The title of this article and humorous photo may seem to indicate that the reader is in for a good satire.  I must therefore state that I don’t mean this material to be funny.

The title — The Day the Loo Paper Died — means that the day of an epidemic has come, rather than being a hypothetical for the future. It’s here; it’s upon us. “Leaders” are scurrying around to show what they can do, and “media” are trying to cover any angle that comes to mind.

I am personally in doubt about a lot that is happening (or not happening), but I have no good argument to present in that regard just now. This article accepts tentatively that there is a contagious disease out there, and I’ll proceed on the premise that it’s all innocent (no conspiracy).

So how to deal with this new situation? Who can or should act on the matter?  And who is, in fact, acting? Clearly individuals are acting for their own preservation. Hence the empty shelves in supermarkets.

Decisions Regarding Crowds

Some decision makers have made a big decision to cancel an event that would involve a stadium-load of humans. The National Basketball Association has deleted the whole upcoming season. Broadway has closed for an indefinite period. You will not be able to see a Broadway show no-how.

There was a Federalist Society conference in Michigan that I had considered attending, but the Law School there cancelled the venue. It got cleverly changed into an online affair. The twelve speakers all spoke by video from their homes! Conference registration fees were refunded, though airfares probably were not.

In Boston today, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker closed all schools whether public or private (and you won’t be hearing me go tangential to ponder whether he has authority over private schools, OK?). He also said you can’t hold meetings of 25 or more peeps, and food and drink may not be consumed in restaurants, but can be purchased for take-away.

Visitors to hospitals and nursing homes are prohibited. That’s in Massachusetts — excuse me for being parochial re Seppo-land. GumshoeNews editor Dee McLachlan tells me that all new arrivals into Oz must be quarantined for 14 days, and that persons who breach that rule will be fined $19,000.

The New Yorker has an article by Jennifer Gonnerman today (March 14, 2020) entitled “How Prisons and Jails Can Respond to the Coronavirus.” She mentions two risk factors pertinent to jails:

First, there are ‘pens’ where new arrivals get processed.  The room is small with up to 20 arrestees in it — some on chairs, some standing, and some sitting on the floor.

Second, the handwashing problem is hard to solve as individual jail cells do not have sinks, and the bathrooms have sinks but no soap. (Possibly a good thing – -my doctor husband used to tell me that soap is a fabulous vehicle for germs.)

Ms Gonnerman turns to others for thoughts on how to “balance the urgent need to slow the spread of coronavirus with the need to continue providing services, maintain public order, and lessen the hardships on families and vulnerable populations.”

She reports, in The New Yorker, a plan published by two NYC Council members — Brad Lander and Ritchie Torres. They sent a letter to the mayor. It is signed not with names but with a group identification “doctors and public health officials working in NYC’s hospitals, jails, clinics, and shelters.”

I will display it here (only slightly abridged) and invite a Gumshoe discussion of any of its aspects. The letter was dated March 12, 2020.

An Open Letter to Mayor de Blasio and City Officials

As doctors and public health officials working in the City’s hospitals, jails, clinics, and shelters, we are extremely anxious about the impact of the COVID-19 virus on vulnerable populations and by the City’s hesitance to take more dramatic action.

Given the information we have about the exponential growth of the virus and the limited capacity of our health system to care for the number of people who will become sick and need care at the same time, we believe that aggressive measures must be taken now. ….

We call on the City to:

Act immediately and boldly to slow the spread of the virus:

  • Suspend classes at public schools, while keeping schools open for emergency childcare for essential workers and vulnerable families. Keep childcare groups small, under 10 kids per group. Close schools immediately and reopen some as centers of family support and mitigation.
  • Order the NYPD to stop making low level arrests for violations and misdemeanors, in order to prevent the spread of the virus through our jails, courts, and precincts.
  • Order the courts to consider release for anyone in pretrial detention over 60. Administratively reschedule all criminal court proceedings for people who are not currently incarcerated. Reschedule all other court proceedings.
  • Urge businesses to have all non-essential workers work from home. Employers may have discretion over who is “essential,” but give guidance that only those providing services that must be maintained during a state of emergency should be considered essential.
  • Strongly advise people over 60 to avoid public transit.
  • Cancel all City events and revoke permits for events.
  • Ensure that medical personnel have adequate personal protective equipment.
  • Open a virus hotline for residents to be able to call a nurse and get a home visit if needed for quarantined people with moderate symptoms rather than bring people into the ER.
  • Order the Administration of Children’s Services (ACS) to stop requiring parents to attend groups and programs; halt non-emergency family court proceedings, guarantee tele-visitation for parents and children.

Take steps to strengthen the social safety net to protect vulnerable New Yorkers.

  • Turn schools into centers for community aid: food pantry, crisis navigation, and eventually satellite testing sites once we have capacity to test widely.
  • Urge the State to adopt paid sick leave for up to 2 weeks for all workers immediately.
  • Work with the State to institute an immediate moratorium on evictions and provide benefits for families and businesses.
  • Divert workers from other non-essential services to Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities and public housing to check on quarantined elderly. Can do by phone/remote to minimize unnecessary contact.
  • Increase Meals-on-Wheels service.
  • Increase staffing for the City’s mental health hotline to deal with increased anxiety and suicidality exacerbated by isolation and uncertainty.
  • Take steps to address the digital divide, including providing burner cell phones at crisis centers and shelters for people who do not have cell phones.

We are grateful for the City’s caution and attention to the impact of the coronavirus and associated response on vulnerable populations. We urge the City to begin taking more aggressive steps to shut down business as usual to slow community spread, while also increasing support for vulnerable populations.

I note that, in an article dated October 23, 2019 the co-author, Brad Lander, wrote about prisons as follows:

Oh and by the way, at the Federalist Society meeting that I didn’t go to in Michigan, the substitute arrangement meant that we in the online viewing audience could do live-chat. As one of the speakers was Prof John Yoo, I was delighted to send him a question:

Will Strong:  Do you think it is likely the court will reconsider deference in the future, given they were reluctant to in Kisor v Wilkie?

Teri G: Not going to get gov to do what’s right when it’s full of criminals who are owned by corps. [!!]

PG Augustine (Yale 1L): The Fed. Papers seem to be filled with rational deliberation. Where should we try to locate — and perhaps carve out a place for that deliberation — in an era of Executive Orders?

    Christopher Jon Bjerknes takes us back even further to 1914 and introduces us to Jack London.

    Jack (John Griffith) London [1876 – 1916] was born John Griffith Chaney. Described as an American novelist, journalist and social activist, he was an innovator in the genre that would become known as science fiction.

    London’s bio talks about his views on Atheism, Socialism, Race and Eugenics. He is quoted as writing “I believe the future belongs to eugenics, and will be determined by the practice of eugenics.” He supported the forced sterilization of “criminals” or those deemed “feeble-minded”.

    In “The Strength of the Strong” (1914), London was particularly keen to narrate how he desired the extermination of the entire Chinese race.

    London provides a very graphic image of how he envisaged the billion Chinese people to be eugenically eradicated. (Their very existence violates certain ‘laws’, you see [listen to Bjerknes and see his links].)

    But even one body, never mind a few hundred thousand, would create an unbearable stench. If I remember correctly, HG Wells wrote a book soon after flight was discovered, and therefore soon after cities would be bomb-able (1910?). Already he noted that a genocide like that could not be performed as the city would become uninhabitable.

    Possibly the ever-escalating arms race in bioweapons has led to a solution: white phosphate.

  5. Has the World gone completely mad? Fallen head-long into the panic caused by the crisis planned by the Globalists to hide their financial collapse.

    The figures of occurrence and deaths caused by this so-called pandemic are nowhere that of the annual flu epidemic, yet everyone seems to have missed that fact because of the scare tactics being used by the news media.

    Can anyone explain to me the connection between a mild flu, which this disease is, and toilet paper? Why has the World purchased all toilet paper in stock, because of something that has nothing to do with diarrhoea?

    If it is to obtain a supply because of likely stock shortages on selves, why was toilet paper the first item to start the panic buying? Financial experts have been warning the community to buy household products to see them through several weeks during the coming financial collapse, for several years and they have been virtually ignored. Why is this crisis so different?

    I guess it is because this crisis has been planned and the msm are up to their armpits deliberately creating a panic situation on behalf of the Central Banks.

        • Julius – What Australian Reserves? Costello sold our 20 billion worth of gold to the World Bank back in 2006 so the Libs could skite about having a budget surplus as the Reserve Bank sank its clutches even deeper into our national wealth.

          Folks will soon wake up to the realization that what was done to other countries over hundreds of years in stripping of their wealth, has been going on full steam ahead in this country ever since the end of the second world war.

          I don’t profess to completely understand all of the workings of this current Central Banking system that we are still under, but I would venture to add, that one only need to realize it is a criminal enterprise enslaving us all, to appreciate that we need to get out of it altogether.

          Thank God for Trump who is actually doing something about getting the whole world out of the current criminal system.

          My guess concerning stolen gold reserves is that they will be returned after a massive debt jubilee that will destroy the current system – you should realize that this is my opinion only, but I have based it on what I have come to learn.

    Like I said 2 posts ago, Aus has been importing at least 50% of it’s TP from China ditto first aid items and other essentials. No guesses as to why the issue has been given virtually zero attention

  11. Here’s a thought – a hand towel is a better option for a ladies toileting activities. Save the TP for the rougher stuff. It would have been smarter to save the money NOT spent on TP for essential items like food, water, and medical supplies. Orwell, Huxley, Koontz, London/Chaney all saw this coming.   13. A government funded Pirbright Institute in the UK applied for a patent to the Coronavirus in 2015, was granted in 2018. This institute is also funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation along with WHO. At this present time while the Coronavirus is being applied to do it’s dirty work, Bill Gates suddenly decided to step down as a director of The Gates Foundation.

    Apparently he does not want to share the fame or shame of this treasonous activity. Would this be to sidestep possible criminal charges in the future?

    Ron Paul writes in the article that one mayor in Illinois signed an executive order declaring the power to …. cut off gas , water or electricity to any citizen .

    Yes , that citizen that has his utilities cut off ( & perhaps has his bank accounts / credit cards frozen ) , will be touted in the MSM as having broken COVID-19 quarantine curfews or spreading the virus or some such.

    In reality though , said individual may be guilty of nothing more than disseminating the facts about 9/11 , The Port Arthur Massacre or been campaigning on behalf of BDS ( & hence running afoul of the agenda of the Anglo-Zionist empire ).

    Really sinister stuff .
