Sad to say, the US Senate voted today, January 31, 2020 to frustrate the proper trial procedure in the impeachment of President Trump, by not allowing witnesses to be brought forward. It’s bad for America, and quite possibly some people in other countries will feel keenly disappointed.
In the US, the real gravity of this loss of Rule of Law gets glossed over by pointing to “politics.” For instance, individual senators were “worried about their re-election.” Or, looking back to 2017, it’s said that President Trump had to put up with persecution about “the Russian probe.” I believe he was indeed persecuted but that is no excuse for having a trial that is not a real trial.
I believe we can refuse to let this turn into a precedent by showing that citizens do not approve. I made my protest yesterday by condemning the behavior of one of the president’s lawyers, Professor Alan Dershowitz. Here is the letter I sent to the appropriate board of licensing of lawyers in Boston:
January 30, 2020
To the Massachusetts Office of the Bar Counsel

Disciplining Alan Dershowitz
Please take immediate action to disbar Alan Dershowitz — no matter that he is a “professor of law” — from practicing at the Massachusetts Bar.
He has publicly stated, during the Impeachment trial of the president of the United States, on January 29, 2020, that a president can do what he likes, while acting in his official capacity, as long as he thinks it is in the national interest.
No one, no one, has ever put forth such an unconstitutional assessment of what our government is about. It is deeply threatening to the citizenry and offends our national pride.
Also, Mr Dershowitz has hurt the entire legal profession by offering such a patently dishonest defense of his client.
He has disgraced both Harvard and Massachusetts. I almost wonder if that was his intention — he can’t possibly have merely “goofed.” There is no way he believes what he said.
Do I have “standing” to report unethical practice to you? Isn’t this only between Counsel acting for the Defendant and the other side (The Senate)? My standing rests on my being vulnerable to injury by what he said. Already people have noted that such celebration of lawlessness confirms the executive in its “right” to be “plenary” (God help us).
From that point, tyranny is unleashed. I will suffer. That is my standing. Please act swiftly. Thank you.
Mary Maxwell

[…] (Recall my shock that Alan Dershowitz, on the Senate floor, acting as Trump’s lawyer said… oh never mind I do not even want to repeat it. It’s in a GumshoeNews article here.) […]
