Australia Risks Stumbling Into a Much Greater War

One has to wonder what substitute Australia’s defence planners, up to and including the Minister for defence, are using as a replacement for their brains. It is a serious question and it is raised following the decision by the Australian government to commit weapons to the war currently being waged between Russia and Ukraine. Initially, that war was limited to small-scale fighting in the area known as the Donbass. This is an area peopled by largely Russian-speaking citizens who have been fighting Ukraine military forces for the past eight years.

Those of you who have bothered to follow this ongoing saga will know that in 2008, following the American organised coup d’état that replaced the legitimately elected Ukrainian government with a frankly fascist regime, a treaty was signed between the Ukrainian government and the leaders of the two Donbass regions. France and Germany were also parties to that agreement.

In fact, the Ukrainians never complied with the terms of the agreement, which provided for a considerable degree of autonomy for the Donbass region. A former Ukrainian leader has recently admitted that the Ukrainian government had no intention of complying with the terms of the agreement. Rather, they treated it as an opportunity to build up their forces so they could eventually take over the Donbass by force.

These plans were put into effect in February of this year and they would probably have succeeded were it not for the intervention by Russian troops in the same month. That history, which is essential to understanding what has happened in the Donbass, is completely ignored by the Western media which focuses on the Russian invasion as if it was separate from the events of the preceding eight years.

Now, the western media has denied the legitimacy of the vote that recently took place in the Donbass in which the overwhelming majority of the population (>90%) voted to leave Ukraine and apply to join the Russian Federation. There has been completely unfounded criticism of the voting procedure, which was conducted over four days and under constant threat from Ukrainian shelling.

That shelling is another feature that manages to avoid any mention in the western media. In fact, Ukraine has been constantly shelling cities in the Donbass who had the temerity not to accept rule from Kiev.  That element of the war has so far cost more than 16,000 lives of the civilian population, although again one would struggle to find any acknowledgment of that fact in the western media.

The Russians have recently increased the size of their military commitment to the war, and also appointed a new General to take charge of the Russian forces. He has a reputation of being a strong leader, and previously commanded Russian forces in the war in Syria. Like most unpleasant facts of United States’ behaviour, their continued illegal presence in Syria and ongoing theft of Syrian oil never rates a mention in our lame media.

The Australian political class and its lame media are totally silent of this ongoing theft of Syrian resources, as they are similarly silent about Australia’s ongoing and illegal occupation of Iraqi territory. Australia has flatly refused to comply with a demand by the Iraqi government that all foreign troops should vacate their territory. Again, this blatant defiance of international law is met with complete silence by the Australian mainstream media.

They are similarly silent on the implications of Australia’s involvement itself in the war in Ukraine. It needs to be pointed out to the government that supplying arms and ammunition to a party waging war makes one an accomplice to that party. Russia would be perfectly entitled to treat Australia on the same footing as their principal foe in Ukraine.

In other words, Australia would be a legitimate target of Russian rockets because it has made itself a party to that war. It is highly unlikely that either our political leaders or their advisors have turned their minds to the issue that this raises. Australians seem to think that it enjoys some sort of immunity from retaliation for its blatant interference in the war. Perhaps it thinks that the Americans will provide the requisite cover to avoid the consequences of this involvement in the Ukraine war.

If this is indeed their thinking, then it is sadly out of date. For the United States to involve itself in a conflict between Russia and itself would invite retaliation upon the United States, the likes of which is completely outside their experience. The blunt fact is that Russia’s missile system is vastly superior to any United States equivalent. One should not underestimate the psychological effect of any attack upon the United States. The last time that happened was in 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The effect on the United States psyche was profound, but it was nothing to what it would be if, for example, New York or Washington were obliterated.

This is not to suggest that the Russians are planning an attack any time soon, but it is important to bear in mind it is always a possibility. The United States’ blatant involvement in the Ukraine war, which they have recently upgraded with their unprecedented attack on both Nord Stream I and II and on the Crimea Bridge will not be allowed to pass without retaliation. Precisely what form that retaliation will take remains to be seen, but the United States is deluding itself if it thinks that such blatant attacks on critical infrastructure will remain answered.

In all of which Australia remains blissfully unaware of the dangers its involvement in the Ukraine war poses. It is probably too much to hope that there will be a realisation of the very real risks posed by its present blind compliance to the United States poses.

  1. Apparently being a U.S. poodle doesn’t translate too well in the real world. I see the exchange rate of Australian dollars to U.S. dollars is continuing to slide. At 1.6 Aussie dollars to 1 U.S. dollar that will be a 60% bonus when the gold manipulation ends. A 2,000 US$ price of gold ends up at A$3,200 per ounce, and at US$5,000 it is A$8,000.

    Of course, the value of all fiat currencies always returns to its intrinsic value, which is ZERO. I wonder if the South Pacific Peso will reach zero ahead of the U.S. dollar.

    • When I bought my little plot of land it was seriously degraded by the former occupants. However, I could see the potential that was there. After more than a decade the place is thriving. I still have lots of work to do, but at this point I could kick back and the place would still keep cranking out lots of produce.
