A New World Order Becomes A Real Prospect

In a recent article, the well-known commentator Pepe Escobar (www.strategic-culture.org 31 March 2022) opined that the unipolar world was irrevocably becoming a thing of the past. In its place, a new multipolar world was taking shape. What was the foundation for Escobar’s confident prediction?

He began by quoting the former Russian president Dimitri Medvedev whose current role is as the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council in saying that the current sanctions the West has imposed on Russia, aimed at crippling that country, would instead “return to the West like a boomerang.” That prediction proved remarkably prescient. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin issued the shock announcement that selected “unfriendly countries” (i.e. the Western economies) could no longer purchase Russian goods unless they paid for them in roubles.

This announcement sent a shockwave through the Western world, quickly followed by angry denials that they would not do any such thing. The brutal reality, however, is that they have no choice. Russia is the major supplier to Europe of multiple series of goods, from food to energy. Europe has no possibility of replacing Russia as a source in the medium term (at least five years) for these goods. In short, the Russians have the Europeans over a barrel.

The Russian rouble responded positively to the announcement and is now trading at close to the same level (circa 85 to the dollar) as it was before the Russian intervention in Ukraine. That war is going remarkably well for the Russians, despite there being heavily outnumbered by the Ukrainian forces. The major Ukrainian grouping of about 60,000 troops is currently encircled in an ever-shrinking section of the Donbas.

They mostly consist of hardened members of the fascist right-wing, a group that the Australian government (and Opposition) appears to have little difficulty in supporting. This is despite their appalling record of atrocities against the Donbas people, killing at least 16,000 and forcing 1 million more into exile, mostly into Russia. They are overwhelmingly Russian speaking, a factor that motivated their banishment from Ukrainian society. The Russians will probably kill all 60,000 save a few retained for the war crimes trials planned to take place in Moscow.

It is not only oil that payment will be required in roubles. Other metals, of which Russia is the world’s largest principal supplier, timber and wheat (again the principal world supplier) will be added to the list for which payment will be required in roubles.

One action by the Americans will not be forgotten. They seized an estimated $300 billion in Russian reserves, emulating the same action they had previously taken over Cuban, Venezuelan, and Afghani reserves. There is absolutely no legal basis for this seizure. It is no more than theft, and the Australian government is one of many Western nations that have remained silent in the face of this outrageous theft.

The United States’ theft of Russian financial resources has not of course passed unnoticed by the rest of the world. One of the consequences of the theft is that a rapidly increasing number of countries are refusing to hold their financial reserves in United States dollars in case they meet the same fate. It has also had the effect of speeding up the replacement of the dollar as the major currency used in international transactions. This is a trend that has been led by China and Russia, and the range of Eurasian nations affiliated with them through the SCO, BRICS, and the EAEU.

For the past eight years, the Western media have ignored Ukraine’s blatant ignoring of the Minsk agreement, and also failed to report on the incessant war they have waged against the Donbas.  Russian intelligence informed them that a major Ukrainian offensive was being planned for February, and it was this imminent threat that dictated the timing of the Russian intervention. The fact that the Ukrainians had also been working on developing a nuclear bomb was a second factor.

Despite denials by the West as to the role of Americans in Ukraine and the existence of such a program was admitted by Victoria Nuland in testimony she gave to the United States Congress. It was further confirmed by the Russian capture of both the materials and the plans from the Ukrainian laboratories they captured in their Blitzkrieg. The American response turned from denying the existence of these laboratories to issuing dire warnings about the Russians intending to use nuclear and biological weapons in the war. A classic example of the pot calling the kettle black.

It is difficult to understand the intense American hatred for Putin. It was expressed most recently by United States president Joe Biden on his visit to Poland. His handlers in Washington tried to talk back the blunt lack of diplomacy in Biden’s remarks, but there is no doubting the deep personal animosity that Biden feels for his Russian counterpart.

There are multiple theories as to the origins of this animosity. One of these is surely the dubious role played by Biden’s son Hunter in the Ukrainian financial system, another fact carefully shielded from the eyes of the Australian public. The potential prosecution of Hunter is undoubtedly one of the factors used to keep Joe Biden in line.

The blunt fact remains that the era of United States dominance is rapidly drawing to a close. The era of the “rules-based international order” which in reality was a device to ensure continued United States dominance, is rapidly drawing to a close. A new system is emerging, led by Russia and China, the core of which was recently outlined by Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov in a speech he recently gave in China to several of his counterparts from across Asia.

“A new reality is being formed: the unipolar world is irreversibly a thing of the past, a multipolar one is taking shape. It’s an objective process. It is unstoppable. In this reality, more than one power will “rule” – it will be necessary to renegotiate between all the key states that today they have a decisive influence on the world economy and politics. At the same time, realising their special situation, these countries ensure compliance with the basic principles of the United Nations Charter, including the fundamental one of sovereign equality of states. No one on this earth should be seen as a minor player. Everyone is equal and sovereign.”

It is a message that will not be well-received in Canberra and other Western capitals. But it is a clear guide to the world as it should be, rather than as it has been. That the majority of the world’s nations agree with Lavrov should be a reason for the others to pause and reflect on the path they have thus far chosen. Whether they like it or not Lavrov’s view is the way of the future.

    There is now beginning – that is those countries who live in the real world – a quantum system of economics. A system that will eventually see ALL of Earth’s nations trading on a one for one basis without the impost of sanctions, unlawful and economically destructive exchange rates, or the need for ‘free trade’ agreements.

    Saudi Arabia and many of the 57 members of OPEC have just announced their acceptance of Russia and China’s gold backed token system – whatever that is to be named – trading on a one for one basis within those countries who have accepted that the Petro-dollar is dead, and that the Western Corporate governments, are still ignoring the reality of.

    Between Russia and OPEC, who control much of the worlds oil and gas reserves, The Fourth Reich (European Union) that has been withholding their gas payments to Russia, a country that supplies gas to all of Europe, will now be forced to buy their gas with Roubles which cannot be exchanged for Euros, but only for gold or other precious metals.

  4. As a former Yank, the collapse of the US dollar has mixed feelings for me. I actually have a pecuniary interest in the dollar’s health, I receive a small amount of disability payments for my time in Vietnam (gunshot wounds, broken back). On the other hand, I welcome the dollar’s collapse as it means so much will change on planet Earth. I wonder what will be the affect on Australia when the US becomes a shell of its’ former self.

    To be honest about this shift, I have often hoped for this time in history.

    We need to erase this view of ourselves as the jocular and laconic bronzed anzacs, always ready for a joke, and loved by all nations around us.

    My forte is interviews and surveys, and I have interviewed 5000 Europeans, many thousands of Aussies; read widely, and, more recently, simply adopted the soundboard approach to the communities around me.

    This is what we would see in the mirror, if only we could see.

Consider, we are not even self sufficient in fuel to sustain our military and transport industries, which IMHO is suicidal. Storing reserves in the deserts of Texas benefits Australia how ???? Yet very few Australians would even approach this subject and discuss it in depth or public. It has been said many times when the U.S. catches a cold, Australia starts sneezing, being joined at the hip with them, is going to cost us very dearly in the very near future.

Am not as well read as you but have for years been saying, “Australia should be a self supporting Nation, kowtowing to nobody.” We have been supplying our youth for 100 years to UK and US to fight Imperial wars. What benefit has Australia achieved, except a reputation of being good soldiers. We have almost all minerals and ore to be able to produce any manufactured article and have the climate and land to grow any food crop, yet we hang onto the coattails of inferior Nations. We also have some intellectuals and inventors to match anywhere in the World.

  10. In 2014, Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk declared their independence from Ukraina and joined the Russian Federation. The Ukrainan government refused to recognise their independence. For eight years they have persecuted Russian speaking Ukrainans.
    February 18, 2022 the presidents of these states ordered the evacuation of civilians to Russia. Putin then sent troops into Donbas, he is now blamed for atrocities on going for past eight years.
    The people of Ukraina are victims of the same global oligarchs enforcing the new world disorder. The ministry stressed that on March 31, the town’s Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk had confirmed in a video address that there were no Russian troops in Bucha. However, he did not say a word about civilians shot dead on the street with their hands tied behind their backs.”

    Even more surprising is that within minutes of the “breaking news”, western leaders — heads of state, foreign ministers, former politicians — popped up with statements duly kept ready and only based on the videos, seconds-long videos and a clutch of photos, ready to pour accusations. No expert opinion was sought, no forensic work was done, no opportunity given to the accused to be heard.

    French President Emmanuel Macron broke his election campaign where he’s in a dead heat with Marine Le Pen for reelection in next Sunday’s poll to brand the alleged Russian atrocities as “war crime”. Intelligent minds like Macron and Scholz’s must be realising by now their flawed policies leading inexorably to such a strategic defeat at the hands of Russia. But the big question is: Why such theatrics just at this point?

    The fake news surfaced even as the Phase 2 of Russia’s special operation is slated to begin within the week in the eastern Donbass region. Something like 60-80000 Ukrainian troops, rated to be the best units of the armed forces, have been encircled in Donbass.

    The Russian feint paid off in pinning down the Ukrainian forces in Kiev through past month. By the time the truth dawned on the Kiev set-up ( and their western “advisors), the damage was done. The enormity of the resultant situation needs some explanation.

    The above map reproduced from the Novosti (unfortunately, in Russian language) on the exact ground situation as of April 3 and the commentary by Ivan Andreev, an experienced war correspondent who covered the Russian operations in Syria, gives the salience of the cauldron in Donbass where the crème de la crème of the Ukrainian forces numbering several divisions are entrapped, isolated by opposing forces from their logistical base and other friendly forces.

    The cauldron is fairly large, marked in blue and black stripes on the map in the upper reaches of the Donbass region in the direction of Kharkiv. The massive Russian column that retreated from the Kiev region a week ago is manoeuvring in a big arc toward that cauldron bypassing Chernihiv in the north and the cities of Sumy and Kharkiv (near the Russian border in the northeast).

    The Ukrainian forces are well-armed and have fortified themselves heavily but are unable to escape from the entrapment. Nor is it feasible for Kiev to send reinforcements as the countryside to the west through consists of largely open farmlands (all the way to the Dniepr River). The Russians have air supremacy and it is impossible to hide any enemy movements from their roving eyes.

    The Russian forces have put out of action all nearby airports and destroyed the nearby Ukrainian oil reserves systematically through Phase 1 of the operation. As I wrote in a previous blog, three days ago, Russian forces dealt a devastating blow: “Notably, the Mirgorod military airfield in central Poltava Region, a strategically important hub, has been taken out of action and several Ukrainian combat helicopters and aircraft found in its camouflaged car parks, as well as fuel and aviation weapons depots have been destroyed.”

    Equally, Kharkiv has been surrounded and “in a high-precision strike with the Iskander operational-tactical missiles on the defence headquarters in the city on Thursday, “more than 100 nationalists and mercenaries from Western countries” were confirmed as killed.”

    Nonetheless, the Ukrainian forces are expected to put up a good fight rather than surrender — although surrounded, without air cover, and having no scope to rotate forces or enough fuel to engage in maneuver warfare and with ammunition running out.

    To be sure, a major battle is approaching, the most decisive in the entire Russian special operation so far. The catch is, the cauldron also has plentiful settlements of ethnic Russian population (including Russian passport holders) and the offensive will be a long grind patiently executed to avoid civilian casualty or destruction of civilian infrastructure.

    That is to say, Phase 2 may last anywhere up to a month or so to be completed. Make no mistake, the Russians have to win here (which they will) as they will also be breaking the back of the Ukrainian armed forces. Despite all the bluster by Zelensky, Kiev will realise the enormity of the defeat and his western mentors will see the writing on the wall too.

    To be sure, a whole month lies ahead where the western strategy will be to incessantly manufacture fake news, intensify the information war. Even some false flag operation may be staged under the supervision of western intelligence operatives.

    In a worst case scenario, Kiev may even play its last card — chemical weapons. Russia has publicised details of locations where Ukraine has kept stockpiles of chemical weapons. The US is known to have supplied as military aid special gear (gas masks, protective clothing, etc.) to cope with chemical weapons and given special training for collective protection.

    The alacrity with which Macron and Scholz consumed the fake news is a harbinger of a new phase in the information war. Succinctly put, there is a sober awakening in Paris and Berlin that the Russian operation is successfully meeting the set objectives.

    “April”, TS Eliot wrote in his masterpiece The Wasteland, “is the cruellest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain.” But the dark irony of this year’s “Aprilness” is going to be that the fecundity and renewal here will be about Russia’s regeneration in a world of both history and the myths spawned by quarantined western minds.
