Fiddling While Rome Burns: The ABC Ignores Vital Foreign Policy Issues

Watching the ABC’s program Insiders again this past Sunday morning it was once again obvious to me that the program has a curiously domestic orientation. Apart from a brief reference to the current United States presidential campaign, where the choice seems to be between “awful” and “more awful”, the program was entirely devoted to local politics, apart from a very brief reference to the New Zealand General Election held on Saturday.

Even Jacinda Adern’s crushing victory (the largest for 50 years) by a competent woman did not draw any substantive inferences, let alone raised the question of why Australia has had a succession of truly awful male contenders and occupiers of the Prime Ministerial rooms.

Each week the host has a panel of three commentators, mostly very able journalists, but again chosen from a narrow selection of employees of mainstream conventional newspapers; the Sydney Morning Herald, the Financial Times, and the Australian. The selection is occasionally broadened slightly to have one of the ABC’s own political journalists, amid other token sources.

The second dominant feature of the panel is therefore overwhelmingly someone from a conventional news outlet. It is as though the growth of alternative media outlets in the past two decades also has completely passed the producers by.  Crikey’s Bernard Keane for example, who writes with wisdom and insight has never to my knowledge being a guest on the panel. Other of Keane’s colleagues would also provide insights and a non-mainstream perspective, so sorely lacking from Insiders.

Other media outlets are also notable for their absence, such as the former senior public servant John Menadue who runs the highly regarded opinion website Pearls and Irritations. The very name of the program, Insiders, seems to be a reinforcement of the view that only the select chosen few have insight and opinions worthy of TV time in a prime Sunday morning slot.

The most curious absence from the program is the almost complete absence of any discussion about foreign affairs. The only exception in recent weeks has been some passing reference to the United States presidential election, the outcome of which will in all probability have zero impact upon Australian political life.

Australia’s subservience to the United States has been a dominant feature of Australian foreign policy at least since the coup that overthrew the Whitlam government in 1975. Australia is currently militarily involved in at least three foreign wars, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, yet all three receive zero media coverage in Insiders, and the situation is scarcely any different in other media programs including the news bulletins.

Those three wars go back to 2001 (Afghanistan) 2003 (Iraq) and 2015 (Syria). None of these are legitimate interventions under international law. Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan has had some recent coverage arising out of allegations of war crimes allegedly committed by Australian troops a decade ago! That Afghanistan is the world’s largest supplier of heroin, courtesy of the CIA, and well documented by the United Nations Drug Agency, which is never mentioned.

In 2003 Australia invaded Iraq on the basis of wholly false allegations of Iraq’s alleged “weapons of mass destruction”. Their non-existence was quickly proven which should have been the cue for profound apologies, compensation, and a quick withdrawal. Why then are Australian troops still there 17 years later? Why was a vote in the Iraqi parliament in January 2020 demanding that all foreign troops leave the country simply ignored by the invaders? Why did the mainstream media fail to report that vote or raise any questions about the continuing illegal occupation?

An even greater silence surrounds Australia’s involvement in Syria where various terrorist groups are aided, armed, and financed by the Americans, are trying to overthrow the Syrian government. What is also completely absent from Australian mainstream media reports about the activities of United States troops in Syria is the systematic theft by the Americans of Syrian oil.

This theft produces revenue for the United States government of at least US$40 million per year. The oilfields are where United States troops in Syria are concentrated. Such theft is a direct violation of international law, and Australia is complicit in the theft in assisting United States military endeavours in the country. Details of this theft are regularly mentioned in the United States mainstream press, but Australia’s mainstream press and major current affairs discussion programs such as Insiders are totally silent.  Next time you hear an Australian politician talking about the “rules-based international order” ask them how they justify illegal occupations of foreign countries and the theft of that country’s resources.

These are not minor issues. Waging an illegal war is the supreme violation of international law as the American prosecutors of the Nazi leaders at the Nuremberg trials explicitly stated.

Australian subservience to United States warmongering has until recently been a largely consequence-free exercise for Australia. This year however that began to change. Acting yet again as the loyal and unthinking mouthpiece of the United States, Australia openly challenged China for its alleged role as the source of the Covid-19 virus currently sweeping the world. That this allegation lacks any evidential foundation is only part of the problem. Part of the media’s subservience has been to again suppress the now huge body of evidence that the virus started in the United States. It was brought to China by the fake United States athletics team (worst ever medal tally) for the World Military Games held in Wuhan in October 2019.

The Chinese finally retaliated against this constant attack upon their country and in mid-2020 began to progressively freeze Australian agricultural and mineral imports. From July

2020 revenue from export sales to China plunged 20% and that is only the beginning.

China is Australia’s largest trading partner by a very big margin. The United States, for example, is a market about 1/8th of the value to Australia of the Chinese market. The reaction of Australian politicians to the Chinese progressive freezing of Australia’s exports has been akin to a rabbit caught in a car’s headlights: frozen inaction followed by vague muttered denials. That pressure will be progressively applied and Australia has only itself to blame.

One might have thought that the eclipse of Australia’s trade with China would be a topic worthy of serious examination in a prime television program such as Insiders. Instead, they are like the rabbit caught in the headlights, not knowing which way to turn?

The potential consequences of this loss of its major trading partner, by a significant margin, one would have thought, might attract some media attention. It is accompanied by an even greater collapse in Chinese tourists visiting Australia, Chinese students choosing to study in Australia, and Chinese commercial investment. Those who think the numbers will recover post-Covid are delusional.

These are in my opinion topics worthy of serious discussion. Insiders and other major ABC News programs are failing their obligation to bring this country’s parlous state, a direct consequence of slavish adherence to the United States aggression worldwide, to the public’s attention. A radical rethink of foreign policy priorities is long overdue. The ABC should be playing a key role in this process and the Insiders program would be a logical place to start.

ABC shows must be fully directed by the government presumably the minister, look how they show half an hour of state premiers talking about the bat-virus every hour or so, this is not newsworthy and it is 99% pure rubbish and probably very few people actually watch it but they keep running it anyway. They had the same in Thailand after the recent coup, “PM” Prayut Chanocha was on about 50 channels at the same time every day droning on for an hour or so at a time, everyone hated it.
    Also at ABC we have the rusted on Dr Norman Swan who I turn off every time he comes on he is so bad, now he has attracted the attention of Craig Kelly one of the few honest people in parliament

    They had a good medical show “Catalyst” which got scrapped and the star Dr Maryanne Demasi (not the one on aljazeera who isn’t a dr) got kicked off the ABC for asking too many questions about heart medications or some such, it all got shut down just in time for covid-19™ and “the great reset” (IMF). The whole scam is about big big money. As far as I can make out the great reset Jan 2021 is about getting nations into debt as much debt as possible and collecting the minimum interest off the good customers and more interest off bad customers, when they are up to their ears in debt the interest can be slowly raised. If you have any clues about global economics you can work it all out yourself. At some stage I expect the government here will cancel all the old plastic notes citing counterfeiting, a legitimate safety concern, people with vast sums of cash under the bed such as retirees (keeping under the asset test), drug dealers and so forth, will be left having to explain why they have more than the amount allowed. Private transactions/transits of >$10k have been banned for a few years, currently there is a crackdown on the banks for laundering, I expect the limit will probably be lowered to $5k. Australia has taken on half a trillion debt for bat-virus hoax and if we are very good our RBA may get negative rates for a while, ie, they are a safe place to use for storage for all the rubbish that was printed starting with Bush/Obama GFC a decade ago.

    On several visits with my elderly mother to her cardio specialist, waiting for hours at a time, I observed almost all patients waiting patiently, their eyes glued to the screen set to ABC and at a volume that fairly prohibited conversation, muffled enough already for the dutiful mask-wearers (I was most often the only unmasked person in the room). There were even people who shifted as any chair facing the screen was vacated, to get a better view!
    Whether this opportunity to capture an audience is common [in] practice?

    We in Australia experimented with female leaders and look at the results. Julia Gillard heads the terrible list. We have two current state premiers who are not much better than Dangerous Dan. World-wide female heads have been as bad or worse than their male counterparts.

      It’s not just the imposition of the Carbon Tax which raised energy prices precipitously for the battlers and increased the cost of living generally.

      The Australian dollar crept up to USD $ 1.10 under her tenure.
      Not because of her excellent stewardship of the economy – her government’s reckless spending would make a drunken sailor blush.

      The Australian dollar is a commodity currency. Simply put, as the market value of the stuff we dig out of the ground increases, so does the value of our exports and our terms of trade improve.
      As our terms of trade improve, the dollar rises in lockstep.

      After the 2008/09 GFC, to stave off a recession, the Chinese went on an infrastructure spending frenzy and needed Australian iron ore and coal in particular to build those redundant international airports, those fast trains and roads to nowhere, those immense ghost cities.

      Bottom Line : During the ENTIRETY of Gillard’s tenure, she had a once in a millenium DREAM RUN in our terms of trade – gifted courtesy of the Chinese (ie: record commodity exports which meant record tax receipts from the mining industry and the rest of the country as the flow on effects trickled to every corner of the economy).

      For this reason and ONLY this reason, Australia was the only OECD country that avoided recession post the GFC. (Contrary to Labor Party spin, it had NOTHING to do with the school halls building programmes, the roof insulation debacle or other reckless spending initiatives).

      YET somehow, under her tenure the government still managed to blow out huge and ever increasing budget deficits.

      This was economic mismanagement on steroids.

      If that wasn’t enough, let’s not forget this episode in Parliament which involved that smug little twit Josh Frydenberg :

  12. Aussiemal, women vary in quality, just like men. Not only was Jacinda re-elected with an increased majority, more than half of her MPs are women. There are also 10 openly gay people in the parliamentary Labour party.

    As for Australia’s relationship with China, only a fool would go out of their way to annoy their most important economic partner (and not just in trade). The last 300 years have been an historical aberration and what we are witnessing now is a reversion to the way things were for a very long time.

    Australia, because of its incredibly stupid attitudes and behaviour is going to pay a huge price.

    I subscribe to the old adage, attributed to Bismarck among others: a country has neither friends nor enemies, only interests. Australia has not learned that lesson from at least November 1975.

  15. If I was forced to align with any nation it would be Russia. And most certainly not with the US, China, UK, France, or Germany.

    As to trade, I would head for product quality, which rules out China. But my real preference would be to end all trade. Trade benefits the elite yet Australia is capable of producing all items with our own resources. Fact: we do not need to trade.

          • I told people in the mid 80’s when there was a huge panic about Ronald Reagan and Russia “there will be no WW3 because they can’t make any money out of it”. WW1 was primarily about the new German empire (“2nd reich”) expanding territory and trade routes east, encroaching on the older empires, primarily British.

The Morrison government is frankly a danger to this country’s wellbeing with its blind adherence to the US view.     Of course there is very little discussion of foreign policy because australians need to be kept in the dark like mushrooms.
    It also doesn’t help that whilst people might a disagreements with the govt on more local issues, they tend to trust the govt, or media when it comes to foreign policy etc. Sadly.
    Millions of people demonstrated against the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, but we weren’t listened to (we knew what would happen, Germany in WWII and all that rot)
