Yom Kippur 2020 and Our “Hopeless” Situation

Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, begins on September 27 this year. It is a high holy day where one fasts and prays. There are two themes – atonement for sins of the past year and hope for better behavior in the coming year. Atonement, per the Merriam Webster Dictionary, can mean reparation for an offense or injury, confession, reconciliation, and making amends.

Shira Telushkin wrote at Forward.com, on September 24, and article wisely entitled: “How Can We Pray When There Is No Hope? Yom Kippur’s 2020 Paradox”. She said:

“Right now, it feels like the best we can hope for is a year where the world does not get even worse, or where the absolute worst-case scenario we might imagine is thwarted. There is so much at stake, and all of it feels so out of our control that to pray in this moment feels about as useful as casting a ballot in New York City. This does not feel like the year in which forgiveness is needed; it feels like a year for justice, for organization, for restitution and change.” [Emphasis added]

Hurrah! We need to organize and to change. Nothing else will get us out of the mess. Collectively, we (for me, the “we” means Americans and Australians) need to atone for many wrong moves made in the period from September 2019 to now.

This would include our lack of support for peoples who are getting bashed in other lands to some extent with our help, such as the Gazans, and the Yemeni. And our lack of anger at the unjust imprisonment of individuals, such as Australian citizen Julian Assange, US citizen Jahar Tsarnaev, and native American Leonard Peltier.

The biggest wrong move was our failure to recognize quickly enough, and resist, the plandemic. It is almost certainly a scheme to globalize the nations’ governments, kill off many people, establish authoritarianism and cruel inter-personal relations, thwart initiative and creativity, reduce us to slaves and idiots, remove any standards from science, and – unbelievably – alter our species’ DNA.

I think that the matter to which Shira Telushkin refers, viz., the near hopelessness of our 2020 situation, has a lot to do with the difficulty of making collective responsibility work. For example, the collectives of both the US and Australia are responsible for the current wrongdoing to Assange. But in the courtroom it doesn’t look like that.

Something about Free Speech

The US’s DoJ is wrongly trying to enforce a law against Assange (in order to suppress the criminality of war criminals). The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs is abdicating its duty to help a citizen overseas (think how it noisily helps Aussies who are caught with drugs in Asia). And for that matter, the UK’s persecution of Assange is worthy of atonement, too.

I am not trying to make a big deal over the fate of one journalist, Julian.  There are thousands of them. I am leading to a point. There is indeed widespread empathy for Assange in US and in Oz, but it does not amount to much in the face of established authority.

That is even more true in the case of the plandemic. Many doctors have gone to bat against the absurd restrictions ordered by government, but people think there is only one final source of truth – government. Granted, a group of doctors, talking about a specifically medical subject, should be easily able to move the public, but the strength of the MSM is sufficient to prevent even that.

Your Camp Or Mine

I now wish to make a separate claim as to the hopelessness of our lives today. Shira Telushkin says we need to organize but there is no sign of it. Rather the opposite is happening. Every US citizen is being pushed into a camp.

Say you are a good, caring Democrat or a good, caring Republican. You won’t be able to use your goodness or your loving care. You feel you have to do your best to defeat “the enemy,” i.e., the other Party. How’s that for a bad mathematical agglomeration of the goodness of individuals?

I attended a Trump rally last week in the beautiful mountains of New Hampshire.  On one side of the street were the Republicans, including Yours Truly, and on the other side were the Bidenites, carrying signs such as “Trump is an embarrassment to the nation”, and shouting invectives such as “Draft dodger!,” and “Lock him up.” One such Democrat actually mooned Trump’s son Donald, Jr, who was on my side of the street.

I might have wanted to try a rapprochement, in the middle of the street, but a motorcyclist (for Trump) was driving up and down using maximum revving to drown out the audibility of the enemy (the “Dememy”).  I have to admit the whole thing was hilarious and in good spirits (and the cops, bomb squad and all, were very tolerant) but it felt like a baseball game rather than a serious matter.

Consider how this attention to “the baseball game” means no attention to anything else. Even the salient matter of how people will survive, soon, when their money runs out, is not addressed in the halls of Washington or Canberra. It is apparently a non-problem. So is starvation – a non-problem. Fancy that!

Another non-problem is the debt that was run up by the CARES Act, of bailing everybody out a few months ago to the tune of $2.5 trillion. (I can recall when the entire US government deficit was $2.5 trillion.) Hats off to one member of the house of Reps – Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who single-handedly forced the Congresspersons to come back to town and vote on an important matter.

I am not referring to HR 246, a meaningless resolution to condemn the BDS movement, on which Massie was the only “R” who voted “No, thank you.” (BDS – boycott, divest, sanctions, as ways of pressuring Israel re Gaza.)

De-Westminsterizing the US Government

Whether you would have been a Yes voter or a No voter on the anti-BDS bill, you have to agree that Massie-ism, if only it would become a trend, would be an answer to our hopelessness. It would upend the Westminster-ization of Congress.

Being a dual citizen of US and Australia. I can say that the Westminster system is lousy and indeed is immoral. When you vote for John Smith, Labor Party, as your local MP, or when you vote for Mary Doe, Liberal Party, as your senator, you are voting for – respectively — the Labor or Liberal Party, not John or Mary.

After the votes are counted (this assumes any votes ever actually get counted!) you may find that Labor has won in both the Lower and Upper House. Thus the Labor leader becomes Prime Minister. Your local parliamentarian is not working for you, not even seriously pretending to work for you. He or she is basically ornamental.

If the PM wants something done (of course I really mean if his bosses up in the Firmament somewhere want something done), he need only pass the word to a relevant Cabinet member (who is necessarily a parliamentarian) to make it happen.  Any recommended bill is guaranteed to pass, in Australia.

But not in America?  Ah, not in America a couple of generations ago.  But around 1980 the top bosses issued an instruction to westminster-ize Congress. Party loyalty is now so predictable, that when Nancy Pelosi (or her boss in the Firmament) wanted the House to impeach Trump, it was guaranteed to come true, as the Donkeys had a majority.

Likewise, it was guaranteed that no convicting of the impeachee would ensue, as the Elephants had a majority in the Senate. The constitutional provision for holding a president to account was thus trashed.

Reportedly, the man who was given the task of westminstering Congress was Lloyd Cutler (1917-2005), a friend of Jimmy Carter in the Trilateral Commission. He sure did a fine job of it. But don’t forget to credit the media.

We Find Ourselves in Great Danger

There is no government there anymore to protect us.  We are on our own. It is hard to persuade people as to what the realty is nowadays – quite a change from how we remember it! Gumshoe’s commenter “56” said recently: “Where lies exist, reality dies.” It’s just lies, lies, lies. You have to go all outdoors to re-establish reality.

I return now to what Shira Telushkin, a young Brooklynite, said in her Forward article. She said “It feels like a year for justice, for organization, for restitution and change.” And she is not the least bit deluded as to how hard that will be.

She refers to the life of King Hezekiah of Judea. The prophet Isaiah came to Hezekiah and told him there was a decree against his life which could not be changed. Hezekiah rejected the finality of that. I quote Shira, who is paraphrasng the Talmud:

“But King Hezekiah, who was totally willing to accept Isaiah’s words when pertaining to the will of God, was not interested in his opinion on the limits of God’s mercy. Instead, he kicked Isaiah out of his home, saying, ‘The tradition I have received from the house of my father’s father is that even if a sharp sword rests upon a person’s neck, he should not cease praying for mercy.’

“In other words, there is always hope.”

Ms Telushkin asks her readers in 2020:

“When was the last time you went out into the world with the conviction that your actions could actually change the world?

“When was the last time you really believed you could avert the harsh decree? …They say that pessimists might more often be right, but only optimists can change the world….

“We need to come to Yom Kippur this year with more faith, however crazy it might seem, in our own power to enact change. There is no other way forward. There is no Yom Kippur without hope.

“The sword is sharp, but the game is not over.”

    • Marilyn, in relation to your comment that ‘GOD chose Trump’ below,
      are you telling me that God bypassed the squeaky clean, religiously pious, unimpeachably honest Ron Paul in the 2012 Presidential race and instead chose the narcissistic, full-of-himself, misogynistic, unscrupulous and immoral bald-faced liar Trump instead ?

    President Trump is loved by the whole world…except for Yankee idiot liberals. And the main stream news is part of that group.

    Think about this…God told us long ago to get married-one man and one woman…and stay married to that person for life…or until death do you part!
    Once you are married then you can be fruitful and multiply….have as many babies as God gives you and love, feed , clothe and help each child learn about God first!

    So this is an awesome year, and next year will be even better!
    If you have not lived your life God’s way…you have just a few hours to get on your knees and ask Jesus to come into your heart, to save your soul and forgive you of every son you have committed. We If you are sincere, he will flood your mind with memories of your ungodly deeds…so you can repent!

      Unfortunately, not so lucky for those countless thousands of businesses that were deemed unnecessary by the Covid Conspirators or unable to remain solvent at partial capacity that have shut down, never to re-open again (many small businesses will lose the family home which they’ve staked as collateral).

      And, many objective economic forecasters are saying that next year will be even more dire – irrespective of the outcome of the U.S Presidential election.

      Judaism excuses abortion through the “rodef” pilpul, that the baby is a rodef, a pursuer, an aggressor, whose life the mother may take.   4. The instructions for services on Yom Kippur are found in Leviticus Chapter 16. When I went to look for them (On BibleGateway), I found the following at Chapter 20:

    20 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing in Israel who sacrifices any of his children to Molek is to be put to death. The members of the community are to stone him. 3 I myself will set my face against him and will cut him off from his people; for by sacrificing his children to Molek, he has defiled my sanctuary and profaned my holy name. 4 If the members of the community close their eyes when that man sacrifices one of his children to Molek and if they fail to put him to death, 5 I myself will set my face against him and his family and will cut them off from their people together with all who follow him in prostituting themselves to Molek.

    The American media reverentially showcase the pious Yom Kippur extravaganza of Pharisaic displays of penitence and purification, fasting and prayer, that allegedly give evidence of the supposed special relationship which Talmudists enjoy with God. Quite a gaudy show is made of the confessional Viduy comprising the Ashamnu and the Al het, the catalogue of sins which is meaningless as a form of self-accusation, since the Judaic recites the whole litany, whether he is actually guilty of each transgression or not.

    After the recitation of each transgression, one is to strike the left side of one’s chest with one’s right fist. This is followed by the prayer of supplication, Avinu malkenu and the Alenu, the so-called “mourner’s kaddish.”

    All of this makes an impressive Yom Kippur Eve accompaniment to the promise-breaking Kol Nidrei and demonstrates that rather than moving them closer to God, these ceremonies move Judaic persons who are adherents of Judaism farther away, by making God into an accomplice to deceit and oath-breaking, surrounded by a hypocritical show of piety and penance.

    The Talmud in Mishnah Hagigah 1:8(a) admits that there is no Biblical basis for the Kol Nidrei rite.

    Rabbi Moses Maimonides confirms that the Kol Nidrei rite is not in any way Biblical: “The absolution from oaths has no basis whatever in the Written Torah” (Mishneh Torah, Sefer Haflaah, Hilkhot Shevuot 6:2).

    The Talmudic law concerning the Kol Nidrei rite is as follows:

    “And he who desires that none of his vows made during the year shall be valid, let him stand at the beginning of the year and declare, ‘Every vow which I make in the future shall be null.”(Babylonian Talmud: Nedarim 23a and 23b).

    Note that the Talmud declares that the action nullifying vows is to be taken at the beginning of the year and with regard to promises made in the future. This distinction is critical since it contradicts what the deceivers claim is a penitential service for begging forgiveness for promises broken in the past, rather than what it is: a nullification made in advance for vows and oaths yet to be made (and deliberately broken with impunity).

    This “advance stipulation” is called bitul tenai and it is the basis for a Judaic being absolved in advance of breaking promises that he will make in the future, or to use the rabbinic lawyer’s jargon: “declaration of intent for the anticipatory invalidation of future vows.”

    This corresponds to the Talmudic lesson that God rewards clever liars (Kallah 51a).

    You have to pity people ensnared in this sordid charade of cajoling God into helping them cheat.

    Little of this harsh reality will surface in the next few days, however. Instead, the corporate media will spout warm and fuzzy shibboleths about Yom Kippur as part of the sly masquerade by which Judaism ascends ever higher over the West, while its adherents sink ever lower in moral turpitude.

    To all those “Christians” who, rather than seeking to rescue the pitiable Judaics who are captive to this system of institutionalized religious dishonesty, instead abandon them to it, we can only say, may God have mercy on you for the hateful part you are playing in cooperating with the Orthodox rabbis in permitting more Judaic souls to be lost to the Father of Lies.

    • Thank you Crisscross. I assume the entire thing is a quote from Michael Hoffman, whose work seems genuine to me.

      I commented that I went looking for the Yom Kippur rites in Leviticus, but I did not say I found them. I found only verse 34: “And this shall be a statute forever for you, that atonement may be made for the people of Israel once in the year because of all their sins.”

      My religion (“Roman” Catholic) also uses some items in the Bible in a very stretched way, e.g., that papal “authority” is based on Jesus saying to Peter “Thou art Peter and upon this rock I shall build my Church.” Good heavens.

      Above, Hoffman notes:
      “Rather than moving them closer to God, these ceremonies move Judaic persons who are adherents of Judaism farther away, by making God into an accomplice to deceit and oath-breaking, surrounded by a hypocritical show of piety and penance.”

      Could we not say that the same happens every time a DoJ person takes an oath in court? I am big on the crime of perjury. We should “make them see stars” if they violate their oath. Might make for a lot less perjury. [200 words]

  9. What Shira Telushkin doesn’t counter in is that better earthly conditions are more likely to result in the bulk of the population remaining in a comotose state than otherwise and that God’s purpose is to maximise Everyman’s wake-up call before it’s too late

          • It’s unclear what that argument has to do with the day of atonement, over and above which it’s significantly problematic

            In the 1st instance it’s self-contradictory by virtue of it’s reliance on an account that proves, beyond any question of doubt, that human righteousness is NOT a genetically inherited trait:

            The 2nd major hiccup is that, the introduction of foreign blood into Judah, as in Canaanite(Tamar, Rahab) Edomite(Ruth) and Hittite(Bathsheba) was, in fact pivotal to said tribe’s redemption, hence the inclusion of said women in the genealogy of our Lord, as set out in the 1st chapter of MATHEW

            Jesus Christ was the last member of the tribe of Judah whose lineage was unblemished. He was also the ‘son of David’ in the flesh.

            …………The key is to understand the difference between Judah and Israel. Judah was a nation of two tribes, while Israel included the ten tribes that were supposedly lost in Assyria. Jeremiah prophesied the destruction of Judah and Jerusalem through the metaphor of the old earthen jar that was to be broken in the valley of the son of Hinnom (Jeremiah 19:1, 2, 3, 10, 11, 12). On the other hand, the house of Israel was compared to wet clay which, after being beaten down and destroyed as a nation, was to be remade into a new vessel (Jeremiah 18:3, 4, 6).

            By understanding the difference in calling between Israel and Judah, we can see that there is no contradiction between Jesus’ curse on Judah and the blessing upon Israel that we find in Isaiah 27:6, which says,

            6 In the days to come, Jacob will take root, Israel will blossom and sprout; and they will fill the face of the world with fruit.

  13. The way I understand things, Jewish religion is meant for Jewish people’s, thus does not apply to any other religion. It means they are not required to treat other religions as their own.     The 2013 edition of Pandemic includes two new characters—the Contingency Planner and the Quarantine Specialist—not available in earlier editions of the game.
