Is the United States Really Withdrawing from Afghanistan

The recent announcement by United States president Joe Biden that the United States would be withdrawing from Afghanistan has provided an opportunity for the Australian government to announce that its troops too would be withdrawn. No doubt it provided a perfect excuse for the Australian government to make a good news announcement. The fact that the Australian parliament has not bothered for many years to debate the use of Australian troops in Afghanistan is a clearer indication of the true value the Australian Parliament puts on the assignment. It was never more than a pathetic attempt to curry favour with the Americans. Their absence from Afghanistan will not be noted, much less lamented by the Afghani people who have endured horrendous consequences from George Bush’s initial decision to invade, citing the alleged failure of the then Taliban government to surrender Osama bin Laden, the man falsely attributed with responsibility for the events of 11 September 2001 in New York City and Washington DC.

If one understands the real reasons for the American invasion of Afghanistan it puts into better perspective the announcement by Biden that the US would be withdrawing from the country. In fact, the United States is doing no such thing. It is true that Biden announced a drawing down of the formally designated United States troops in the country, but that is far from being a complete, much less accurate, description of the United States role.

There was no mention in Biden’s announcement of the nearly 8000 private soldiers that will remain in Afghanistan. Their role is also not discussed by the mainstream media who prefer to focus on the concept of withdrawal as though that was the beginning and the end of the argument.

Never mentioned in the mainstream media is the CIA’s role in controlling the production and distribution of the heroin crop, a crop that accounts for 90% of the world’s total heroin production. It is a huge source of off the book’s income for the CIA.

It is also frankly difficult to reconcile the concept of a withdrawal with the announcement, also made in the past week, of the deployment of B-52 bombers to Afghanistan. Those planes have one role, and that is to bomb people and in this context that clearly means the people of Afghanistan.

The other factor making an American withdrawal no more than a mainstream media fantasy is geography. Afghanistan is surrounded by seven other nations, including several “stans” of the former USSR, and of particular interest in this context, it shares a border with China.

The Biden administration has shown no inclination to lower the manifestly hostile attitude to China that was apparent in the Trump administration. The United States is not about to give up its listening post on the Chinese border, nor dreams of fermenting unrest between Afghanistan and its neighbours. Most of those neighbours were formally part of the USSR and the Americans have not lost hope in building a better relationship with those nations.

In Afghanistan itself, both Russia and China have increased their economic investment in the country. Afghanistan is the source of many valuable minerals, the development of which has been neglected during the 20-year United States and Allied occupation. Those mineral resources include copper, lithium, marble, gold and uranium among others. These resources are estimated to be valued as at least $2 trillion. The long years of warfare have eroded the capacity to exploit these resources. It is a deficit the Taliban, likely to assume effective control of the country in the foreseeable future, are anxious to exploit.

Their ability to be an effective government will be constrained by the continued United States presence. The potential for exploiting the mineral resources of Afghanistan has not been lost on the Americans either, and they will be anxious to take advantage of the promised “peace” to maximise the profit of American companies. In this they will be doing what has historically been a vital role of United States military interventions, making exploitable resources safe for United States exploitation.

It is an open question as to the degree to which this will be possible in the Afghanistan that is emerging from the effects of a long war. These effects include the displacement of 4 million internal refugees, and 2 million who have managed to leave the country.

A conspicuous feature of discussions surrounding the alleged United States withdrawal is putting those disrupted lives back together again. The whole fate of post-war Afghanistan is a topic conspicuously absent from mainstream media discussion.

What has drawn the attention of the local media has been charges of war crimes having been committed by members of the Australian military forces. The alleged crimes were committed nearly a decade ago. It is a fair question to ask: what took them so long?  It is not as if allegations of irregular and unlawful conduct were not known about years ago by persons who actually bothered to look at what those forces were doing, as opposed to repeating the tired mantra of “training” Afghanistan troops.

Given the spectacular incompetence of that latter group to make meaningful headway against the Taliban, it is an open question as to what those troops were actually doing, apart from helping to safeguard the poppy fields, a role that is also completely absent from mainstream media reporting.

The alleged United States withdrawal from Afghanistan is in fact no such thing. What will be interesting to watch is the extent to which the incoming telephone government can persuade the Americans to really withdraw. In this they will have an uphill battle. There are ample examples around the world that getting rid of an unwanted American occupation is almost impossible. Just ask the Cubans, South Koreans, Japanese, Syrians and Iraqis to name but a few.

It would be comforting to think that Australia has learnt something from its fatal foray into Afghanistan and that an Australian government would be slow to seize upon further opportunities to demonstrate their fealty to United States Imperial ambitions. The reported remarks of the head of Home Security about Taiwan make that an unlikely event.

Australia seems doomed to continue its allegiance in participating in United States wars of choice. It seems that the Afghanistan experience has taught them nothing.

    • The real question is, what did Trump mean by saying he would get the US out of Afghanistan May 1 (date from memory but also happens to be tomorrow). He was denied re-entry to Russia because of the tax evasion schemes he had been involved in. Prior to this he had been praising Putin to the skies. They were declared guilty on the basis of one man’s allegations alone.
        Since then, Browder has traveled the Western world promoting his Magnitsky Act to various governments, including the European Union, and most recently Australia.
        It can safely be said that no single individual in recent times has done more to sour relations between the West and Russia than William Browder. Unfortunately many of those Western governments needed very little prompting.
        It goes without saying that relations between Russia and the West, based on mutual respect and correct information, are crucial to avoid a war between the two sides, which if it happened would be horrifying beyond any previous conception of war. And to make matters worse, China would probably come in on the side of Russia if the latter were unilaterally attacked.

Occasionally John Howard would come out with something true and his statement that hubris would lead to downfall (a reworking of an older idiom) is probably correct most of the time, so I have to say despite PCR’s wealth of experience, contacts, knowledge etc I think his hawkish bias is wrong and Putin’s smart-guy bias is sensible.
    All this even without allowing for the likelihood of a Trump comeback, which I think Putin and our own very maligned Scotty both allow for.
    It does cause one to consider how the relentless anti-Scotty stuff is in the interest of the paid-up communist “progressive” movement (fronted by ALP & Greens) which as of now seems to be pushing for re-education for “vaccine hesitancy”, a monstrous and nasty invasion of ALP lies.
    In the world in general it’s hard to define any sort of white hats / black hats divide because there is such a morphing and re-morphing of individuals all pushing their perceived vested interest and constantly clamouring about “empowerment”. Whoever came up with “empowerment” certainly captured the Zeitgeist, if this brazen egoism continues forever we will probably soon evolve into cockroaches.

      • Mystery Babylons end is nigh.

        Part of my understanding of Jeremiahs 50&51 prophecy re the doom of modern day Babylon –

        Jeremiah 50:29 “Call up the archers [Arabs] against Babel all ye that prepare for conflict a bow, besiege it all around. Let none thereof escape, recompense her according to her work and according to all that she hath done, do unto her, for she hath been haughty against our Father even against the Sacred Man of Israel. Therefore her young men shall fall in the streets, and her men of war shall be silenced in that day says our Father Lord God of armies; for your day has come, the time I will punish you. And the haughty one shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up”.

        Who are the “archers”? Ishmael – Abrahams son ……….Genesis 21:20 “So God was with the child and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness and was an archer”. Strongs 693 [aw-rab ] means to lurk or lie in wait .694 [ar-awb] means “ambush”. 7198, Archer, means “bow-bender”.

        Jer. 50:9 “For, lo, I am stirring up a company of great nations from a northern land against Babylon, and they will array against her. From there shall she be captured”. Their arrows shall be as those of a mighty skillful man; they shall not return empty.

        Jer.50:14 ““Put yourselves in order against Babylon all around, All you who bend the bow;
        Shoot at her, spare no arrows, For she has sinned against the Lord.

        Jer. 50:15 “Shout [ split the ears ] against her all around. She has given her hand, her foundations have fallen [feet of iron mingled with clay].

        Jer. 50:17 “Israel is a scattered sheep, by lions driven away. First, the king of Assyria devoured him; and this last Nebuchadrezzah of Babylon has broken his bones”.[ see Daniel 6:24 ]

        Jer. 50:21 “Go up against the land of Merethaim [symbolic Babylon], against it, and against the people of Pekod [symbolic Babylon], waste and destroy after them, says God, and do according to all that I have commanded you”.

        Jer. 50:23 “How the hammer of the whole earth is cut in two and broken”. [This is Vulcans hammer, the god of confusion.]

        Jer.50:24 “I have laid a trap for you, and you are also captured, O Babylon, and you did not know…….”
        .
        Jer.50:27 “Put to the sword all her bulls” [leaders – mighty ones].
