A Survey of Old Testament Introduction, Revised edition, Chicago: Moody Press, 1974, p. 314).

Mae West Sings Samson And Delilah

But seriously – Sampson, realising that the Philistines were always lurking in the closet waiting to be called “to come upon him”, especially after the third time, should have dealt with them in this way … then if they were still in there they would not be happy!

    • Berry, while I continue to watch the world go insane, at least I could always rely upon ‘3D physical reality’ to help keep me grounded. Now, I can’t even rely upon that anymore. I’ve been looking into this ‘Mandela Effect’ for a couple of years and although there are numerous theories about what is going on, bugger if know what it is about. I think I’m getting closer to the truth, but I could be completely wrong.

I’ll give the forum a few links so if anyone is interested in doing their own investigations, they’ve at least got a start. Here’s a link to a webpage that was specifically set up to try and figure it out. It’s been around for years and has lots of theories and anecdotes –

Here’s a 48 minute interview with the software designer that was having all the trouble with inventory control and made that video to explain it to his customers. It is a good interview with someone that is up to speed on the ME. –

Here’s a video where a guy has ‘stepped through the looking glass’ and freaked out. Like me, he has a specific memory of the Rock of Gibraltar being at the mouth of the StraightS of Gibraltar. It was an island about halfway across the straights and more towards the Atlantic Ocean. Now the bloody thing is inside the Mediterranean and attached to Spain. I handled that shift a lot better than he does, LOL! – (when the ‘light comes on’, it can really freak people out!)

  3. The Samson option is more relevant today than in history. It holds everyone to ransom.
It is the world’s Achille’s heel and can put the big bang theory into practise at anytime.
The invention of nuclear energy was the beginning of the dark age we live in. It’s all about money guns drugs oil and control or else.

Publisher Random House says, on the inside folds of the cover, that The Samson Option “reveals many startling events,” among them:
How Israel stole United States satellite reconnaissance intelligence and used it to target the Soviet Union.
How Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir directed that some of the intelligence stolen by American Jonathan Pollard, who spied for Israel, be turned over to the Soviet Union.
How Israel created a false control room at the Dimona nuclear facility to hide from American nuclear inspectors its use in creating nuclear weapons.

  5. THE SAMSON OPTION: WILL ISRAEL NUKE GERMANY AND IRAN?
    https://thecross-roads.org/race-culture-nation/113-the-samson-option-will-israel-nuke-germany-and-iran
According to The Times of Israel an opinion piece on the right-wing Israel National News Site has called for the nuclear destruction of Iran and Germany. (The Times of Israel, March 11, 2015) The opinion piece is by one Chen Ben-Flihahu who wrote: “If Israel does not walk in the ways of God’s Bible it will receive a heavy punishment of near complete destruction and doom and only a view will be saved”. Israel, for instance, faces an existential threat from Iran who has threatened Israel with annihilation. “If (an enemy) rises up to destroy you, rise earlier to destroy him: twenty, thirty nuclear bombs will do to assure the job gets done”.

Why destroy Germany which is now a staunch ally of Israel? Purely for revenge for the Holocaust, thus reversing the Final Solution: “twenty, thirty atomic bombs on Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Nuremberg, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Dresden, Dortmund and so on to assure the job gets done. And the land will be quiet for 1000 years”.

The Samson option has been described by leading Israeli military historian Martin van Creveld as follows: “We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets by our airforce. Let me quote General Moshe Dayan: “Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother”. I consider it all hopeless at this point. We shall have to try to prevent things from coming to that if at all possible. Our armed forces, however, are not the 30th strongest in the world, but rather the second or third. We have the capacity to take the world down with us. And I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under”. (Quoted in David Hirst, “The Gun and the Olive Branch” (2003), at “Samson Option”, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samson_Option).

Israel has Already Used the Threat of Nuclear War: Atomic Blackmail

Putin’s attempts to cool matters down is ignored by Washington who responds by beating “the drums of war louder”. But while Iran could destroy Israel, Russia and China have the capacity to destroy not only America, but the rest of the West.

    • As the biblical Samson was an elected judge whose jurisdiction didn’t extend beyond civil disputes and border control and the modern State of Israel is run by non-elected shadowmen who control pretty much every aspect of the lives of those who happen to be living there, the so-called “Samson effect” strikes me as being nothing more than the brainchild of some journalist with a few screws loose: just one more stupid catch-phrase parroted ad nauseum
