One of the most important developments in recent years has been the Chinese inspired Belt and Road Initiative or BRI. First set out by China’s president Xi Jin Ping in 2013 it has since expanded to encompass 140 countries around the world. The geographical spread is impressive as the following table shows.
40 in sub-Saharan Africa
34 in Europe and central Asia (including 18 members of the European union – more than half its membership.
25 in East Asia and the Pacific.
17 in the Middle East and North Africa.
18 in Latin America and the Caribbean
6 in South East Asia.
Among the countries of geopolitical importance to Australia, two Pacific nations, Samoa and Tonga are members, as are Indonesia, Singapore, and New Zealand.
Conspicuously missing from the line-up is the United States and Australia. The Australian prime minister Scott Morrison has been quoted as saying that for Australia to join would not serve its national interest. Precisely what this interest is that would be threatened by membership of the BRI is difficult to ascertain. Why it would threaten Australia, but not New Zealand or the 18 members of the European Union has never been satisfactorily explained.
The real reason for Australia not joining is not difficult to ascertain. It is the hostility of the United States. Two years ago, on a visit to Australia the then secretary of state Mike Pompeo bluntly threatened Australia should it join the BRI. The United States, he threatened, would simply disconnect from Australia should Australia have the temerity to follow its own perception of its best interests and join the world’s most potent geopolitical trading block.
The source of United States antipathy to the BRI is not too difficult to ascertain. It’s a huge success, as measured by the 140 nations from all geographic regions that have joined is ample testimony to that. The United States, as is well known, is incapable of seeing any positive moves emanating from the People’s Republic of China, and the BRI is a consistent rebuke to the United States’ view of China.
One of the ironies of the United States position is that it is a huge trading partner of the PRC and remains so to the present day, notwithstanding the hostility of the Trump and Biden administrations. That hostility has not been softened under Biden, as the recent fiasco in Anchorage reinforced yet again.
Australia demonstrates yet again its subservience to the United States, acting in a way that is contrary to its own national interest. China is Australia’s largest trading partner and remains so despite a 40% drop in the recent trade figures, occasioned by China finally losing patience with the manifest double standards being applied by Canberra.
That trade has dropped in the past two years and it is not difficult to see why. Australia was at the forefront of allegations that China was the source of the coronavirus currently sweeping the world, and even the recent report by a WHO fact-finding mission has not deterred it from its persistent allegations that the virus is somehow China’s fault.
Quite apart from this trade with the PRC, that country has also (in 2019) the largest single source of foreign tourists, the largest source of foreign students, and the third largest source of foreign investment. That has all changed in recent months and it would be a very brave person who would argue that those figures are likely to return to their former prominence.
The hardest thing to understand is why would Australia go out of its way to seriously offend its most important economic partner by a very large margin. There appears to be only one explanation that provides a satisfactory reason. Australia is following the lead provided by the United States which has its own motives for contesting China.
In at least one sense, the warning by Pompeo quoted above was barely necessary. Since at least 1975 when the Americans were instrumental in the overthrow of the Whitlam government, Australia’s foreign policy has been indistinguishable from the wishes of the Americans.
At the present time, Australia is engaged in wars in at least three countries, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria in which it has no vital interest at stake, but is there as part of its loyalty to the Americans. Even a unanimous resolution by the Iraqi parliament in January 2020 but all foreign troops should leave their country was insufficient to persuade the Americans that there welcome had long expired. They are still there, and if the government has any plans to withdraw they are keeping those plans very quiet.
Similarly with Afghanistan where even the belated evidence of war crimes committed by Australian troops was insufficient to convince the government that they should leave. The important role played by Australian troops in protecting the lucrative heroin crop is still a topic that mainstream media refuses to discuss.
Biden is now reneging on the Trump pledge for United States troops to leave by May 2021. It is a safe bet that as long as they stay, Australian troops will also remain.
Australian foreign policy is marked by a singular unwillingness to take action that is actually in Australia’s interests. As the experience with China is demonstrating, there is an economic price to be paid for that blind loyalty to being an American ally. It is difficult to see any change in the foreseeable future. Australia will pay an inevitable price for that and they have only themselves to blame.

Then Hawke/Keating/Howard rolled out free trade, deregulation and privatisation. Protective tariffs were incrementally removed. These enabled China to undermine, with cheap labour and subsidies, 90% of Australian manufacturing and family farms.
China was the enemy that destroyed this nation’s economy. China is not a global social worker trying to promulgate prosperity. The more China trades, the poorer trading nation’s workers become. The third arm of China’s colonialism is the 1.2 million Chinese invaders who are buying up strategic parts of this nation’s land, unchecked by FIRB.
NZ, following EU abandonment and a free trade deal with China, is now an island of abject poverty, even more so than Australia.
Meanwhile, only a fool would deny the US is a global aggressor. This has nothing to do with Australia’s predicament, other than its behaviour is a handy anvil upon which China can beat us into submission.
The solution is not to cosy-up to expansionist China. The solution is for Australia to protect all our industries and food security. FACT: we do not need to trade with anybody. We have all the resources to be 100% independent. We only trade for the benefit of the rich. Balance of trade enables the rich to buy foreign luxuries.The truth is, trade is always inflationary. We trade at the highest price, which then forces our own population to pay more for the same goods. How is this smart?
If we become self-sustaining, we cannot be manipulated by sanctions… which is what China is doing right now.

Chinese-owned firms, in his view, must be prevented from dominating key emerging growth sectors, including 5G, robotics, and AI; these sectors must remain the preserve of Western (and preferably US) investors.
Barr’s analysis comports with the widely held view in Washington and on Wall Street that the PRC’s desired role in the global economy is one of facilitating US profit-making, not competing against it. China, in this view, must return to the role originally envisaged by US policy-makers of a vast consumer and low-wage labor market teeming with investment and profit-making opportunities for corporate America, not as a rival for economic supremacy.
Significantly, Barr’s speech was mostly free from the rhetoric that has marked the accustomed Sinophobic diatribes and slurs which nowadays are de rigueur in Washington. Mainly absent were references to alleged Chinese human rights violations in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong and accusations of Chinese expansionism in the South China Sea.
These allegations and accusations ring hollow, coming from a US state whose principal allies in West Asia—Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, and Israel—are hostile to the human rights and democratic values Washington professes falsely to champion, to say nothing of the United States’ own egregious human rights failings (witness, for example, the events that sparked the Black Lives Matter movement) and its robust imperialism (including continued direct colonialism; consider Puerto Rico, for example.)
Washington’s substantive grievance with China is that the Chinese Communist Party has pursued a state-directed development model which has vaulted China from the ranks of poor countries relegated to the role of serving US profit-making interests, to a level of technological and economic prowess which threatens to topple corporate America from its perch atop the global economy.
Barr’s speech is important in revealing the material basis of US anti-Chinese hostility. Washington routinely conceals its struggles for commercial advantage behind Olympian rhetoric about democracy, human rights, and selfless devotion to humanitarian causes. The practice resonates with an observation Hitler made in Mein Kamp. “[Man] does not sacrifice himself for material interests…[He] will die for an ideal, but not for a business.” Recognising that its citizens will not support a struggle for Wall Street’s narrow interests, Washington, as much as Hitler, has resorted to rhetoric about ideals rather than plainspoken references to profit-making, to mobilise public opinion behind, what is at its base, a struggle for commercial supremacy.

India-Iran-Russia North-South Trade Corridor An Alternative To Suez Canal

During the weekend when Iran signed a 25 years infrastructure and investment agreement with China, Iran’s ambassador declared that the new North-South Trade Corridor across the region could become a prime ‘alternative’ to the strategic Suez Canal waterway. Suez Canal was recently in news as one of the biggest cargo ships ‘Ever Given’ had got stuck and blocked the canal.
Called the “International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC)” — a two decades in the making ambitious project — the new trade corridor is 7,200km long. It links up Russia, Iran and India and will ultimately help in accelerating trade with Europe as well. The corridor is currently partially in operation.
Iranian Ambassador Kazem Jalali considers this corridor as a potentially less expensive alternative to the disaster-prone waterway transport route across Egypt:
“The North-South corridor is a great option to replace the Suez Canal with a reduction in travel times to 20 days and savings of up to 30 percent.”

Very nice to read something serious and well written without the cartoons and emotive stuff, but I would like to say, it’s worse than they describe, and I’ll just give one example, they measure GDP (an annual thing) and debt etc as a % but in financialised economies like Sydney and the US, GDP is puffed up by probably double due to useless government shiny-bums operating from printed money. That means the debt etc as % of GDP is realistically double of the productive GDP. (Current wasteage: lockdowns & sit-down money, quaxxines program, luxury renovations boom). Even a car crash contributes to GDP. As for China real estate bubble, I think the Wall St and London banks will be the only winners. How does China think it can win all these wars with so little experience. Granted their historical experience is valuable since it has usually involved losing. In 1973 without a referendum, the Attorney General of the day with the approval of Executive Council ( Whitlam) ratified what is known as the Unidroit Treaty, virtually ceding to some Intergovernment Foreign Power to make Rules to Govern a whole raft of legitimate Private concerns, as if they are State Concerns.
Under these Rules which are classified as Uniform Civil Procedure Rules, governing Private Law in respect of a whole Raft of civil matters thereby purporting non Legislative Repeal of Ch III Constitution and the Judicature. Clause 20 of the Unidroit Treaty committed Australia to it and it is automatically renewed every six years unless Notice of Withdrawal is submitted. Article 20 clearly States: Any Government wishing to accede to this Statute shall give Notice of its accession in writing to the Italian Government.
