Gifts for Jahar Tsarnaev’s Birthday: Kevin Cullen and the Banana Peel

by Mary W Maxwell, LLB

The Boston Marathon non-bomber will turn 25 tomorrow (July 22, 2018).  Lately a few things have turned up that are in his favour, acting like little birthday gifts for the Death Row prisoner.

First, on May 13, 2018, the US Supreme Court ruled in McCoy v Louisiana, as was described  here at GumshoeNews.com. The relevance to Jahar Tsarnaev is that McCoy objected to his defense attorney telling the jury he was guilty.  With defense attorneys like that, who needs enemies?

Second, there was the matter, covered at Gumshoe, of the magazine “Inspire” and its article “How to make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom.” Hard to believe that any Bostonians fell for the claim by Prosecutors that such material was found in the computer of the Tsarnaevs. But apparently Bostonians are lacking in critical thought.

Now we turn to two more birthday gifts for Jahar. Both are acknowledgements by the media that they are not in full control of the Marathon story. The first one has to do with Kevin Cullen. I have seen his name listed as the editor of the Boston Globe, but now he is being referred to as a columnist. The “news” is that he has been reprimanded for not being 100% truthful.

The other gift has to do with the Associated Press (AKA the mIghty Wurlitzer?) entering the lists as a fact checker, or truth monger or whatever. “We will believe it when we see it, thank you.”

Kevin Cullen in Trouble? Hardly

According to Boston’s intellectual radio station, WBUR:

“The Boston Globe has placed columnist Kevin Cullen on “administrative leave” while it conducts a review of his work, after WEEI radio host Kirk Minihane scrutinized Cullen’s April 14 column about the five-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, and found several inconsistencies.”

So who made WEEI the outer of truth? I think this “news” about fake news is itself fake.  The purpose of WEEI’s very gentle criticism of Cullen has likely been created by the MSM to reassure people that the media is good at policing itself.  Quel joke.

The attack on Cullen by Kirk Minihane’s is not about any holes in the official story that was conveyed by, and even embellished by The Globe. It is a reprimand for Cullen’s doing such (standard) unethical things as writing in the first person as if he had seen an event when in fact he was not present.

Minihane, a mainstream radio broadcaster at WEEI, quotes this passage from Cullen:

“And so it was alternately poignant and horrifying to watch as first responders frantically pulled metal barriers and the flags of so many different countries down into Boylston Street in a desperate rush to get to the dead and the injured on the sidewalk.”

It is now acknowledged that Cullen was miles away from the Marathon.

Needless to say, the new work by Minihane presents readers with yet another vicarious visit to Boylston Street where they, too, can feel the desperation of pulling down the metal barriers, and so forth.

Could It Be Me?

I am flattered to think the Cullen suspension may be a way of lessening the impact of Chapter 16 of my book, Marathon Bombing: Indicting the Players, which has been online for a year.  In that book I put The Globe to the ordeal, as we say in medieval trials.

There is also some audio (“discovered” by Minihane) of Cullen talking about family of 8-year-old Martin Richard to the BBC on April 16, 2013. My book expresses some skepticism about the Richard family.

The naughty Kevin Cullen wrote:

“I just got off the phone not long ago with a young firefighter who I’m very concerned about. He’s a young kid. He’s a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, and he told me what he saw today was worse than anything he saw in the war zone. He carried a young girl whose brother was killed at the scene. I actually know the father, just ran the race today.”

[Fascinating, I wonder how these two men, the writer and the fireman, happen to know each other, and also how Cullen knew Mr Richard.]

“When he [Dad] finished the race, his young son left the sidewalk. He went out into Boylston Street to hug his Dad and the bomb exploded. The boy was killed. His mother was severely injured, and the daughter—the girl—my friend the firefighter Sean picked her up, and he carried her to an ambulance. And he said that when he [the fireman] put her down, he realized her leg was missing. And he went back to the scene and, he told me, crawled on his legs, his hands and his knees, trying to find her leg, and he couldn’t find it.”

Note that once again we are being walked through the gore, while we are supposedly reading about unethical journalism.

Minihane found that the connection between Kevin and Sean did not exist, and/or that it was not a fireman anyway who delivered the child [Jane Richard] to the ambulance.

The Globe, supposedly a bit chastised by these revelations, issued a statement:

“The integrity of each of our journalists is fundamental to our organization. In light of questions that have surfaced, [Cullen] has been placed on paid administrative leave while a thorough examination, involving a third party with expertise, is done of his work. We will be transparent with the results of the review.”

The F Word was All the Band Could Play

I could find only one comment appended to that WBUR article on the subject of WEEI’s new policing of the media. In my opinion, many commenters are paid trolls.  I tend to make the generalization “troll” when I see extensive biblical exegesis in a comment under a non-religious article, and when I see a flame in progress. Both are there as time-wasters and distractors, perhaps.

Also, use of the F-word gives me a clue, rightly or wrongly, that the commenter is not dinkum di.  Under WBUR’s article someone named Constantine said:

“The real question I have here is, why? Why risk your reputation like that? Now every piece of work he’s ever done [Cullen] has doubt cast upon it. To me, the consequences would not be worth any perceived reward from running a story that’s blatantly false. You wanna tell a story about the incident, write a fucking fiction novel. Fuckhead.”

Associated Press Goes Police-like over a Banana Peel

A clean-up of the media similar to WEEI’s is also taking place at the (surely CIA-owned) Associated Press. Here is a short piece they wrote, to correct the disinfo of the Internet  –hoping perhaps to discredit all alt-media, such as our dear GumshoeNews?

This corrective piece from AP was printed in the Minnesota Star Tribune, possibly as a trial balloon, and then a few days later at The Globe’s online section, known as Boston.com:

The item was headlined “Not Real News: Boston bomber not severely beaten”.

The report said:

“Convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has not been beaten by a white supremacist gang while in prison despite a recurring online report that says he was severely injured in an attack.

“The report posted Monday by Read Me Every Day relied word-for-word on a report that circulated online soon after Tsarnaev’s trial and sentencing in 2015. According to the reports, Tsarnaev slipped on a discarded banana peel, hit his head on the floor, and suffered ‘massive brain trauma,’ but it was later determined he had been beaten, the Aryan Brotherhood claiming responsibility.

“The Bureau of Prisons in an emailed statement said while it does not share inmate health information ‘we can tell you that there is no evidence of a situation’ as described in the report’.

“Tsarnaev’s appellate lawyer did not return calls for comment.

AP then says “This is part of The Associated Press’ ongoing effort to fact-check misinformation that is shared widely online, including work with Facebook to identify and reduce the circulation of false stories on the platform.”

Why on earth would AP care if falseness exists on Facebook?

Again, I wish to take credit! I have said many times in my articles and in the Marathon Bombing book that Jahar’s older brother Tamerlan died in custody. Lest that word get around, the AP is now reassuring people that there’s nonsense is going around about prison brutality, “but don’t worry, Folks, we’ve checked it out and it’s not true.”

For the record, no banana peel was involved in the killing of Tamerlan, as far as we know, and the banana peel story from ReadMeEveryDay could very well have been placed there back in 2015 by you-know-whom — with an eye to this WEEI/AP psychological operation in 2018.

You have to give them credit. They plan ahead. They try to cover all bases.

They are doing what they are in business to do.

Mary W Maxwell will soon be in the Greater Boston area. Will attempt to do an interview with Kevin Cullen. Or Kirk Minihane.  Or “Sean.” Or the banana peel. Or anybody.

  1. “my friend the firefighter Sean picked her up, and he carried her to an ambulance. And he said that when he [the fireman] put her down, he realized her leg was missing.”

I believe that line is a lot of crap. He didn’t know the girl’s leg was missing until he put down. Didn’t he look to see where blood, if any, was coming from. The first thing in such a trauma is to stop the blood flow. What about her clothing? If she wore a dress or skirt he himself would be covered in blood. If she wore jeans or trousers the leg of the trousers would be missing also.

“He’s a young kid. He’s a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan,”

What a contradiction!. This fellow supposedly served in Iraq and Afghanistan. War makes a person grow up very quickly. Too fast. If he served in both theatres, I imagine he would be 23 years at least, old physically, hardly a kid.

I think you are right, Mary to suggest that both these complaints against the MSM are propaganda pieces testing the gullibility of the public.

  2. David Berkebile is head of the Correctional Institution Administration, at Florence Colorado were Jahar is having his birthday.

David’s salary is $162,100 pa. You can phone him and ask him to give greetings to the non-bomber.

  3. Awesome article Mary!! This uncovers another little hint of falseness. “And he went back to the scene and, he told me, crawled on his legs, his hands and his knees, trying to find her leg, and he couldn’t find it.” With all the msm reports of limbs flying all over the place that day, its a bit odd that the fireman couldn’t find the child’s leg. What happened to it, where was it, or maybe it was never there.
Kevin Cullen spewed so much propaganda and lies over this case I wonder how he sleeps at night. He’s in the same sociopathic/psychopathic category as carmen ortiz. You forgot another birthday present for Dzhokhar, which is the wonderful amicus brief submitted to the court by you Mary, along with lawyer Jack and the doctor. Sadly I’m sure Dzhokhar is suffering today on his birthday just like every day. If only he could know about the dedicated people who are fighting for justice in this case and for the many who feel his pain and hope and pray for it to stop.

    • Although you belong at the top of the list, Cheryl, of people Jahar should know about, the fact is that two non-English speakers went out and learned English specifically for the purpose of helping Jahar get justice: Montse in Catalonia, and Josee in Quebec.

Peeps are amazing — and those are only the ones we know about!

May I correct your list of amici? They are Dr Cesar Baruja, Prof Jim Fetzer, and me — with Jack Graham as counsel (and really as creator of the very idea). Yay.

      • You are right Mary, so many people have done incredible things to try to help Dzhokhar also including his Aunt Maret. Sorry for the mistake on the amici. I knew you three but it came out wrong, however Jack should be mentioned and of course Fetzer and Baruja.. You 4 should be at the top. Glad you had a nice trip to Boston. Keep your distance if you ever do interview Cullen. Wouldn’t want his propaganda stench to get near you. You are so far above him as a human being.

  4. So I says to Boston municipal worker tonight: “Are you in the FBI”? He says “If I had half a brain I would be. This job [his labor] pays lousy but I have kids to support.”

I said “Do you know the FBI did the Marathon bombing?” He says “No, I never heard that in my life.” [pause] “Couldn’t be.” [long pause] “Makes sense though, they do everything else.”

      • That’s an interesting compilation, Fair.

Re Hawke i was tickled on the day after we won the America’s Cup race. The news host asked Hawke if he would declare a day off for the nation, and he said “No, not officially, but any boss who docks you is s bum.”

There is an insert at the top where you can enter any pollies name. I entered “Christopher Pyne” but nothing happened.

Pyne used to be my MP until we got redistricted. Talk about mind-controlled!

        • From democracy to kleptocracy. In just four decades this is what Oz has become. Although our men and now women have always been cannon fodder for the crown.
With agenda 21 mass immigration (in order to level the playing field worldwide) things can only get worse sooner rather than later. The more consumers the bigger the profits for the banksters and connected poo-bahs.

In the early eighties, skilled tradesmen were making $800/wk net in hand.
          Labourers $500 to $600/wk.
In all this time wages for the real workers have been stagnant and have actually gone down.
Then you could buy a house in suburbia for 150k. These days with compounding interest the price has gone up twentyfold.
A banana kleptocracy just like Brazil etc. The minority haves and majority have nots. No wonder the kids are leaving . Was never easy but it was attainable , today the dream is a myth.

Sorry for wandering from topic but this nation has become a communist brotherhood of freemasonic pigs.

  5. What a geat article. That banana peel thing is sooo old. Why’s it circulating again? Btw who are you?! Have we met before on twitter? You seem like a godsend! I can’t believe people are still looking for justice for Jahar after 5 years later. I thought people have given up on him. I supported Jahar since the beginning and then after the trial, I kinda stopped going on Twitter out of despair and heartbreak. Occasionally I’d look for news about his case but most of the time I avoid it for fear of seeing something bad and wanted to live in denial. Anyway I’ve always known that Kevin Cullen was a fucking lying scum and not surprised to see that he’s still a fucking lying scum. I’ve glad he got exposed as the liar that he is.
