The Sydney Morning Herald Demonstrates Yet Again Australia’s Colonial Status

The complete lack of independent thinking by the Australian political establishment has been glaringly obvious in the past few days as the situation in Ukraine becomes increasingly tense. The latest was a statement, or perhaps more accurately, a threat against Russia issued by Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne.

The anti-Russian sentiment is a bipartisan affair, with Labor willingly joining the anti-Russian sentiments expressed by Senator Payne.  As reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on 26 January, support is growing within both the Liberal and Labor caucuses to use stronger measures against Russia. The Herald reports this as showing unity with the United States, Britain and the European Union.

This is a complete misrepresentation of the actual situation. The United Kingdom and the United States have recently issued threats against Russia, and the British sent several planeloads of weapons to Ukraine. But that was not supported by the European Union.  Both France and Germany refused the British overflight rights for their planes, forcing them to make a lengthy detour over Denmark.

In this action they were supported by the Italian government. Even little Croatia has withdrawn its troops from the NATO forces currently threatening Russia, the Prime Minister announcing that they wanted no part of NATO’s belligerence towards Russia.

Ms Payne was quoted as saying that “we are deeply concerned by the military build-up on Ukraine’s border.” There is no such build-up. The United States has published what a manifestly doctored photographs showing Russian troops literally in open space awaiting orders to move. In fact, the photos have been doctored to remove actual evidence of a standard military camp, established several years ago. The Russian forces are located hundreds of kilometres from Ukraine. The Russians have repeatedly stated that they have no intention of invading Ukraine, and one would have to ask, why would they wish to invade?

The Ukrainian economy is in dire straits. Recent figures show a continuing dramatic decline in Ukraine’s economy. Russia has no desire, much less need, to take on a failing state.

The Ukraine is a failed state, with a declining economy and population, with several million of their citizens fleeing the country in recent years. There is absolutely no mention in the article of Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the 2015 agreement regarding how it should behave toward the two breakaway republics of the Donbass. They have waged war against the Donbass ever since, killing tens of thousands of its citizens. On this, the other signatories to the Minsk agreement, Germany and France, have been conspicuously silent.

To their recent credit, both Germany and France have shown an increasing impatience with Ukrainian intransigence. There may finally be some serious attempt to implement the 2015 agreement which Ukraine has consistently ignored.

The Herald refers to the fact that Australia has sought to punish 52 entities and 168 individuals since the “annexation” of Crimea and the downing of MH 17 in 2014. The western media is very fond of using the word “annexation” to describe the events in Crimea, but such a term is seriously misleading. Crimea was part of Russia for hundreds of years until it was “gifted” to Ukraine by then Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev in 1954. The Russian parliament was not consulted, and neither were the Crimeans.

After the United States backed coup that overthrew the legitimate Ukrainian government the Crimeans held a referendum.  More than 90% voted to re-join Russia, which duly happened, terminating Ukraine’s 60-year rule of the country. It was a democratic exercise that the West, particularly the United Kingdom and United States, have refused to accept. They raised no objection when Kosovo underwent a similar process, presumably because Kosovo became an ally of the West.

The Russians have always denied any involvement with the downing of MH 17, shot down while flying over Ukraine. The farcical trial of three Russians and one Ukrainian over this incident has been dragging on in the Dutch courts for years. It has done much in the process to destroy the Dutch reputation for holding fair trials. A decision is due later this year. No one has any optimism that they will apportion blame to wear it properly belongs: at the feet of the Ukrainian government.

It is no surprise that Ms Payne should support the United States and United Kingdom view. Australia is after all a member of a pact involving those two nations in what is a farcical attempt to exert colonial dominance in the Indo Pacific region. What is sad however is that the Labor Party has seemingly abdicated any concept of an independent foreign policy, joining Payne in her ill-informed criticism of Russia, just as they support the AUKUS arrangement.

This whole episode demonstrates yet again that Australia is not an independent country, but merely a mouthpiece for its United States and United Kingdom masters. It is of major concern that a newspaper such as the Sydney Morning Herald should blindly follow this kowtowing to the British and the Americans. Australia has no vital interest at stake in Ukraine. If they wished to assert an opinion, then urgent Ukrainians to carry out what they agreed to in the 2015 Minsk agreement would be a good start.

  1. James – you are tinkling around the edges of the real issue in all this. Who controls the Ukraine government? Why would the Ukraine government be a puppet government to foreign influence – among many other criminal actions, would it be to protect the human trafficking that has been going on there for decades? Who supports the Ukraine against Russia – would it be the globalist controlled West, including Australia and New Zealand which is what that fat fascist Payne represents?

    And why single out the Sydney Morning Herald for special attention when the entire main stream media is supporting the Ukraine puppet government?

    You need to know the ‘why’s’ before you can fully grasp the real situation occurring in the Ukraine.

      I mean how do you determine the reality instead of the fakery? (I know you do not make things up.)

    • Nemesis – James’ fringe article as you described it is an excellent starting point for those of us just beginning to look at this issue. The things you speak of belong in the ‘deeper look’ basket. The immediate story to get people thinking outside of the box, is exposing the (AUKUS) demonization of Russia. If you start with the rabbit hole you will lose your audience.

I certainly don’t agree with everything they say but there is a lot of relatively well-informed commentary, particularly on current events involving the Ukraine. Of course they are very biased on certain historical topics, but that’s what free speech is all about and robust discussion should be encouraged – so that humanity can move forward.

  20. I don’t believe Russia is a risk to anyone if they were simply left alone. From start to the p[resent day America has always seen itself as the good guys but study the way they have placed their offensive military capability. Since when has Putin been a risk to the US if only the US would get back into their own box.
