The Miserific Calculus

When I was in university, one of my teachers, Paul Corcoran, was discussing John Stuart Mill  (1806-1873), the utilitarian philosopher who talked about “the felicific calculus.” The word comes from the Latin felix, happy, and facere, to make.  Mill was interested in finding “the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people.”

Paul Corcoran made a side remark about a miserific calculus.  Years later, when I asked permission to quote him, he said he did not recall having invented that phrase.  I’ll now use it to conjure up the idea that bad persons could try to attain the greatest misery for the greatest number. (Thanks, Paul.)

This is no idle exercise in fantasy! I think some bad people do in fact attempt to demoralize society in all possible ways.

Let us picture misery on an individual scale. Think of the way a man could experience great unhappiness: His daughter has just been in an auto accident.  He lost money at the horse races. His boss gave him a poor rating even though his job performance was excellent. His neighbor stole his wife!

But that’s not exactly the kind of misery I am trying to calculate. Any person might, at any point in his life, have an onslaught of bad luck. I am trying to put myself into the shoes of “baddies” who aim to make the whole society feel an emotion of misery. What is their modus operandi?

I imagine them aiming at four targets: 1. the average person’s self-confidence, 2. his/her access to resources (food, shelter, whatever), 3. the availability of helpers if there is a disaster, and 4. the presence of ideals in his environment.

There Go the Unions

The thing that triggered me to look at this matter was an article in The Defender, the online magazine of Robert F Kennedy, Jr’s group, Children’s Health Defense. It was about airline pilots’ misery over their vaccination injuries. The stunning thing in the article is not that the pilots failed to get help from the airline industry or the medical industry — they failed to get help from their unions.

Wow. Indeed it’s worse than that — they say the unions are acting in an intimidating manner towards the members. The Defender article, written by Michael Nevradakis, PhD, tells us that strokes, heart attacks, and myocarditis are among the injuries stemming from the mandated Covid jabs. These men are normally extra-healthy — every six months they have to renew their medical certification to fly.

At the very least, the pilots want a halt to the injections for new employees who did not already make the mistake of getting vaccinated. The complaint is that the unions are even going so far as to intimidate injured pilots who speak out.

Isn’t it the very basic role of unions to support members? And as for us passengers, there is the fear that we could be in a plane crash if the pilot passes out. Plus the misery of knowing — thanks to RFK Jr, and others — that freedom of speech is being curtailed by the US government.

Doing the Calculus

Let’s assign points to such a thing, so that we can picture the extent of social misery today. For example, I hereby assign 6 points — out of a theoretical 100 total — to the loss of support by one’s union. For the individual employee, that loss may be worth 80 points; it may in fact crush him. But I am not calculating the miserific calculus of the individual. When I say that loss of union support is worth 6 miserific points, I mean it for the society.

Those of us who are not pilots and don’t belong to any union, nevertheless sense that the loss of such a traditional protector is ominous. It is also a worry to think why a pilot’s union would silence injured pilots instead of fighting for their rights. What could be the union leaders’ motives?  To whom do they answer? If they answer to “X,” then “X” is someone who is also likely to hurt us all.

Above, I said the bad guys aim at four targets: our self-confidence, our access to resources, the availability of helpers, and the presence of ideals in our environment. The pilots’ example, given by Nevradakis in The Defender, is a direct hit on two of those four targets: self-confidence and availability of helpers. It also destabilizes a major ideal in our environment: truth-telling.

Lying As the Norm

I hereby deem that the culture of lying, that has taken over America, is worth 43 points toward the miserific calculus. Granted, that may be a bit too high, reflecting a bias based on my own experience.  Along with many dissidents, I have been personally frustrated for years by the lack of reception we get, for our “conspiracy theory” stories.

The official narratives that we oppose are full of lies. Once the media has “bombed” it into the public that such-and-such an event was done by terrorists, it’s hard to broach an alternative interpretation of the event. (See my book “Boston’s Marathon Bombing.”) I concede that the general public is not suffering to the tune of 47 points, if they are unaware that the lying is occurring.

Nonetheless, it seems that everyone is dropping the virtue of honesty as a sort of old-fashioned custom. (As kids, we were taught the poem “Under the spreading chestnut tree the village smithy stands… ” The reason this blacksmith was a great, strong guy is that he was dead honest.) The loss of this as an ideal in our culture is quite significant.

Evolutionary biologists have recognized the phenomenon of Free-rider holdback.  You naturally hold back on pulling your weight in society if a certain percentage of those around you have stopped pulling their weight.  It would make you a chump if you contributed, when the free-riders are just getting a free ride.

Soon the justification for selfishness becomes sanctified:  “The really good person looks out for himself and his family.”  It also becomes the reigning ontology — Britain’s prime minister Margaret Thatcher told us, in the 1980s, “There is no such thing as society. There are only individuals.”

She was wrong. Our species is adapted to social life, as are many other mammal species. We spontaneously place our trust in certain forms of leadership.  If these come tumbling down, because leaders stop acting in a trustworthy manner, we get very confused. There is no way a society can operate if lying is the norm. For example, there can be no law of contract and no dependable science!

Fear of Imminent War

I deem the fear of imminent war to be worth 20 points. (So, we’re up to 69 miserific points thus far.) Today, the US government is talking about warring on China as a way of supporting Taiwan, and warring on Russia to protect the people if the Ukraine. Vey likely each American citizen, who is at least vaguely aware of these threats, has daily pressure on him. For families living on military bases it must be exceptionally anxiety-producing.

I am not trying, here, to measure the likelihood of war.  We are talking, putatively about a deliberate creating, by the bad guys, of social misery. It’s my claim that such a thing is happening and that the ones doing it have worked out all our weaknesses. You may ask: Is it so bad to worry about a war that never comes about?  Sure.  Put yourself in the place of a 25-year-old who is trying to decide on a career path. Or trying to decide whether to raise a family. The very possibility of war will affect the decision.

Of the alleged “four targets” for the miserific calculus, the two that may figure into the citizen’s psyche when war is threatened are: self-confidence and access to resources. By the way, you often see on the Internet, advertisements for survival goods. But what is the real scene here? Are we likely to hide out in the mountains waiting for war to end? How long could we hold out? the US-Afghanistan war lasted 20 years.

Geoengineering, and School Shootings

You get the idea. Additional worries about “resources” are occurring thanks to deliberate changes in weather carried out by geo-engineering, and deliberate changes in farming such as by GMO foods and “terminal seeds.” (The newly patented seeds, when planted, bring forth fruit that itself does not contain any seeds for future use.)

The average person does not know about, or refuses to believe, such things, yet may well be subconsciously aware of them. In any case, all citizens in 2020, were given a display, with full media coverage, of the sudden lack of toilet paper in the shops. And in 2022 all mothers who were not breast-feeding were scared out of their wits by a supposed shortage of baby formula.

I award 15 points of misery for that resource-concern.  So now we need 16 points to achieve a total immiseration of society with 100 points. I award 9 points to school shootings, within the target of “unavailability of helpers.”  Quite possibly the lack of police performance, at the Uvalde school in May 2022, was organized in such a way as to let everyone know that dialing 911 no longer brings relief.

Immigration

How to find a final 7 points?  Consider the fact that the southern border of the US is very penetrable. Certainly many Americans are living in fear of an invasion by immigrants. I can sympathize with those people, but let me offer a different explanation as to how we are being  targeted by the US president’s open-door policy. It is causing Americans to be polarized as left-wing and right-wing.

The stirring up of domestic enmities is a very big deal, but I have not named “unity” as one of the four targets, so I won’t award points to the disruption of unity.  But I did name “ideals.” It has always been a point of pride that America is a melting pot.  It is also a point of pride that we are kind and respectful of people such as refugees. Our identity is related to our shared ideals.

Thus, it only to be expected that many Americans are uncomfortable with the current situation. We see on TV some families nearly drowning (or actually drowning) as they try to cross the water into the United States.  I am not here to say that sympathy and respect should dictate immigration policy.  Many other factors must be considered. But it is a blow to our ideals. I hope we overcome this loss as ideals are one of the best strengths we have.

Let’s give 7 points to the misery involved in this particular loss of the American ideal. Hence, 100 all up.

Summary

There is a miserific calculus that bad guys may use when targeting the good parts of our lives, with an eye to demoralizing and ruining our society, or so I claim.

The four targets that I envisioned as being under attack are: our self-confidence, our access to resources, the availability of helpers in case of a disaster, and our ideals. I awarded points to each of six problems that are known to everyone today — just check the newspaper!

Unions abandoning members:  6   self-confidence, availability of help, ideals

Lying as norm                        43   ideals (free rider holdback)

Of course, you may assign the points differently, and of course, there are many problems that did not get a mention but are contributing to misery.

  2. With respect, Mary, I think you misconstrue dictatorial motivation.

    The ultimate attraction is power over life and death and, by the time a person is able to accumulate that much power he or she is already psychopathic.

    It matters not whether this autocracy is of the 12th century or 2022, the behaviour, therefore motivation, is the same. The wielder wants to be able to allocate life or death at mearest whim, with the slightest weary movement of a finger to signify the wielder’s will.

    This behaviour is most notoriously and prosaically evident when an employer or supervisor makes sleeping with the worker’s spouse a condition of promotion, or of keeping one’s job. Chou Enlai is said to have observed that Kissinger is undoubtedly such a person and, in fact, was a lousy negotiator. He and Lin Piao had nothing but contempt for such people because these were typical of Chiang’s KMT behaviour.

    More specifically, a dictator sees people even more dispassionately than pieces on a chess board, as Zbigniew Brzezinski famously made clear. It is by hurting people that the psychopath can communcate with people. The more pain the more meaningful the communication. But this has nothing to do with strategies to expand power which, no doubt, are more attractive if the dictator is concomitantly inflicting pain, but this is much less satisfactory than a more personal imposition.

    But on a higher level, he or she gains satisfaction from the knowledge that thousands die, entirely incidentally to the main purpose. This makes him feel godlike.

        But what’s harmless in a baby can soon assume monstrous proportions in an adult. I’d argue that “psychopath” is just a word for those who’ve failed to meet life’s challenges.

        • A true psychopath is genetic. There have been many studies, including brain scans that confirm they are wired differently. You may be referring to the sociopath that adopts the psychopathic lifestyle.

    And are you saying “Some are born psychopathic and some have psycopathy thrust upon them?

    • The statistics I have read vary from country to country, however, generally around 5% of a population are psychopathic. Then there are others that become sociopaths by virtue of their life experiences. For example, an outlaw bikie gang may have a leader that is a psychopath and then there many others that become sociopaths to fit into the gang.

      That 5% figure is frightening. It means that one out of every 20 people you meet are psychos, lying, stealing, manipulative POS. I’ve got no use for them, I’d just as soon kill every one that I run into.

      • I read that the abolition of the death penalty, which used to eliminate about 3% of the population, probably all of whom were psychopathic, has left us with these crazies, most of whom are now CEOs.

        • I read a report of the attitude/culture/system of the Eskimos. If they had someone that presented a problem in the group, such as stealing or messing with someone’s wife, that person would be warned. They were allowed 3 warnings.

          The questioner asked what happened after the third warning. The answer was that out on a hunting party, that the psychopath would get pushed off the ice into the water.

          The same 3 strikes you’re out was displayed by many American Indian tribes. Life in the wild requires a tribe of different abilities to be able to survive. A psychopath that violated the cultural norms of the tribe 3 times would be ‘banished’, that is, sent out from the tribe to make it on their own. This would always result in a slow death to the psychopath.

    If asked why the bozos do what they do, my sociobiology answer is always the same, though I don’t really know if it’s accurate. It is:

      • Cathy says to write to heal oneself after trauma. I wholeheartedly agree (and add do art to that). But..
        I had an awful experience with the police at one stage over a complaint against one of their own.
        I was a compulsive daily diary writer. They were FULL of everything. Often with my own personal code of sarcasm or loaded one-liners enough to prompt my memory of much greater details. The police confiscated at least 8 years of them and held them for several years. There was only three words…”met Gxxxx Cxxxxx (name)” in reference to the particular incident.
        When they finally wrote the case off and returned them to me asked to see the next lot. I told them I had stopped writing any. They scanned the book shelf and spotted the two recent years, “Well, what’s that?” They grabbed them and yes, empty!

        They’d broken me. That was 24 years ago and no diaries since.
        It wasn’t just that they had stolen the diaries, they had stolen my inner self.

        They’d misinterpreted my cryptic codes, they’d “extrapolated” all sorts of fanciful reasons as to why I might have written such things that had nothing to do with the case, they’d interrogated me several times for hours….and my friends, apparently, with whom I had never disclosed the incident, assuming then that it was a lie. They assassinated my character, “deducted” that I had been abused by my father, NEVER HAPPENED, but had planted seeds that had caused me to question and ultimately ruin all those relationships, I loved my father. I loved my friends. I’d done nothing wrong.
        They dragged the process out over years, they fronted up at my various places of residence every time i moved, always en masse, at least two cop cars, enough to be obvious to the new neighbours, tarnishing those connections before they even began.
        Why would I want to commit anything to paper again?

    It’s a long journey from Tavistock to Woodstock nation to a massive Future Stock correction but the ‘organic’ method is clear: A rootstock is a plant, often just the stump of an established root system, used for grafting a cutting or bud from another plant. The grafted part, the scion, has the properties desired by the propagator, and the rootstock interacts with the soil to nourish the new plant.     Taviistock’s history is one thing, yet perhaps the process itself is more important. Therapists are taught to “trust the process,” and that fear and pain are part of it. Process groups are an extension of individual ‘processing,’ — addressing primary and secondary processes which are unconscious. To describe Tavistock today requires flying over the panorama of cultural landscapes.

    Process is the basis of individual and collective change. Processing integrates unconscious material but can also be applied to conflict resolution. This is edgework at the critical boundaries of identity. This technique of manipulating subconscious drives and social implosion — peer pressure, alienation, massaging personality, childhood programming and regression — is often exploited by cults.

    Tavistock is a behavior modifier. They modify behavior and reality by modifying semantics and the environment. What is a modifier? We can extrapolate its ‘netaphorical’ meaning [a product of the ‘net,’ cast by the Tavistock spell of invisibility] from the common definitions. Tavistock changes or reverses the meaning of everything from behind the scenes.
    Tavistock’s legitimate and bastard children include modified hybrids such as social psychology, social ecology, humanistic psychology, transpersonal psychology, conflict resolution, future studies, change agents, systems theory, decision theory. Tactics include psystrat, buzzwords, spin, pitching, sloganeering, polling, opinion-making, levels of control, human relations. Concepts modified include mother-child relations, casual sex, self-esteem, and empowerment.

    Tavistock experts planted ideas about humanism, behavior modification, group dynamics, paradigm shift, stress management, coping, processing, deconstruction, integration, ecology, psychiatry, cognitive structure, object relations. They created trends including Aquarian conspiracy, women’s liberation, generation gap, planned parenthood, population bomb, sensitivity training.

    Tavistock has captured the science of ‘transitions.’ They grab onto the psyche through the gaps in consciousness after inducing flux. Radicalization, counterculture, alternate life styles, classless society, controlled environment are such parameters. Drug culture, post-modernism, subcultures, and political correctness all found fertile soil in the world’s universities, taking root and spreading through networks of trained professionals.

    Rather than healing the sick, Tavistock makes the healthy ill.

    After World War II, the Tavistock-Frankfurt School networks profiled Americans, ostensibly to study “prejudice” in the United States. The study produced a notorious volume titled The Authoritarian Personality. In the 60s, another major polling-profiling operation by Tavistock networks, under a NASA grant, “examined” the impact of the space program on the population.

    Freud’s nephew, a Tavistock Institute allstar, Edward Bernays is the godfather of propaganda and the “engineered consent” of Madison Avenue. The Nazi’s employed techniques he outlined in the book PROPAGANDA, and later brought them back to the US under Operation Paperclip.

    Techniques were picked up by CIA and morphed into mind control operations such as programmed assassins and MK Ultra drug and mind control. The foreign and domestic public became their lab rats for covert activity and coercive mind control tactics, including drugs, persuasion, fear, projection and illusion.     You are “collateral damage” in the methodical pursuit for your soul. None of us escapes Tavistock-style “long range penetration and inner conditioning.” Programming instills a false consciousness about the nature of collective reality.

    No Exit

    We are in an existential double bind. Underlying forces are playing our underlying forces, modulating personal and collective moods like an emotional organ. CIA used to brag about its “Mighty Wurlitzer,” synchronized media control. Conflict, fear and trauma can be used to manipulate and control individuals and whole populations. Drugs are becoming ever more readily available, legally and illegally. Transnational drug trade supports even more black ops “social engineering” in other areas.

    Drugs are no longer needed for psyops because ELF weapons have been created to conduct the secret war with electronic frequency generators that cause the brain to resonate at whatever level is programmed. Disease and dis-ease can be broadcast with microwave mind control.

  10. Unfortunately, most people cannot comprehend that some are capable of evil beyond their worst nightmares. The serpents running things have no conscience, they believe ‘might makes right’ and if they can pull it off, and no one resists, then it is their right to do so.     UPDATE June 20, 2022: I originally intended to use the phrase “miserific calculus” (MC) as a way of measuring the total misery present in a society on a given day. That would make it possible to say “on July 1, 1995 the MC was such-and-such, and on July 1, 2006 it was such-and-such.” But I went off on a toot of giving numbers to the amounts of disparate attacks on four targets. I’d appreciate any comments on the idea of measuring society’s misery. And if you know of any already-existing scoring system for that, pray tell.
