We Are in an Interregnum. Let’s look for a Helmsman

Per The Cambridge Dictionary, an INTERREGNUM “is a period of time in which a country or an organization has no leader.” (From the Latin words inter, between, and regnum, rule by a king or president.)

Following the United States’ kidnap of President Maduro of Venezuela on January 3, 2026, people are saying that Venezuela has no leader. I don’t know that country’s situation — perhaps the vice president accedes to the leadership. But I can say, as an American citizen and constitutionalist, that at this moment the United States has no leader.

We are in an Interregnum. Donald Trump is “faking it” as president. I am not referring to any particular sins he has committed, I am referring to the fact that he has no sense of being under the authority of the United States Constitution. For several months he has been boasting of things he can do – things that even a brief look at “the Parchment” show to be not allowed.

Origins

As of April 17, 1775, we were ‘colonials’ of Great Britain. Then we started to fight the Revolutionary War, with the first shot being fired by Massachusetts ‘Minutemen’ on April 18, or the morning of April 19, 1775. This did not appear to cause an Interregnum, as King George remained on the throne until the Declaration of Independence on July 4,1776.

By 1781, the states had written up Articles of Confederation, and by 1787 a constitution was produced by delegates from the 13 states. “We the People” ratified it in 1788. Since that time, the legality of rulership in the United States of America has not been in question. And it still is not in question. The Constitution is the reference point for who can do what in the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary.

Legally, Trump cannot do the things he does; Congress cannot abdicate its role (as it often has in the last few years); and the US Supreme Court cannot make crazy rulings, such as that when a president acts criminally on official duty, he is immune from indictment.

As far as I can tell, the citizenry nowadays is unaware of its “ownership” of the US government. For decades, The Powers That Be (i.e., Trump’s bosses) have gradually fed us one scandal after another. As these never lead to punishment, the public thinks anything goes.

Gradualism works! People are now just waiting to see what happens next. Today the US grabs Venezuela, tomorrow it mandates, say, abortion of all white babies… or whatever. This is ridiculous – we just sit back and act as if the people have no recourse.

Helmsman

To call attention to our current situation, I label it an Interregnum. We don’t have a constitutional president on deck. We need a leader who will lead and at the same time follow the law.

Technically, an abandonment of the job by Donald Trump would result in the inauguration of JD Vance, but he is just as dismissive of the parchment – and of the history of our Republic – as Trump. So also is the next person in line for succession, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.

We need a leader. I suggest that someone trustworthy be accepted as our Helmsman. It’s a good word, it means “a person who steers the ship.” Granted, I can’t see how he or she could actually override the work of president, congressperson, or chief justice. Those elected or appointed persons would remain in place, but the Helmsman would give the citizenry some idea of what needs to be done.

It would take a very talented and strong-willed individual. I have often thought that the presidency is nearly an impossible task. Helmsmanship would require that the individual be as clever as a president — and more so, as the public’s claiming of him/her would be controversial.

Personally, I wish that Thomas Massie would become Helmsman. He is currently a member of the US House of Representatives. He would not have to give up his seat. He could do his helmsman work on, say, Sundays. Or during lunch break, whatever.

Or, the Helmsman could be someone who isn’t connected to government. Some names that come to mind are: Anneke Lucas, Frank Schaeffer, Catherine Austin Fitts, Cynthia McKinney, all of whom have leadership as part of their personality and part of their experience.

The Helmsman could, among other things, do ‘hearings.’ Their invited testifiers would be persons who know of bad things lurking out there such as the use of cell towers to torture us, drones to kill us, or DEW to wipe out cities.

Such hearings do not particularly require that we have any Helmsman at all; you can do it yourself near the front steps of your State House – seriously.

Please give it some thought.

    Maduro was a mafia guy, didn’t he do a coup to start with ?
    Maduro armed everyone with the intent to start a bloodbath.
    Dominion voting machines ( Venezuela ) rigged the election by placing cell-phone receivers on the mainboard which were operated from China, as demonstrated by “TheMyPillowGuy” who has since been bankrupted if I heard right.
    Geopolitically, China has started its own PetroDollar and this is the big one.
    Apparently a lot of it was based in Venezuela and required the Panama Canal.
    So the US has been at war since conception, I think not at war about 5% of the time.
    Capturing Maduro could be the best war the world has ever seen in history.

        I had a similar situation with ants, where I am the USA and they are Spain, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Arabia, Venezuela, but I would not team up with Bibi, that would be in the metaphor, the exterminators.
        They say the King of Norway is pulling $2T out of Caterpillar back to his sovereign investment fund, his cover story is Caterpillar is being used in Gaza. Maybe he’s going to plough it into his own military.

    • Starting with Vancouver which has the drugs and Lberta which has so much oil, Trump should liberate everything until he gets to Canberra. There is nothing of value in Canberra though so he could use it for above ground nucular testing.
