Can Perpetrators Feel Shame? The Wisdom of Anneke Lucas

This website, GumshoeNews.com, has a continuing sympathy with abused children, and sense of anger about their predicament, especially in Australia.  I rarely mention my sympathy with the abusers, the “perps.” After all, they have done horrific things to innocent kids.

But Professor Freda Briggs said that 80% of the perps were abused as kids. We naturally want the perp, once confronted, to offer an apology. But maybe they are psychologically blocked from apologizing or acknowledging their wrong-doing.  I think they deserve new consideration.

Anneke Lucas, a survivor of sex slavery, has come up with a very important interpretation of this matter, based on the power of shame. She writes, at her website annekelucas.com:

“For most perpetrators, the shame that would be appropriate to feel, for the harm they have caused, is enmeshed with shame once unfairly imposed on them, when they were mistreated or abused.  The threat of feeling shame, or any implication they should be ashamed, would trigger the original, humiliating feeling from a time they themselves were victimized … leaving them with the horrendous feelings of being deserving of the abuse, or being unworthy of better treatment — of being bad….

“Shame is the currency of abuse in our culture. The inability to differentiate between toxic, imposed shame, and natural shame of which the purpose is to correct behavior, is the reason that child abuse victims sometimes pass on their abuse and become perpetrators, rejecting shame altogether, becoming shameless.”

  1. Everyone has a choice in this life as to who they want to be no matter what trauma they have suffered as a child. We are all responsible for our choices. We are all answerable for those choices. We all experience the consequences of our choices. There is no forgiveness for those who inflict abuse on children.

    • The idea of reduced responsibly as an adult due to (shame) the trauma of childhood abuse reinforces the pedophile agenda. Whether predators feel shame is inconsequential.

      • Berry, I went to your link. It’s fairly typical of the hatchet jobs done on survivors. I think she’s dinki di. Anyway a further link from your link brought me to this quote from Anneke that reflects my own recent philosophy:

  3. I support Gareth’s post (disregarding the irritating religious addendum).

    Having worked in Child Protection / family welfare for a ten high stress years, I learned that, regardless of other considerations, paedophiles cannot be cured. The damage done to them as children is indelible. In fact, evidence suggests the compulsions grow stronger as they age.

    Would people please stop trying to reinvent the wheel. By locking up or otherwise eliminating paedophiles we protect children and end the cycle.

    Younger paedophiles experience ambiguous responses to their own behaviour and some shrink from actual activity; ergo… this is only a factor in paedophiles who never offend, which makes sympathy a moot point.

    We need to recognise the sources of paedophilia: boarding schools for young children, orphanages, foster parenting, and the laziness of parents who leave their kids with unaccompanied adults. These conditions are becoming more prevelant, not less.

    • Tony thanks for speaking out, “(disregarding the irritating religious addendum)” the addendum speaks to the direct issue of shame induced action or inaction: if you don’t have control of your behaviour and are a predator of children then it is better to top yourself then harm one child.
      The deafening silence is why I left child protection, apart from the corruption. It takes a community a society, to speak out to protect children. I have found our whole society lacking.

      Only suggesting that you may consider answering the question to yourself as the answer itself may be a helpful revelation.

  7. Thank you all. I see i botched the article by mentioning my sympathy for (abused) perps. My feelings are irrelevant (and they don’t lead to letting perps off the hook. Anyway, in Oz, perps aren’t on the hook in the first place.)

    I wanted to call attention to Lucas’s stunning insight. She explains it better in her essay “Beat Kick Slap,” above. I’ll try again with a more generalized article at Gumshoe on “the suppression of guilt.”

    • Well the last two minutes are pretty good too, and gives people some background about how the official human trafficking, drug and contraband smuggling route was established, from Latin America through Jeb’s Florida to Arkansaw distribution centre (airport in forest).
      Now in your interview they are talking about the Great Awakening which is a 100th monkey type of 3-word slogan that has popped up lately. The problem is the kids are starting to look around for a new paradigm but it is all controlled by BigTech so they are being fed the Rockerfellas Foundation version of the Great Awakening which is basically totalitarian fascism in socialist drag.
      This morning I tried to circulate a couple of videos from banned dot video and bright(xxx)eon dot com and I could not even get them to show on the phone browser they were so censored.
      The young people therefore are being totally controlled through the smartphone.
      The phone will be too smart for most of them.
      While their parents are stuck in traffic, their grandparents locked up, they get indoctrinated into the “curriculum” by hand-to-mouth socialist schoolteachers who thrive on holidays.
      Most people after all this must have all the reasoning power of a battery chicken, you would think. But who knows, there still appears to be room for hope this year.

        I would take it further, though. If sexual activity is hedonistically regarded as a pleasurable recreational thing then the whole nature and purpose of human life is degraded to a self-centred striving for self satisfaction in which any culturally inherited regard for the intrinsic value of others is whittled away and diminished.

        Some take it further and quicker than others but, overall, it’s a slide into the moral decadence that be-gets cultural collapse and its attendant horrors.

        Ultimately, as you have implied, if it is assumed that there is no transcendental purpose (proper, intended, end) for the existence of every individual human then any vulnerable are expendable in a clamour for personal advantage or pleasure.

        We could go further into the futility of appealing to words on paper (Constitutions, agreements etc.) as if they had some mystical “power” to thwart the natural results of moral degeneracy… but! ah, well, that might be a bit narcissistic. Eh?

    It is undeniable that all Pedophiles are Narcissists, for to partake in something as henious as child abuse is just not normal.

    Most Pedophiles hold some position of authority and trust, they hide their indiscretions within that trust, who would believe a pillar of society would do such a crime.
