Will Australia Draw the Necessary Lessons from the Fiasco in Afghanistan?

By  James O’Neill*

In 2001 when the United States decided to attack Afghanistan the Australian Labor Party opposed John Howard’s immediate decision to join the Americans in what was to become their longest war. The public were told at the time that the reason for attacking Afghanistan was that they were refusing to surrender Osama bin Laden, the alleged mastermind of the attacks in New York City and Washington DC on 11th September of that year.

We now know that the decision of the George Bush administration to attack Afghanistan had in fact been on the agenda of his first cabinet meeting in January 2001. Afghanistan occupies a crucial location in South Asia, with borders adjoining seven nations, including China, whom the Americans were anxious to encircle. More than 200 other bases encircling China were apparently not enough.

Bin Ladin was eventually captured in Pakistan, “tried” executed and buried at sea in what is an enduring disgrace. The Americans never contemplated invading Pakistan despite their role in giving shelter to bin Laden. This further emphasised that the invasion of Afghanistan had nothing to do with bin Laden, but was part of a wider United States geopolitical strategy.

Not the least of United States motives for the invasion was also the lucrative heroin trade that the Taliban government in Afghanistan had virtually eliminated. One of the earliest consequences of the American invasion was a massive increase in heroin production.

By this year, Afghanistan accounted for approximately 90% of world heroin production. The proceeds of this trade provide a major source of “off the books” income for the CIA, who had immediately taken over control of production following the 2001 invasion. It is not surprising that the CIA opposed Trump and then Biden’s plans to evacuate Afghanistan. The guarding of that lucrative crop was one of the tasks of the Australian army personnel in Afghanistan, although that was a fact never mentioned, let alone admitted, by the Australian media.

Part of the deal that both China and Russia have struck with the new Taliban government of Afghanistan is that the heroin crop will once more be a target for their destruction. There is no reason to believe that the attitude of the Taliban government has changed from the position they held in the 1990s. Destruction of the crop is expected to be a priority of the new government.

It Is difficult to overstate the damage that the fiasco of United States abandonment of Afghanistan has done to their reputation. The rapid and unseemly abandonment of Afghanistan will be noted in the capitals of the world and appropriate notes taken of the value of the United States “protection”.

Unfortunately, it is not a listen likely to be absorbed by the Australian government, irrespective of who wins the next election. As noted above, the Labor Party initially opposed Australia’s involvement in the war. That initial dislike of Australian involvement did not influence the decision to retain Australian troops during the later Rudd-Gillard – Rudd government of 2008 – 2016. The lesson to be drawn from that exercise is that the Labor Party is as much in hock to the United States as all of their predecessors since the CIA engineered overthrow of the Whitlam government in November 1975.

Recent revelations of the close contact between the Hawke government and the Americans simply confirms the point. The Americans now have access to at least eight military bases in Australia. In addition, the Australian Navy takes part in US military exercises in the South China Sea and the Straits of Hormuz, the sea route for 80% of China’s ship-based exports. One will look in vain for any foreign policy statements by the Labor opposition that distinguishes them from an ongoing commitment to the United States antagonism towards China.

The attitude of the Australian government to the thousands of Afghanistan citizens fearful for their future with the Taliban takeover of the country is a case in point. The initial steps taken by the Australian government seemed designed to create obstacles for those citizens. Under public pressure, they are now making noises about doing something, but it may be too little, too late.

The shabby treatment of its allies is again something that will not have gone unnoticed around the world. The Australian government will find it more difficult to garner local support when they next follow the United States into another war designed to enhance United States interests. One may rest assured that there will surely be another war. It is one of the characteristics of the United States ruling classes that they are singularly incapable of learning from past mistakes.

One object of United States desire for regime change is assuredly Iran. The Americans have neither forgotten nor forgiven the Iranians for the overthrow of their pet lackey the Shah, in the 1979 revolution. Ever since then the United States has waged a campaign against the Islamic Republic. The United States – Iran experience also offered another valuable example of why the United States cannot be trusted to adhere to agreements.

The so-called Iran nuclear deal was negotiated by President Obama on behalf of the United States and signed in 2015. It was arbitrarily withdrawn from by President Trump in 2018. His successor, Joe Biden, has taken no steps to re-join the deal. Instead, no doubt under pressure from the Israelis, he has sought to negotiate new arrangements, particularly aimed at eliminating Iran’s nuclear enrichment program. They (the Americans and the Israelis) claim that it is intended to pave the way to Iran having nuclear weapons, an allegation the Iranians dispute.

This whole argument, if nothing else, highlights the incredible hypocrisy of the United States’ position. They make no mention ever of the fact that there is a nuclear-armed power in the Middle East region, and that is Israel. Israel also happens to have an appalling record in the mistreatment of its own Arab citizens. It continues to illegally occupy Syrian territory on the Golan Heights that is captured in 1968 and shows every sign of intending to continue to hold onto that territory. It is a subject that the Americans refuse to discuss. The Australian government is no better, doing Israel the courtesy of actually refraining from any criticism of its blatantly illegal occupation of Syrian territory.

An optimist would suggest that the fiasco of the Afghanistan travesty is a perfect opportunity for the Australian government to rethink the whole of its disastrous military alliance with the United States. It is unlikely to happen. A more likely prospect is that Australia will get drawn into the next United States war of choice. That it will further damage its relationship with its largest trading partner seems beyond the mental capability of Australian governments to grasp.

  2. I was just reading an article elsewhere which included the phrases:

“I remember going to my first antiwar rally in October of 2001 to protest our attack on Afghanistan in retaliation for 9/11. […] I didn’t see how dropping bombs on regular Afghanis who had nothing to do with Bin Laden or the 9/11 attacks would help anything,”

“So, when Bin Laden bombed us with tacit Taliban support … “.

{is that what they call virtue signalling … or gaslighting ?? – I don’t know what these actually mean.)

  4. ‘Small number’ of SAS troops ‘will STAY in Afghanistan to advise local forces’ when the majority of UK and US personnel withdraw after 20-year conflict

Group of SAS soldiers expected to stay in Afghanistan in an 'advisory' capacity

It comes as the last regular 750 British troops left Afghanistan on Sunday

On Sunday, a Taliban official said that the movement would soon declare the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan from the presidential palace in Kabul.

    https://uprootedpalestinians.wordpress.com/2021/08/16/taliban-to-declare-islamic-emirate-of-afghanistan/

Earlier today, the Taliban announced capturing the Afghan presidential palace and entering it in Kabul, following Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s departure from toward Tajikistan – information not confirmed by the Afghan government.

An Afghan presidency source said today, Sunday, President Ashraf Ghani agreed to resign in light of the deteriorating situation in the country.

Two Taliban officials told Reuters there would be no transitional government in Afghanistan, adding that the group expects a complete handover of power.

The officials’ words came after the Taliban ordered its forces to enter Kabul.

A Taliban spokesperson asserted that the movement wants a peaceful transition of power, assuring foreign nationals that there is no fear for their safety.

    • x+767… Probably a pedantic correction, but significant in terms of the universality of the Taliban takeover… The Taliban forces did not enter Kabul until those already within had secured the city, apparently, without resistance. ie everybody Pashtun already knew in advance what the outcome would be.

How much did the Afghan War cost?

“When you add up the cost of Defense and State Department funds sunk into Operations Enduring Freedom and Resolute Support, then throw in the cost of caring for the conflicts’ veterans and the interest on the money borrowed to cover it all, you’re looking at over $2 trillion, according to a report released Friday.” [source]

I estimate that’s about around $7000 per U.S. citizen. Real value for money! What about the allies?

The UK and Germany – who had the largest numbers of troops in Afghanistan after the US – spent an estimated $30bn and $19bn respectively over the course of the war. [source]

Of course, a lot of people also died, but we won’t go into that. So, what was it all about?

The “prole feed” version of why we were in Afghanistan for TWENTY YEARS!!!! was (1) to fight terrorism, (2) improve women’s education and opportunities, and (3) create a nice cosy environment for Afghan’s LGBTQ+ population…………….”

  7. Another war which the imperialist US lost

    https://www.theoccidentalobserver.net/2021/08/17/kabullshit/

“……………….. the US had a rival, namely China, which decided, as part of its Belt and Road Strategy, to build its own pipeline linking Turkmenistan to China’s vast industrial hinterland. By 2009, Turkmeni natural gas was flowing all the way to Shanghai.

That was the real death knell for Western involvement in Afghanistan, greatly lowering the incentives to stay there year after year.

After 2009, Western involvement increasingly became a question of saving face and protecting political reputations, while also forlornly hoping that the Afghans would turn their backs on the Taliban.

The writing was clearly on the wall, but the Obama Administration thought it was worth a couple more rolls of the dice. That is what led to the pointless troop surges of 2009 and 2010:…………”

    • MSM ( I think alJazeera ) reports the Russian embassy is still operating in Kabul. Russia seems to be in a position to stay neutral in this great reset / great cold war scenario. Russia was of course colonised by Swedish vikings 1000 years ago which is why so many look Swedish and the place names are similar ( eg gard = grad ). St Petersburg used to be a Swedish fortress. So Russia seems to be defining its “neutral” boundaries. If they have agreed to share Afghanistan with China, one would expect to see a lot going on in future. Will the Afghans all get lockdowns and tracking and be given social credit scores and e-money ?
      Wait and see.

“Tony Blinken may blabber that “we were in Afghanistan for one overriding purpose – to deal with the folks who attacked us on 9/11.””

Those Israelis must be really pissed that this focuses the spotlight back on 911.

    Elsewhere in the article:

“By Saturday night, Marshal Dostum was fleeing with a bunch of military to Uzbekistan …“

“Ghani finally saw the writing on the wall and disappeared from the presidential palace without even addressing the potential negotiators. With his wife, chief of staff and national security adviser, he escaped to Tashkent, the Uzbek capital.“

Now that is hilarious – isn’t Uzbekistan the haven for fleeing Uyghurs?

  9. James O’Neill

That was your least analysed article yet.

As we all know, some of us back in 2007, the Talban had banned all opium and alcohol.

First, within 2 years of the US invasion, Afghanistan heroin already constituted 90% of European heroin, as stated by an EU head of state in that year. Two years prior to this, there was no Afghanistan heroin in Europe.

The US accused al Qaeda, led by bin Laden, of doing 9/11. The Taliban said “Well, if you can produce proof of this, we will hand him over to stand trial in an international court”. The US would not have a bar of this, quite apart from the fact that they do not recognise international courts, they knew bin Laden was innocent. They knew him well, having trained him. The entire White House, and FBI and CIA hierarchy knew 9/11 was organised and funded by Israel, which is why they released the cheering Israeli witnesses, to be repatriated back to Israel.

    Jump forward to Afghanistan today.

The Taliban of today is no longer a bunch of fundamentalist peasants. It’s leadersdhip is sophisticated and highly organised and politically savvy. it authorises export of heroin providing this only reaches infidels. I imagine this will not change. They will, as they see it, fight fire with fire.

Any researcher worth his salt already knew by 2003 that Osama bin Laden was dead. He passed away from renal failure in a clinic hospice in 2001. To his dying moment, he protested that he had nothing to do with 9/11.

The Taliban leadership has stated they do not know the next move. This all depends upon recognition as the new government of Afghanistan. If Russia, China, and non-aligned nations provide international recognition, my uneducated and igorant prediction is that they will work to become the regional leader.

I also suspect that Erdogan will align accordingly, as will Assad.

Meanwhile, the US will realise that the most likely regional antagonist for Afghanistan will be Iran, which will force them to establish cordial relations with Iran.

This will overturn US Middle East policy, which will create a schism between Israel and the White House. By then, Biden will be either demented beyond control or dead, and the next President will be confronted by a world that bears no resemblance to anything that has come before. So further predicitions are pointless.

But, as I said, I have not done any homework on this, so who knows?

    • All things could be looked at in this way:
Swissy traditionally profits from both sides in any conflict, and devises credit plans for each, Swissy fuels the dispute by appealing to the greedy and power-crazed. We hear plenty about USD hegemony but nothing about CHF hegemony. CHF = Confederation Helvetika Franc. Hevetika = Vatikan = Vatika, some ancient goddess of the underworld with equivalents probably all over Europe and beyond.
So Swissy eggs the CCP on to start the one-belt-road knowing that ANZUS / NATO will have to come up with a response. Suddenly we have cold war 2.0, fitting in exactly on schedule with the scamdemic and climate hysteria. We are supposed to ignore all the single use plastic and deforestation because of CO2, a harmless gas which plants breathe. For this we are all to buy new Tesla cars. How did Telsa shares rocket up to make Elon Musk “the richest in the world”. Maybe Swissy started buying them all, with his printed CHF system. They are getting made in China too, hope the paint doesn’t fall off. Tesla in trouble now, too many fatal crashes because of the computer system.
The 2020 election was rigged through China, funded by UBS (Swissy) refer Mike Lindell’s Cyber Symposium this month.
Who is really running China ?
Instead of talking about banksters in general, and various figureheads of organisations, lets consider quiet Swissy, who was THERE ALL ALONG.

  11. It must be clear by now, that communism has declared war on our human race. Destroying family, social order and tradition, promoting Darwinism, atheism and materialism.
The Creator calls us to love and be kind to others. Communism wants to control all aspects of economic life by eliminating private property, raising taxes and having total monopoly on every thing.
God gave us traditional arts and crafts to pass on His divine image by reinforcing faith, elevating morality and nurturing virtue.
With totalitarian rule, they need to commit mass murder to eliminate resistance, as happened in Soviet states and China.
If you have never lived in a communist country, you have no idea what communism is in practise. This past year should be an awakening of senses.
In communist fantasy, everyone is free and equal.
In reality, power is in hands of a small elite.

  12. US Imperialism Driving Lebanon’s Economic Crisis & the Balkanization of Syria

Around one quarter of the world lives in countries under unilateral United States sanctions. While American government officials insist that sanctions are targeted at officials committing human rights abuses in foreign countries, the United Nations notes that they always “disproportionately affect the poor and most vulnerable.”

In Cuba, U.S. sanctions are causing shortages that led to widespread protests earlier this summer and are slowing the worldwide rollout of Cuba’s domestically produced coronavirus vaccine. U.S. government documents explicitly state that the goal of the blockade of the island is to “decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation and [the] overthrow of [the] government.”

U.S. sanctions on Venezuela, too, have been widely condemned, and are estimated to have caused the deaths of over 100,000 people.

It is in the Middle East, however, where U.S. economic measures have arguably had the most impact. Our guest today has first-hand experience of this. Rania Khalek is a Lebanese-American journalist based in the Middle East. In addition to being a presenter on Breakthrough News, she is co-host of the Unauthorized Disclosure podcast. You may also have seen her work in ??The Grayzone, The Intercept, Truthout, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, Al-Jazeera, The Nation, Salon, AlterNet or Vice.

Today, Khalek speaks about the impact of sanctions across the Middle East and the current political situation in Lebanon, Syria and beyond.

    Fall of Damascus
Putin ( Gog of Magog ) in Syria
    all done.
    Finally, last one:
assassination of Assad ( Syria ) hasn’t happened yet.

Russia needs Syria because they need Turkey in the pincers, and cut off from Zion. The Turks would probably make a deal with anyone so with Russia gone they would split Syria with the Zionists half-half. In a big war the Zionists would get Lebanon, which they want for water security. There is also a mooted pipeline from Qatar but this seems a lesser issue (?).
The US has to choose its battles now because it has too many enemies on the go at once. Cold war with Russia is not profitable so they need to be treated as an equal. Russia wants to control the Black Sea and Afghanistan and the US does not have the resources to waste on such things. USD hegemony is a precious thing and has to be held carefully above the fray. Bashing places like Libya and the rest who get out of line is all they can manage.
