The Folly of the Afghanistan Involvement Points to Wider Problems

There has been considerable discussion in the United States media of late about outgoing President Donald Trump’s plan to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan. That may or may not happen under his successor Joe Biden who has made no similar commitment to withdraw US troops from that country. Personally, none of the reasons attract the attention of the mainstream media, but they are significant. I would be very surprised if the US withdrew its troops from Afghanistan, and there are a number of reasons for holding that view.

The United States involvement in Afghanistan is in fact far longer than the 19+ years commonly referred to in the mainstream media. The US became seriously involved in Afghanistan following the movement of Soviet Union troops into the country in 1980. This is commonly referred to as a Soviet “invasion”, but in fact, the Soviet troops entered Afghanistan following repeated requests from the Afghan government, which then as now controlled only a portion of the country.

The Soviet intervention gave an impetus to the power of the Taliban, which then as now provided the main body of resistance to the government. In that endeavour they were assisted by the United States government who clearly saw opposing Soviet forces as a wider part of their ambition for huge money in the region.

The Soviets withdrew in 1989, unable to exert any pressure on the Afghan government for reform. It has been a fruitless exercise from the Soviet point of view and it was no real surprise that the Soviet Union itself collapsed a year later.

What then followed in Afghanistan might reasonably be described as a shambles, with no one party exercising effective control over the whole country. The Taliban government itself collapsed following the United States invasion in November 2001. The reasons for that invasion were nominally because the Taliban refused to hand over Osama bin Laden who was then living in the country.

They had asked for evidence of bin Laden’s alleged role in the attacks in New York and Washington DC on 11 September 2001. That was never forthcoming and part of the misinformation campaign regarding that invasion was that it was a United States response to bin Laden’s alleged role in the attacks of 11 September 2001.

We now know that the United States invasion of Afghanistan had been discussed in the Bush cabinet at the beginning of the year. Bin Laden himself was gravely ill by the end of 2001 and died of natural causes at the end of that year. The whole charade of his alleged capture, killing and burying at sea was presented to a gullible public as an actual account of his demise.

Even had that story been true, it was a blatant execution without trial of a former long-time United States asset. More importantly for present purposes, if the story of the capture and execution had been true, how could it be that years later the United States is still there?

The answer to that question, indeed the real reason for the original invasion, is geography. Afghanistan has borders with seven other countries in the region, including most notably, China, Pakistan and Iran. The US invasion gave the Americans an unprecedented opportunity to have extensive military forces on those countries borders, as well as other countries that had formed part of the old Soviet Union.

Afghanistan had a further lure as it was, prior to the Taliban taking over, one of the world’s major sources of heroin. That industry has been decimated under Taliban rule and it was a subject given high priority by the invading forces. Heroin production boomed in the years following the invasion and now accounts for more than 85% of the world’s supply. The fate of the heroin trade has been noticeably absent from United States discussions of what will happen post their planned departure in May 2021. It is one of the CIA’s major “off the books” sources of income, which may account for the almost complete absence of discussion as to its fate post the alleged US withdrawal.

An actual withdrawal of US troops would be a surprise, but those troops themselves are only a small portion of the foreign forces in that country. There are for example, more than 5500 United States mercenary forces in the country and rather than shrinking, the numbers have actually increased in the past 12 months. It is no surprise that the Australian media are totally silent on both the existence of those forces, and what their future role may be. Guarding the poppy crop would feature high on any list of their tasks.

The same is true of other “allied” forces in Afghanistan. The Australian government has been conspicuously silent as to the fate of its forces in Afghanistan. Their alleged role of “training” Afghanistan troops fools no one.

Since 1945 the United States has never voluntarily left any of the countries that it has occupied. There is no real reason to believe that Afghanistan will prove to be an exception. The Taliban clearly have a different view and it will be interesting to see what degree they are able to enforce their policy of the removal of all foreign troops from Afghanistan.

It is impossible to see any role for Australian troops. The current government will do as the Americans want. The Labor Opposition totally lacks the courage or the independence of the Whitlam government that unilaterally withdrew Australian troops from Vietnam.

Perhaps the fate of the government, which fell less than three years later to a United States inspired coup, still cast a shadow that renders any future Labor government as a catspaw to American wishes. Certainly, the present Australian leadership seems fully committed to a suicidal policy economically in its attitude towards China. That also is unlikely to change substantially under the Biden administration.

What is truly lacking in Australia is an independent foreign policy, one that acts in accordance with the countries actual needs rather than, as has been the case since the 1950 invasion of Korea, an appendage to United States foreign policy interests. The Whitlam era was an honourable exception. Few countries more comprehensively exhibit the folly of this policy than Afghanistan. The time is long overdue for a radical reappraisal of Australia’s vital interests.

  2. It will be interesting with this economic collapse and the demise of the U.S. Dollar. When the U.S. can’t pay for all the military adventures nor be able to bribe foreign politicians, I expect that will be some changes in American military posturing.

    I haven’t seen any analysis along these lines, perhaps others may know of some authoritative source of information. Time is getting short for the American Dollar, so the moment of truth will be arriving fairly soon.

          The usual deal with the Reserve Banks is that the Treasury comes up with bonds and the Fed buys these bonds, which then probably get rolled over every time as the currency slowly devalues, this is why the story of Trump loading up the US Fed with junk bonds is so interesting (not saying it’s exactly true).
          Rotschilds scrapes off a bit here of various banking enterprises but they also function as reputable banks and have all sorts of shareholders, Rotschilds are much smarter than James Packer who thought he could stick up like a sore thumb on Barangaroo quay and nobody would notice, they know you can’t survive without public shares. Rotschilds also bought Rio Tinto about 1880 and no doubt still own 51% and this hints at other mining companies and land assets.         Belief is the adoption of an attitude or position DESPITE THE EVIDENCE. This comes perilously close to a definition of insanity.

        As to TV, I recall no occasion upon which he has breached this axiom. If he inserts a belief or opinion he makes this clear. In other respects he is one of the most interesting sources of information to appear on these pages. Significantly, and independently, I have drawn identical conclusions which, by the way, is also evidence.

        What you most certainly have achieved in your posts is that your brand of logic exactly parallels that of AIPAC and other Zionist lobbies, my conclusion unavoidably being that you are part of this lobby, which is ample reason to scroll passed your rants.

This was always intended to be something that they could use in the case of needing a war with China. The Epoch Times, a Falun Gong newspaper, is the only source for these claims.         When Trump became the Prez, he also presided over a Congress that had Republican majorities in both houses so he could’ve introduced legislation to abolish the Federal Reserve.

        He didn’t – he was never going to.

        Let’s just assume for a moment that Trump was indeed a patriot and intended to abolish the Federal Reserve.

        How would it pass either house of Congress when the majority of Senators and Congresspersons (of both the Dems and GOP) are OWNED by the Zio-lobby ???

        Ron Paul tabled legislation to just get an AUDIT of the Fed and it was voted down by a WIDE majority.

        Let me repeat : Dr Paul only requested an AUDIT of the Fed (not abolition of it), and he couldn’t even get that.

        So Ned, do you honestly think that Trump, in his remaining hours in office (because he will surely be gone very soon), is going to get legislation passed by a Democratic majority in the Lower House when he could NOT have done it a few years ago when the Republicans held both houses of Congress ?

        You see, Zio-Dave says these things about abolition of the Fed, all the while KNOWING that the cultists will never perform any due diligence and QUESTION by what mechanism the Federal Reserve would be brought down.

        Zio-Dave says anything and everything knowing his listeners just believe it will happen by ‘osmosis’, somehow by telekinesis or some such.

        Of course everything I’ve brought up is a moot point.
        Because even if the legislation was passed by both houses of Congress, Trump would just veto the legislation anyway – because he NEVER intended taking away the money tree from his Zio-controllers.

        Honestly Ned, show me one video, just ONE where Trump even mentions an AUDIT of the Fed (let alone abolition of it).

Ned, it breaks my heart to see how the Zio-cabal have applied (in plain sight) the age old maxim of ‘Divide and Conquer’ by separating some into the Trump-Controlled-Opposition (left-of-centre) camp and others into the Democratic (similarly-left-of-centre) camp and have the foot soldiers within each camp wage war on one another.

    The cabal is chuckling all the way to the bank (the Federal Reserve Bank) as they watch this ridiculous spectacle unfold seeing as the leadership of both camps is controlled by them.

    Left and right should unite as one and confront this common enemy of humankind.
