Where Are We Headed, Part One: Defining the Nation

A nation is a fairly new invention. For much of the tens of thousands of years of Homo sapiens’ existence, people lived in small groups, then in clans, and then in tribes.  Empires developed when a group had enough organization and will power to dominate some or all of its neighboring tribes.

Examples of empires in ancient times are the Greek, the Persian, the Roman, and the Chinese. Examples in the Middle Ages are the Arab empire and Japan’s conquest of Korea.

In modern times, dating from, say, 1600, the Dutch had the first far-flung empire, including Indonesia, as ocean going vessels had become invented. Portuguese and Spanish explorers laid claim to almost the whole continent of South America.

British explorers reached Australia in 1788 having already sent colonizers to several places on North America’s east coast. All of the empires had royal person in charge, or at least nominally in charge, and all had armed warriors.

The goal of an empire was to be the top dog and thus avoid becoming someone else’s underdog. It was also intimately connected with grabbing the resources of the weaker tribes. This led to long-distance movement of commodities such as the Dutch bringing spices from the Middle East, The French taking furs from Canada. The British engaged in a slave trade and an opium trade.

The concept of a nation is associated, in Europe, with the French Revolution of 1789 that overthrew the king.  Thus “the French people” became an entity. This is not to say that others hadn’t tried to use the people to make the decisions. Norway notably had a rather open parliament called “The Thing.”

There was also a non-royal entity in Europe known as the papacy. At times, the Catholic Pope held secular power and bossed kings around, in the name of God.  For a while there was, in Germany a “holy Roman Empire. And as late as 1155, Pope Adrian IV determined that Ireland be under British rule.

Individual religious leaders could also have influence by claiming to deliver a message from God. The prophet Mohammed led his people in wars, circa 640, St Thomas Aquinas, around 1270, influenced the doctrine of the Church, Luther in 1517 got righteous about Church corruption thus starting the Protestant revolution, which then led to civil wars and some “regime change” of monarchs.

That is to say, words, rather than military strength, could get people to look upon some new arrangement as desirable and worth pursuing. And closely related to statements by divine messengers, there was the normal human desire to follow a plan that boded well for oneself. This may explain the 1776 Declaration of Independence in which British subjects in America pointed to bad behavior of King George III, and said Enough!  Subjection was replaced by talk of Rights.

Instincts

This article is looking at groups, not individuals. The very fact that one is born into a group has a big determining factor on the lives of its members. For instance, it may result in his being part of a conquering group or part of the conquered group. The possibilities are partly determined by technology – as noted above, ocean-going vessels enabled the Dutch to reach Asia, and the Spanish to reach South America.

So what motivated the Dutch, as a group (with maybe one member pushing the group), to bother to travel to Indonesia? The immediate prize may have been the spice trade, but here we are looking at instincts. Pursuing an economic advantage is no doubt something we do instinctively in our individual life.

But does a group have an instinct? I believe each person possesses a group instinct. For his own survival in evolutionary tines, he had to “fall in” with what his fellows were trying to do in terms of avoiding death. Even if no human enemy group was on the horizon he had to hunt in packs, as wolves do, against predators or to subdue prey.  Once human enemies did appear, he had to act groupish.

Plain observation tells us that an instinct to huddle with one’s group is part of the human psyche, especially of the male. A pleasant emotion comes with it – just as a pleasant emotion accompanies the love of one’s own family.

In some ways those emotions are parallel, a group can be jealous of a rival group in the same way that a man may be heavily motivated by the feeling of jealousy toward an individual. Here the individual has the added pressure to be strong against the rival so he and his mates can rejoice together in victory.

Plus, there is a big reward for deploying this instinct. A person who is patriotic and makes sacrifices for his country get praised as virtuous and/or heroic.

“Intergroup Morality”

It is important to note that an offshoot of our in-groupism is that we have no moral restraint in dealing with an enemy – or perhaps just a bunch of strangers. In my book Morality among Nations (1990), I claim that morality does not exist for one’s fellowman in general but for those with whom we have daily interaction, that is, our group.

Both altruism and restraint of one’s selfishness have to do with making group life work well. This is contradicted in the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan, where a passerby came to the rescue of someone who was foreign to him. There we saw the man acting on his normal morality – to be helpful to a person in trouble. But if, instead of a one-on-one encounter, it had been a group-to-group encounter, the altruism would not flow unless and until one’s group made sure it was not a trap of some sort.

In most such cases – where we see a whole foreign group suffering – we may express sympathy, using moral words, but not take action. Pierre van den Berge, in his book The Ethnic Phenomenon (1981), says that what often looks like us having a cruel bent to foreigners really only means that we have not included them “under our umbrella of altruism.”

I consider it very important for us to own up to our dual moral system. If we don’t, then our cruel actions abroad may look as though they come from an instinct for cruelty. No (say I) they are part of a second moral system in us where we cater to the needs of our group in a way that excludes strangers.

Of course, when we are under attack, it looks moral – in the eyes of all parties – for us to fight back with full aggression, and full trickery. All is fair in love and war. “My nation, wrong or wrong.”

We should stop twisting the facts of what we have done, to make it sound as though whatever we do is for a good cause. It may be for plain old conquest. The words to “The Marine’s Hymn” include the line “First to fight for right and freedom and to keep our honor clean…” What a joke.  Everyone on the other side is aware that we are not fighting for freedom, much less for ‘right.” We are fighting because that is what group’s do: they fight.

We will return in a later part of this series, to see what can be done about the extreme harm caused by our lack of intergroup morality.

Territoriality

This series has the title “Where Are We Headed?”. I think we are headed into disaster. I will try to present other ways to proceed, but here in Part One: Nation, and soon, in Part Two: Government, I am trying to get behind the definition of those two words. What really is a nation? I have shown (however crudely) its emergence in history, for which the basic factor is that humans live in groups.

But another instinct needs to be considered also – territoriality. Many bird and mammal species have a territory that they consider their home. It’s “theirs” and not someone else’s. At times they kick an intruder out. At other times, the potential intruder simply knows enough to listen to a warning call.

In modern times, we associate the governing body of our group with a particular territory. If you ask someone to describe “America,” they might start to describe our way of government. “It’s a republic formed by liberation from its British masters, with semi-sovereign states.” Or they might say “It extends laterally from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans, and longitudinally from the Mexican border to the Canadian border.”

I am bringing Territoriality up in conjunction with “what is a nation?” Many people unthinkingly assume that ownership of a particular landmass is somehow a “given” thing. In a world where globalism is being forcibly thrust upon us we need to know how to think about territory. More on that later.

  1. Well some claim the Icelandic Althing was the first parliament but they had various “things” all over the place, they still have the Storting in Oslo which might be translated as the “Big Thing”, got to keep things simple like Ikea.
    As for Holy Roman Empire, it lasted about 1000 years and theoretically ended sometime around Napoleon, now what was Napoleon but a creation, always showing his “hidden hand”, and responsible for mass death and virtual suicide when he sent the conscripts to Russia. Men have this instinct to go out and hunt ( I think you made a typo when you wrote “huddle” ) and the Imperial Globalists of the era knew how to exploit it, “we” have been played all along. The Holy Roman Empire merged itself into the expeditionary empires of Western Europe and made an industry out of the backwards foreign places, leaving the Germans to tear themselves apart, as they are so good at. The legacy of the HRE might be the oversized number of princes floating around in the vicinity of Germany, all trying to get a bigger slice of pie. In the case of Germany, is it a nation, has it ever been a nation more than briefly, it doesn’t seem to work. In the case of France or Gaul, it seems to have existed for a long time. In the case of the USA, the place was manufactured and the citizens brainwashed into thinking things that are not exactly true. The USA has a 2nd generation manufacture in Liberia, god knows what goes on there that we don’t know about. If a nation is not defined by territorial boundaries then what does define it, Korea would be a nation but it’s survival strategy has been to split itself into two so it can kowtow in two directions at once.

    • E.B. – I once thought like you do about the threat that Islam poses to any culture that invites such a regressive system of political/social/religious control into its midst.

      Here, in this country, AustraliaOne has made known to those who have come here to take over, that there will be a reckoning for them if they persist in their supremacist beliefs. It is my opinion, that we are already well on the way to be ridding ourselves of the forces that have been able to exercise their will over those, who have been only too willing (politicians/bureaucracy) to carry out their agenda, which has always been, the eventual and total control over this planet.

      Each individual country will have its own opportunity to rid itself of the cultures that will never assimilate or even acknowledge the law of the lands that they now still occupy – the time is fast coming for everyone to be able to live in their own sovereign nation.

        • It’s not a good speech at all, it’s more bullshit. At 8:00 he says he … will not accept Palestinian refugees into Jordan … however Jordan is the eastern half of Palestine, it’s another bait and switch trick.
          People are too busy watching football to understand history.
          So the Gazans, who are a mix of Palestinian refugees and the “sea-peoples”, can all be genocided, while business suited arseholes stand around talking up their high moral ground.
          The entire speech frames this refusal to allow West Palestinians into East Palestine. Sickening. The higher classes squash the lower classes like bugs. They all know what they are doing, bunch of frauds.

            The founding of modern, Israel, was a Rothschild adventure into eventually controlling, not only the middle eastern states, but the entire world.

            When Israel falls, so will Mossad and the evil controlling influence over the entire globe, fall with it.

            And that is why, Israel has been kept for last.

        The exposure of the Zionist Empire’s Globalist plan, has now been laid out for everyone to note.

        Maybe the good King does not realize that his Truth has been addressed in the wrong institution, or maybe his address has also been part of the plan to expose the U.N. Globalist agenda, that Israel has been controlling ever since the U.N. became a world authority that too many willing nations signed onto.
