Happy Anzac Day. Happy? There’s a poem below entitled “When You See Millions of the Mouthless Dead.” Gumshoe readers may agree that this feels about right for our era…. Well, at least we can take encouragement from the fact that World War One did in fact come to an end.
These three poets died in the war. Charles Hamilton Sorley was only 20 at death. Rupert Brooke was 27. Isaac Rosenberg was an elderly 28.
The Soldier

Brooke sailed with the British Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 28 February 1915 but developed pneumococcal sepsis from an infected mosquito bite. French surgeons carried out two operations to drain the abscess but he died of septicaemia at 4:46 pm on 23 April 1915, on the French hospital ship Duguay-Trouin, moored in a bay off the Greek island of Skyros in the Aegean Sea, while on his way to the landings at Gallipoli.

Rosenberg was born on November 25, 1890 in Bristol. His parents, Dovber “Barnett” Rosenberg and Hacha “Hannah” Davidov Rosenberg, were Jewish immigrants from Russia. During Rosenberg’s childhood, they moved into the squalid streets of London’s Jewish ghetto and set up a butcher’s shop. The shop was soon confiscated, however, and Rosenberg’s parents were forced to work as itinerants during the rest of his life.

Charles Hamilton Sorley was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, on May 19, 1895. In 1900, the family moved to England when Sorley’s father, a professor of moral philosophy, accepted a post at Cambridge. In 1908 Sorely received a scholarship to Marlborough College, and after completing his studies there, he was offered a scholarship to University College, Oxford, in 1913. Before beginning at Oxford, however, …he enlisted in the British Army and was sent to the Western Front [and] was killed by a sniper at the Battle of Loos on October 13, 1915. His body was never found…. Thirty-seven of his poems were published posthumously as Marlborough and Other Poems (Cambridge University Press, 1916).

I was reading a letter in the newspaper that was talking about Australians today. She referred to the “snowflake” society.
The author of this letter believed that Australian society is so ‘politically-corrected’ inclined now that should there be an “invasion” of their culture and ways, the contemporary Australian would embrace them to have their own rights, their livelihood etc removed instead of defending them.
Do the vast majority of peoples in western nations suffer from ‘Stockholm syndrome?’ I am starting to think so, look how many people get angry when you try to ‘redpill’ them. The biggest hurdle being that they cannot accept having been brainwashed. Why would anyone think that they have not been brainwashed when brainwashing has been studied for millenia, where most people are brainwashed but you (the one objecting to the redpill) are not?
I guess this would mean that Stockholm Syndrome is far and away the most common neurological condition.
The irony on this ANZAC morning is that I am speaking with a few ‘protective parents’ that have had the “state” remove their child/ren.

Funny you couldn’t say “bloody” in the old days (by my lady ie Mary for non catholics), they used to say “jolly” a lot instead. It changed in the 80’s with Telstra, it used to be called Bloody Telecom, then after about 1985 it was called F#$%en Telstra. Another example of this is an old song about “a Jolly Swagman” which would nowadays be written “a F#$%en Homeless Unemployed” (note gender specificity removed).

W3, I never knew that the original “jolly swagman” was carrying a connotation of “bloody.” Is that true?
In the hotels they had the public bar on the corner and the saloon bar at the side, ladies did not go in the public bar, that’s where they all said “bloody”, the working class wives all used “jolly” as an adjective if they were angry, this is all slightly before my time but you catch the drift even some years later.
In my young days a wireless announcer got the boot for saying the word bloody on air.

In early September 1991 Kevin Gilbert was photographed by Richard Briggs against the background of the Australian War Memorial. He carries a cross in almost Christ like manner as he walks towards Anzac Parade. However it is unlikely that this symbolism was Christian. Gilbert’s creation spirit was Baiame. Rather the cross was generally symbolic of the sacrifice of the Aboriginal inhabitants of Australia during more than 200 years of undeclared war against invasion and of the ongoing suffering of his people. Just five years after the “war to end all wars” the world is faced with all kinds of crisis,
national, economic, political and personal. Prince Albert (later King George VI) gets
married, the French invade the German Ruhr to enforce the draconian WWI reparations,
Billy Hughes is replaced by Stanley Bruce as Australia’s prime minister, the civil war in
Ireland ends, Mussolini and his fascist party march into power in Italy, hyperinflation
begins in Germany and the six hundred and twenty four year old Ottoman Empire is
coming to an end. The poem above gives us a returned soldier’s summary of 1923,
counterpoising the world events with his own difficulties. “What I Fought For” views
the world not from the heights of power but from a down to earth standpoint, one that
has no confidence in either the promises or the solutions offered by the rulers of the day………..
