Judith Beheads Holofernes, by Caravagio, 1599

Introduction by Mary W Maxwell

A lot of people are asking “What should we do to stave off a disaster that seems imminent?” I think we are not trying hard enough to focus on the options. In tomorrow’s article I will put forth some suggestions that are relevant to recent issues discussed at Gumshoe.

For now I simply quote the Old Testament’s Book of Judith. She certainly had no doubt that her choice of “what to do” was the right one.

(This is from the Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition. I have abridged it considerably but not altered the text at all.)

The Book of Judith

Chapter 1. Then was the kingdom of Nabuchodonosor exalted, and his heart was elevated: and he sent to all that dwelt in Cilicia and Damascus … and to the inhabitants of Galilee in the great plain… and beyond the river Jordan even to Jerusalem, and all the land of Jesse till you come to the borders of Ethiopia.

To all these Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians, sent messengers. But they all with one mind refused. Then king Nabuchodonosor being angry and swore by his throne that he would revenge himself of all those countries.

Chapter 2. His thoughts were to bring all the earth under his empire. Nabuchodonosor, the king, called Holofernes the general of his armies. And said: Go out against all the kingdoms of the west, and all the strong cities thou shalt bring under my yoke.

Holofernes called the captains and officers and he mustered men, a hundred and twenty thousand fighting men on foot, and twelve thousand archers, horsemen.  And when he had passed through the borders of the Assyrians, he took by assault the renowned city of Melothus. And he passed over the Euphrates and came into Mesopotamia: and he forced all the stately cities that were there.

All that resisted him he slew, and he set all the corn on fire, and he caused all the trees and vineyards to be cut down

Chapter 3.  And so great a fear lay upon all those provinces, that both princes and nobles, as well as the people, went out to meet him. And received him with garlands, and lights, and dances, and tumbrels, and flutes. But they could not, for all that, mitigate the fierceness of his heart. For Nabuchodonosor the king had commanded him to destroy all the gods of the earth, that he only might be called God.

Chapter 4. Then the children of Israel, who dwelt in the land of Juda, hearing these things, were exceedingly afraid of him, lest he should do the same to Jerusalem and to the temple of the Lord, that he had done to other cities and their temples.  And Eliachim the priest wrote to all … that they should take possession of the ascents of the mountains.

Chapter 5. And it was told to Holofernes [by Achior] that the children of Israel prepared themselves to resist, and had shut up the ways of the mountains. And he said … why have they not come out to meet us? Achior replied: When the king of Egypt oppressed them, and made slaves of them to labour in clay and brick, in the building of his cities, they cried to their Lord, and he struck the whole land of Egypt with divers plagues.

Chapter 6. And it came to pass when they had left off speaking, that Holofernes being in a violent passion, said to Achior: … When they shall receive the punishment they deserve from my sword, thou mayst fall under the same vengeance.

Then Holofernes commanded his servants to take Achior …they tied Achior to a tree hand and foot, and so left him bound with ropes, and returned to their master.

And the children of Israel coming down from Bethulia, came to him, and loosing him they asked him what was the matter, that the Assyrians had left him bound.

Chapter 7.  Moab came to Holofernes, saying: The children of Israel trust not in their spears, nor in their arrows, but the mountains are their defense. Wherefore that thou mayst overcome them, set guards at the springs that they may not draw water out of them.

And these words pleased Holofernes, and he placed all round about a hundred men at every spring.

Chapter 8. Now it came to pass that Judith a widow had[overheard]. And she was exceedingly beautiful. And she was greatly renowned among all, because she feared the Lord very much, neither was there any one that spoke an ill word of her.

She sent to the ancients Chabri and Charmi and said [We] must remember how our father Abraham was tempted, and being proved by many tribulations, was made the friend of God. So Isaac, so Jacob, so Moses. And Judith said You shall stand at the gate this night, and I will go out with my maidservant, and pray ye…

Chapter 9. Judith went into her oratory: laid ashes on her head: and falling down prostrate before the Lord, she cried to the Lord, saying:  Thou hast done the things of old, and hast devised one thing after another. For all thy ways are prepared.  Lift up thy arm as from the beginning, and crush their power with thy power.

Give me constancy in my mind, and fortitude that I may overthrow him.

Chapter 10. And she called her maid, and she washed her body, and anointed herself with the best ointment, and plaited her hair, and clothed herself, and adorned herself with all her ornaments.

And the Lord also gave her more beauty, so that she appeared to all men’s eyes incomparably lovely. And she gave to her maid a bottle of wine to carry, and a vessel of oil, and dry figs, and bread and cheese, and went out.

And it came to pass, when she went down the hill, about break of day, that the watchmen of the Assyrians met her and stopped her, saying: whither goest thou?

And she answered: I am a daughter of the Hebrews, and I am fled from them, because I knew they would be made a prey to you.

And when the men had heard her words, they beheld her face, and they wondered exceedingly at her beauty. And they said to her: Thou hast saved thy life by taking this resolution.  And they brought her to the tent of Holofernes, telling him of her.

And when she was come into his presence, Holofernes was sitting under a canopy, which was woven with emeralds and precious stones.  After she had looked on his face she bowed down to him.

Chapter 11. Then Holofernes said to her: Be of good comfort, and fear not. But now tell me, why it hath pleased thee to come to us?

And Judith said: For the industry of thy mind is spoken of among all nations. Moreover for drought of water they are already to be counted among the dead. And they have a design even to kill their cattle, and to drink the blood of them, which God forbade them to touch.

Therefore because they do these things, it is certain they will be given up to destruction. And knowing this, I am fled from them.

Chapter 12.  Then Holofernes ordered that she should go in and he appointed what should be given her from his own table.

And Judith answered him and said: Now I cannot eat of these things which thou commandest to be given me, lest sin come upon me: but I will eat of the things which I have brought.

And his servants brought her into the tent which he had commanded. And when she was going in, she asked that she might have liberty to go out at night and before day to prayer, and to beseech the Lord.

And it came to pass on the fourth day, that Holofernes made a supper for his servants, and said to Vagao his eunuch: go, and persuade that Hebrew woman, to consent of her own accord to dwell with me.

Then Vagao went in to Judith.  And she arose and going in she stood before his face. And the heart of Holofernes was smitten, for he was burning with the desire of her. And Holofernes drank exceeding much wine, so much as he had never drunk in his life.

Chapter 13. And when it was grown late, his servants made haste to their lodgings. And Judith was alone in the chamber. But Holofernes lay on his bed, fast asleep, being exceedingly drunk.

And Judith spoke to her maid to stand without before the chamber. And she went to the pillar that was at his bed’s head, and loosed his sword that hung tied upon it.

And when she had drawn it out, she took him by the hair of his head, and said: Strengthen me, O Lord God, at this hour. And she struck twice upon his neck, and cut off his head, and rolled away his headless body.

And after a while she went out, and delivered the head of Holofernes to her maid, and bade her put it into her sack. And they two went out according to their custom, as it were to prayer, and they came to the gate of the city.

And Judith from afar cried to the watchmen upon the walls: Open the gates for God is with us. And all ran to meet her.

Then she brought forth the head of Holofernes out of the sack, and shewed it them, saying: Behold the head of the general of the army of the Assyrians.

Give all of you glory to God, because he is good, because his mercy endureth for ever. And all the people said: So be it, so be it.

And Achior being called for came. Then Achior seeing the head of Holofernes, being seized with a great fear he fell on his face upon the earth, and his soul swooned away.

Chapter 14. And they sent out with a great noise and shouting. And the watchmen ran to the tent of Holofernes. For no man durst knock, or open and go into the chamber of the general. But his captains said to the chamberlains Go in, and awake him, for the mice coming out of their holes, have presumed to challenge us to fight.

Then Vagao going into his chamber, stood before the curtain, and made a clapping with his hands: for he thought that the general was sleeping with Judith. But when he perceived no motion, he came near to the curtain, and lifting it up, and seeing the body of Holofernes, lying upon the ground, without the head, he cried out with a loud voice, with weeping, and rent his garments.

Chapter 15. And when all the army heard that Holofernes was beheaded, courage and counsel fled from them, and being seized with trembling and fear they thought only to save themselves by flight.  No one spoke to his neighbor, but leaving all things behind, they made haste to escape from the Hebrews.

And because the Assyrians were not united together, they went without order in their flight; but the children of Israel pursuing in one body, defeated all that they could find.

Chapter 16. Then Judith sung this canticle to the Lord, saying: Begin ye to the Lord with timbrels, sing ye to the Lord with cymbals, tune unto him a new psalm, extol and all upon his name. The Lord putteth an end to wars. He hath set his camp in the midst of his people, to deliver us from the hand of all our enemies.

  1. Ah yes! But what if Holofernes was an Hydra… a worldwide plethora of secret societies with stooges and lackeys in every disguise?

  2. I’m also ever mindful of Bilbo’s little chat with Smaug; during which he just happens to observe a large bare patch on an underbelly that’s otherwise protected by an armor of encrusted gems:
“INSIDE INFORMATION”( Chapter 12 of “The Hobbit” JRR Tolkien)

    • Don’t forget the grand effigy’s feet of clay. Even a little girl pissing on those feet could bring the whole magnificent edifice crashing down. All our mothers and fathers, are, in their own way, complicit in our formation into the impregnable fortress of irrationable assumptions.

I am fairly confident that the “feet of clay” are long exposed they just need some brave boys and girls to piss on them.

  3. “Interceptor jets did not launch from Andrews Air Force Base, which was only ten minutes from the Pentagon, until 10.38am (and those jets were not armed). This was more than an hour after the Pentagon was hit.”

That’s from Richard Ryan’s book “Another Nineteen: Investigating Legitimate 9/11 Suspects.”

What I have in mind here is the presentation by Kristy Allen (see Gumshoe comments June 23, 2018) at the sparkling new International Tribunal for Natural Justice. She indicated that the boys at Andrews AFB may have had other things on their [PATHETIC] minds.

No man can serve two masters. Dear American, servicemen, y’all done wrong on 9/11. Yup, you are to blame. You think you work for America, but do you really work for men in a [SUPER-QUEER] secret society?

If the latter, it’s up to you to deal with it. You are heroic patriots, right? Go on, remedy the situation. Shouldn’t be all that difficult.

      • Dee, we reviewed KEVIN ROBERT RYAN’S book on Jan 29, 2015. Sorry I called him “Richard Ryan” above.

Buy the used copy now at Amazon for ten bucks. Miss a meal if u have to. This book contains more info than you can track down in a lifetime.

    • think pence said that he saw a f16 just before the pentagram was hit. maybe one was armed.
aircraft pilots have made a guild, their stained glass symbol is ” upside down pyramid complete with eye, aircrafts on top, the freemason dividers on top of it all.
the auto drones (global hawk mq4c) coming to Australia will not even require supervision.
it has large payload capacity and able to do fast descent. but it will not be armed according to our parliamentary liars . this thing plus the near Syria place is is automating gulfstream aircraft for no pilot operations. They fly so high they can not be seen or heard. another payload might be materials for solar radiation management or vax deployments. the 707 that crashed in Sale Victoria 1991, was not a VIP plane, but a test platform. The very experienced pilots had no reason to be performing the alleged moves. the plane was refitted by boeing military, it was unique to the other 5 . beazley covers it up in parliament blathering about proprietary knowledge. They were good men, don’t know how they change the ones that go against us. All boeings now except 747(almost gone), are remote controllable.

  4. Fair go, MM!
You want to blame all this perversity on them that are sworn and browbeaten to do as they’re told (or allowed) in military fashion? For as long as there have been egotists there have been mercenaries and their entourage of prostitutes, procurators and apologists.

It should all be put down to “survival of the fittest” according to the “Darwinist/Materialist” ideology. Eh?

  5. Shouldn’t your phrase “them that are sworn” be “those that swear”? And what exactly do they swear?

I bet the oath does not say “I swear to button up my lips if I find that my officers are sacrificing babies”

or “I swear to go along with whatever the ruse of the day is, in regard to why I am shooting people in various countries.”

Heroic patriots do not agree to do that. And there has not been conscription in the US since 1974 or so. So they join voluntarily.

    • Do your own homework, Magnificent Mary.
Most mercenaries are voluntary. And I have no hesitation in affirming that the majority of good men who are servicemen enter with the best of intentions. But for most pragmatism rules. Them that haven’t acquired transcendental values of self-sacrifice by prayer (acknowledgement of a Supreme Being) and penance (self chastisement) there is no regulation other than “if it feels good (and you can get away with it) do it”.

A few short years ago Wicca was the predominant (or at least the fastest growing “religious affilliation”) in all the “armed forces” in the Western World.

The most notorious populariser of Wicca was a great friend of Crowley of OTO fame. “Do what thou wilt is the whole of the law”.

I will claim that Gumshoe News is a big-time con-job to distract a few restless and unconvinced potential nusiances into a silly, endless, blather of irrelevant twaddle.

          • don’t get your undies(pants) on fire folks.
the wars are endless over all history. does not matter if in pious times or not. the swiss are professional mercenaries, protecting the money changers gold. Have been at it for a thousand years or longer.
the military now are outsourcing like never before.
as we have not been able to touch this thing so far, why is gums twaddle, i’m restless and unconvinced. Your “acquired transcendental values” are a requirement to join the freemasons by the way, but I appreciate your comments because it shows your working it your way, as I work mine, to the same place( parasite be gone).

          • All right, Simon, I’ll agree that “transcendental” is probably an unwise choice because even though its literal meaning is appropriate it carries lots of acquired baggage these days.

Your observation about the Swiss is interesting and appropriate. The celebrated “Swiss Guard” supposedly magnanimously “donated” to the Vatican is, I bet, not there to protect the Pope but more to remind him of the banker’s clout (thereby protecting the money changer’s gold). (Lots of dirty tricks going on behind the scenes there).

Anyhow, I still contend that Judith’s strategy will not work against the Hydra. More than a few have tried but without convinced and dedicated support of the “common man” the money lenders and their insanely ambitious lackeys have reaped enormous benefits.
