Australian Foreign Policy in Serious Need of a Rethink

One of Australia’s worst-kept secrets finally saw the light of day. In an interview with Australian journalists, the French Prime Minister Emanuel Macron called prime minister Scott Morrison a liar. This is almost unprecedented in my experience. Politicians are rarely so blunt. They prefer euphemisms such as “mistaken” or “a different interpretation” of the same facts. Morrison of course denied it, claiming that it was a slur on Australians, whereas the French president had been very careful to confine his criticism to Morrison alone, professing respect and admiration for the Australian people.

As if to prove the president’s point, Morrison’s office immediately leaked the contents of a private conversation he had had with Macron, although the leaked passage did not in fact support Morrison in this view about the actual state of French knowledge over the cancelled submarine deal. What it did confirm was that Morrison would stop at nothing to try and prove his point, putting at risk the convention that private remarks are just that, private.

Australian journalists have been reluctant to follow up the president’s remarks, although all of them have surely been victims of Morrison’s habit of rewriting history to suit his own political objectives. Confirmation of Macron’s remarks came, perhaps surprisingly, from one of the Liberal party’s own, former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull who proffered his view that Morrison was a well-known liar.

Turnbull’s willingness to speak frankly from his personal experience of the man who succeeded him is prime minister was not followed by any of Morrison’s contemporary colleagues. They must surely be aware of the Prime Minister’s habit of rewriting history and his own version of it in order to make a political point. Perhaps anxious to retain their privileged position they mostly kept quiet. The lack of wholesale condemnation of both Macron and Turnbull’s frankness itself spoke volumes about his colleague’s views of Morrison’s veracity.

Writers on Australia’s alternative media outlets were less reticent than their mainstream colleagues. Most took delight in the fact that the prime minister’s looseness with the truth had finally been fully exposed. As Verona Burgess noted in The Mandarin

“Morrison’s own worst traits have been on full display since Rome: the slipperiness, the spin, the smirk, the failure to listen, the aggression, the blustering self-justification, the shifting of grounds and above all the faux conflation of himself with the Australian people.”

All of these traits were on full display in Morrison’s embarrassing foray to the Glasgow summit that he attended last week, and before that in Rome. Even the normally obsequious Murdoch press found it difficult to praise Morrison’s appearance at these forums. It had been widely rumoured that he was reluctant to go to Glasgow. He should have followed his instincts and stayed at home instead of parading himself before a nearly empty chamber and offering words that he did not believe in and had little intention of fulfilling.

The Liberal party do not really believe in climate change, at least insofar as it may be a reason for reducing, let alone eliminating, coal production and other policies whose effect will be to neuter any commitment to reducing the scale of global warming. A better measure of the government’s attitude to the conference theme was the prominent position in the Australian contingent given to Santos. Their prime placement in the Australian contingent was described as “a joke” by Malcolm Turnbull. He went on to say “look at the Australian stand – you’ve got a gas company highlighted apparently at the insistence of the energy minister, who thinks that our energy policy should be all about burning gas”.

Those of you who recall Angus Taylor’s recent appearance on the ABC’s Insiders program will understand immediately what Turnbull was talking about. It was an embarrassing display of ignorance and unwillingness to confront the realities of Australia’s energy policies.

If energy policy is a disaster, what can one say about Australia’s foreign policy? The aforementioned fiasco over the submarines was so bad that United States president Joe Biden went out of his way to apologise to the French and to bluntly blame Australia for not doing what he thought they had done, which was to be honest with the French.

Conspicuously absent during this fiasco was the nominal foreign affairs, Minister Marise Payne. How that woman manages to retain such an important portfolio is one of life’s enduring mysteries.

Overall, one is left with the impression that Australia’s foreign policy is in the hands of amateurs. Whether the Labor Party would be a significant improvement is at best an open question. Certainly, there needs to be some fundamental changes. Whether they will occur is an open question.

    Once again, O’Neill has exposed his absolute incapacity to understand geopolitics, despite grandly describing himself as a “geopolitical analyst”.

    Cold truth. Since 1973, Murdoch has dominated all decisons made in Australia. With the backing of David Rockefeller, and conjoined by Frank Lowy and Rass Garnaut, this troika has ruled Australia with an iron grip. The 1975 coup merely ensured that no dissenting voices could be heard.

    That James refers to Murdoch’s media monopoly as “obsequious” is hilarious. Who does he think is pulling the covid strings?

    Morrison had no say in the submarine or any other military decision. He was instructed by the US but fumbled these instructions and forgot to advise Macron.

    Anybody who does not understand our role as puppet of the US does not deserve the title mature adult, let alone ‘geopolitical analyst’.

    • The issue l have with your article above is you have portrayed Malcolm Turnbull as the Massiah speaking the biblical truth which automatically distorts the content and meaning of the article. The one observation that has been evident from Glasgow is the disunity and the sense of untrustworthiness amongst the majority of leaders there. It was a failed event signalling a One World Government could not operate in harmony with Countries signed up to it.
      Whilst opinionated egos are rampant amongst the UN, EU,WEF, IMF and the private sector NGO’s etc, then Nations leaders will lookout in the best interest for their country. It’s a natural human instinct unless your Judas.

      Guess what, James, the climate has always been changing, well before man came along the scene. The amount of heating I need to expend just to warm up two rooms in my house for any length of time puts paid to any ideas that I might’ve had about ‘man made’ global warming.
      Take a look at that thing called the ‘sun’. It has a diameter of 1.39 million kilometres. Our earth only has a diameter of 12,742 km. You can fit over 1 million earths inside the sun. and yet you think we little insignificant bugs are the primary driver of climate change?

      Dont be detered by the length: you only need to do a quick scan around the 2011-2014 to see massive amounts of solar activity. This correlates to warmer temperatures on earth.
      Skip to 2018 or so, and you will see virtually no activity, which results in cooler temperatures on earth.
      Frankly, I find it amazing that our sun is so stable. Suns that are smaller, especially red stars, are alot more unstable, and have much more massive outbursts (for their size) than our sun.
      I’ve known this for over 30 years. Is it any wonder why I find it hard to believe what our illustrious leaders say?

            For the last ten years I write in my candidate and include the little box. I insert as my candidate; ‘MY DOG’ and give it number 1 and cross out all the rats.

  19. I am not sure why James’ articles attract so much vitriol. He goes to a great deal of effort [thanks James] to articulate what many of us are thinking but can’t put into words. There may be one or two details that are, shall we say, ‘questionable’ in terms of our own understanding of the state of world affairs (our ‘world view’) but I just don’t get the feeling that he wants to enslave or exterminate my grandchildren, and he certainly opens my eyes on many fronts and makes me question and research the details even more deeply. Come on, who’s a fan of Payne – whatever that thing is Minister of currently – Minister of Mutilated Yemeni Children perhaps??

    • The US has been deliberately and systematically attacked by infiltration, partly because of its values notably free speech. In other places there are so many outright dictatorships, this type of stuff probably ended in Western Europe with the French Revolution. It could be argued the major advance in politics in the 2nd millennium was the guillotine.
      The intent of the US constitution is good but the outcome falls short of the ideal. Whereas the outcome in China is exactly what the CCP would wish, total control. The US did quite well for its citizens with relatively low war casualties and winning USD (yes federal reserve note) hegemony. Of course everything is changing now and we can’t really say what’s on the other side. But US citizens had a fairly good run excluding JFK, 9-11, GFC & Va666ine Depop, the major turning points, and other disasters of history before that. They still got a fairly good run, as did we. Maybe too good because we haven’t wised up as fast as some of the persecuted peoples around the place.
      So, don’t expect any benevolence or Christian charity from one nation to another, and where it appears it’s most likely a front. Their only obligation is to their own people and even then the obligation doesn’t amount to much. Australia like Taiwan is of strategic importance, otherwise we could just be dropped, as already happened after the fall of Singapore.
      Wishing for Australia to become a fully controlled surveillance state like China is basically a vote for Dicktator Dan down there in Spring St. Why do you want that, is it the song & dance girls.

    • Thanks, Julius. You are right James does provide alot of news that is correct. But he does seem to not research the Lima Declaration, which has been brought up a number of times in the comments. Bringing up the environment (which he didn’t really have to do) also didn’t help.
      His continual lambasting of Australia’s ‘riding on the coattails’ of the US, whilst legitimate, does not take into account racial differences. But at least you take time to consider that some of your views could be wrong, as we all should.

Because the story went that Mein Trumpf put the Fed under the Treasury, not sure the date of that but obviously during his official first term. Maybe this was just a rumour but a lot of things like this are just mentioned in the briefest terms as the sheeples are only meant to live on football and advertorials. Lehman Brothers (listed above) was supposed to have collapsed more than 10 years ago so we probably need more up-to-date information

    Bloomberg explains that China’s anti-corruption measures have made it much harder to recruit CIA assets, writing, “Xi’s broad anti-corruption campaign, which has punished more than 1.5 million officials, has also led to greater scrutiny of Chinese officials’ income, making payments to potential sources far more problematic, two former officials said.”………….
