The Need for an Independent Foreign Policy for Australia is Now Urgent

Australia has just marked the 70th anniversary of the signing of the ANZUS treaty, an agreement that links the United States, Australia and New Zealand. On this anniversary it is appropriate to ask what benefit the alliance actually offers to Australia. In theory, the treaty provides that in the event that one of the three is attacked, then the other two will come to its aid. That raises the immediate question, who is likely to actually attack any of the three?

The United States is possibly the most likely of the three to be attacked, most probably by an angry nation that has itself been the object of United States military intervention. There are a large number of possibilities. Since the end of World War II, the United States has been involved in military conflict, in one form or another, in more than 70 countries.

That conflict has ranged from outright invasion and occupation, as in the cases of Iraq and Afghanistan in this century alone, to more surreptitious invasions as in the cases of Libya and Syria. In the cases of those countries that are invaded, the United States always has an ostensible reason, however flimsy and ill-founded those justifications may be.

In the case of Iraq, it was the alleged possession of “weapons of mass destruction”. That turned out to be a complete fiction, discovered immediately after the invasion. It did not prevent the Americans from continuing their occupation. They and their Australian allies are still occupying that country, 17 years later, and despite a demand from the Iraqi government that they should leave.

As has been widely publicised in recent weeks, the Americans have finally been discharged from Afghanistan. Justification for that war was also a lie, the alleged the role of Osama bin Laden in the attacks on New York and Washington DC on 11 September 2001.

Osama bin Laden died of natural causes at the end of 2001, yet we were subjected to a fictional story about him being tracked down and killed years later, with the body buried at sea. Dumping the body has the perfect excuse of it never being available for inspection, something that would have destroyed the whole story. Even if the United States version of events were true, and Osama bin Laden was the reason for the invasion of Afghanistan, it hardly justifies a continuation of your occupation for more than a decade longer.

The truth of the matter is that these United States military adventures are always carried out for reasons other than the real one. The manifest lies told to justify these military escapades has never deterred the Australian government from committing Australian troops to the American cause. It was true in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

In the case of Vietnam, there was at least one Labor leader, Gough Whitlam, not prepared to tolerate a continuation of Australia’s commitment to that military misadventure. In withdrawing Australian troops as one of his first acts as prime minister, Whitlam gained the everlasting dislike of the Americans. Together with their agent, Governor-General John Kerr, the Americans worked tirelessly for the overthrow of the Whitlam government.

That experience had a salutary effect on the Labor Party who has never dared to pursue a policy in Australia’s interests if it conflicted with the United States aims. Recent revelations of the degree to which Prime Minister Bob Hawke was in fact beholden to United States imperialism should come as no surprise. No Labor leader since Hawke has shown the least inclination to charter an independent Australian foreign policy. The present Labor leadership cannot be relied upon to charter an independent foreign policy for Australia in the event, as seems likely, that they win the next federal election.

Rather than celebrating the 70th anniversary of the signing of the ANZUS treaty, therefore, it should rather be a time for genuine reflection and the asking of some serious questions. For example, from whom exactly is this country protected. Indonesia has never shown the least interest in a military conquest of Australia. There are those who will instinctively answer China, but again, where outside the fantasy life of some mainstream media hacks is there any actual evidence that China has the least interest in invading Australia? China’s preoccupations lie elsewhere, including advancing the interests of its Belt and Road Initiative, currently with economic ties to more than 140 countries (but not including Australia), and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation which is arguably the most important political grouping in the world today.

The frankly pathetic attempt by the United States to cobble together an anti-China alliance with a quartet of nations (along with Australia, India, and Japan) is doomed to miserable failure. India is a member of the SCO, and in a recent meeting of the Eastern Economic Forum (4th September 2021) prime minister Narendra Modi referred to Russia’s President Putin as his “dear friend” which says a lot about any Indian involvement in an attack on Russia’s close ally China.

Rather than tying itself to a declining power, Australia needs to look to its regional neighbours to forge closer economic and political ties. A look at a map shows where Australia lives in relation to the world, its geography matched by its trading relationships, with China and Japan accounting for more than 60% of Australia’s exports.

The United States alliance, rather than being a shield, has become a burden. It is long past the time when the relationship was reappraised.

  5. James… What manner of ‘geopolitical analyst’ is oblivious to Indonesia’s planned 1975 invasion of north Australia?

    The general who planned the attack actually explained the entire rationale to me and why it was abandoned. And Malcom Fraser referred to it seven times in repeated speeches, when he warned us that Amerca cannot be trusted. As the good Malcolm pointed out, the US provided Indonesia with weapons and munitions, training, landing craft and aircraft.

    Actually, as Malcom also said, the US betrayed us to Indonesia two times.

    Another area in which you clearly have no idea is the establishment of the ANZUS Treaty. This was never about anything except US installations and Australian and NZ beef exports. The US said it wanted to set up satellite navigation systems for their nuclear submarines in Australia and New Zealand, which was actually a convoluted PR tactic to head off public opposition. The Pentagon had actually decided on a site in WA from the outset.

    Nevertheless, the two PMs got their heads together and said “nothing doing”.

    Desperate, the White House asked how it could make the installations more attractive. The two PMs winked at each other and said in a singe voice, we want a guaranteed beef quota for import into the US. They got it.

    This commenced a covert diplomatic war that lasted until 2021… and continues. Australia and NZ lost the war thanks to the betrayal by Bob CIA Hawke; which is the real story behind David Lange’s Pacific denial of nuclear armed US ships.

    As to Whitlam’s sacking, this was specifically to prevent him naming Sir Arthur Tang, Doug Anthony, Richard Stallings, Peter Ables, and Bob Hawke, as CIA agents, which he would have done five hours later in Parliament.

    And as the rest of your article was old hat, I wonder why you bothered.

    May I suggest you write about issues we are ignorant about but that you have diligently researched.. objectively. We all need all the new knowledge we can get.

    A new coronavirus “variant of interest” named Mu – also known by its scientific name as B.1.621 – is being closely monitored by the World Health Organization (WHO), the agency has said.

    In its weekly epidemiological update, published on Tuesday, WHO warned it was becoming increasingly prevalent in Colombia and Ecuador, and showed signs of possible resistance to vaccines.

    Mu was first identified in Colombia in January 2021, and since then, there have been “sporadic reports” of cases and outbreaks in South America and Europe, WHO said.

    While the global prevalence of Mu among sequenced COVID-19 cases is below 0.1%, its prevalence has “consistently increased” in Colombia and Ecuador, where it is now responsible for around 39% and 13% of infections, respectively.

    Reports on the variant’s prevalence should be “interpreted with due consideration” given the low sequencing capacity of most countries, the agency said.
    More resistant to vaccines

    Mu is the fifth variant of interest to be monitored by the WHO since March. It has a number of mutations that suggest it could be more resistant to vaccines, the health agency warned, but stressed that further research would be needed to confirm this.

    Preliminary data show a reduced effectiveness of vaccines “similar to that seen for the Beta variant”. The WHO said it would be monitoring “the epidemiology of the Mu variant in South America, particularly with the co-circulation of the Delta variant…for changes”
    More infections

    As of 29 August, over 4,500 sequences (3,794 B.1.621 sequences and 856 B.1.621.1 sequences), genome sequences, analysed samples of the virus taken from patients, have been designated as Mu in the past four weeks. The sequences are used to track how it moves through the population, on an open-source genome repository, known as GISAID.

    Most of these have been reported in the U.S (2,065) and Colombia (852), Mexico (357) and Spain (473).

    Although this figure will be affected by both sequencing capacity, surveillance and the total number of cases in an area.

    The novel coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 124,811 people in Colombia, according to a WHO report on Wednesday.

    More than 4,905,258 confirmed cases have been officially diagnosed across the country since the start of the epidemic. As of August 27, a total of 34,247,170 doses of vaccine had been administered.
    C.1.2, not currently a concern

    South African scientists are closely monitoring the development of another new variant there, according to news reports in the country.

    However, C.1.2, is not yet a variant to follow, nor a variant of concern, according to the classification of the World Health Organization.

    “It does not appear that its circulation is increasing”, said Dr. Margaret Harris, a spokesperson for the WHO, during a UN press briefing in Geneva on Tuesday.

      I talked to two Chinese lately (this week) about the surveillance and they both told me you can’t say anything in China, you will be fitted up with some crime and jailed then killed or else someone will just come along and do a hit on you.

    • I think the story would be better to consider the fully controlled China Joe’s vast trove of equipment abandoned in Afghanistan and the rumours of ongoing interference there ( including re-invasion ), even though I think the best explanation for everything is that Russia told them to get out.
      Australia can’t separate from the US / UK for all the reasons but we should be able to expect better from the MIC and other such agencies.
      Tragically we all have one thing in common that is we’re all human and the legacy of that is very mixed.

All makes sense when you read about the brutal Bolshevik takeover of Russia and the genocide of tens of millions of Russians – mainly Christian and mainly workers and peasants – under the Soviet (particularly Stalin’s) regime – its prelude and aftermath. To this day, discussing current and past events with Russians can be very delicate. You can criticise Lenin or Stalin but not both. It is a fascinating exercise in observing psychology (and mass psychosis). An analogy would be like trying to discuss Gallipoli with patriotic ANZAC veterans of subsequent wars (including my own father).
