Invitation to Stop Averting Your Eyes from Gaza

It can make you feel like you’re going mad. How phony and superficial it all is. How we’re a year and a half into history’s first live-streamed genocide and our whole society is acting like everything’s peachy.

We’re murdering kids. We’re starving them. We’re dropping high tech military explosives on them. Blowing their limbs off. Ripping their guts out. Shooting them in the head. This isn’t just being done by “Israel”. It’s being done by the entire western empire which backs these atrocities.

And yet if you turn on a TV you’ll see famous people laughing and joking about nonsense, expressing political opinions of no more depth and significance than whether or not there should have been a female Ghostbusters movie. Go read the news and it’s dominated by empty fluff about celebrities and politicians and the latest brain fart to come out of Donald Trump’s mouth. Go to a party and everyone’s nattering about vapid gibberish, yelling “No politics!” if you try to say anything about the holocaust-shaped elephant in the room.

Newer readers might not know this, but I used to have a lot more fun on my platform. Lots of humor. Psychedelic poetry. Spirituality and philosophy. But ever since the Gaza holocaust began, that kind of writing has often felt like it would be irreverent and frivolous. Almost sacrilegious. I would feel like I’m joining in with the madness of mainstream culture by turning my back on all those emaciated bodies and mutilated children.

So for the last year and a half I’ve mostly just been doing what I feel everyone on earth ought to be doing: pointing to the genocide and saying it needs to stop.

I used to be a lot more poetical and creative in my ways of pointing to the criminality of the empire, because its depravity was often difficult for people to really grasp, so I was always seeking out new ways to help people see its monstrosity with fresh eyes. Now that they’re just butchering children right in front of us, that’s not really what’s called for anymore. What’s called for is to keep drawing everyone’s attention to the terrible thing that’s staring us all right in the face.

This task shouldn’t be falling to university activists and obscure antiwar bloggers. Every news outlet in the world should be making this their entire focus.

If we had a sane and ethical news media, this is what they would be doing. All the leading stories every single day would be about the latest evil thing Israel and its western backers have done in Gaza, clearly stating in every headline our own government’s role in making this possible. Every press conference would be completely dominated with questions asking every western official why we are participating in an active genocide and demanding answers about when it is going to stop.

Instead we get “Palestinians perish in explosion” passive-language headlines, usually coupled with “…says Hamas-run health ministry” in order to let readers disbelieve the entire story. And that’s on those rare occasions that Israel’s atrocities get reported on at all; normally Gaza is seen as a third or fourth-tier issue of far less importance than some infinitely less egregious grievance in our own country. Palestinian lives are given vastly less weight than western lives, with our own feelings and comforts emphasized far more heavily than the issue of the Palestinian people living or dying.

And it can just make you feel like you’re going crazy. It’s like if we were all going around physically drenched in human blood, with blood flooding our living rooms and severed limbs strewn about our bedrooms and kitchens — but nobody was talking about it. You try to say “What’s up with all this blood and gore?” and they shush you and tell you it’s impolite to talk about politics. A dark red deluge pours out of your minivan door when you open it to pick up your kid from soccer practice, and everyone looks away.

      1. I’m not keeping up on events much in Israel but I do understand there is a faction there that worships the devil — knowingly or unknowingly — and them would be the folks I am weary of .

Who has the power to stand up to it ?             Anyone with a lick of sense knows the only way to peace in Israel is to let them fight it out and winner take all , which is what’s happening .

            Many seem to conveniently forget all the missiles launched Israel’s way and the suicide bombers etc. and the way of life they have had to endure for far too long .

            Their patience and good will towards their wanna be destroyers has apparently reached its limits .

            I will let the better informed determine whether tomorrow’s terrorists are being eliminated today or if we are indeed witnessing the slaughter of innocents , and undoubtedly cold cash is a contributing factor also .

            God is clearly doing a great shaking of this planet and it’s a fascinating thing to see .

      1. Well Elspeth, I just replied in the comments for the last article when you alleged that I try to shut matters /people down.
        As I concluded; ‘you are heaps of fun”. I do not think we will be let down on this topic.
        BTW, it would be helpful when citing the ‘bible’ passages, would you mind clarifying any citations as from the old or New Testament. Some riff raff🤪 would not even know that there are two parts.
        Then we have the Tora and …. (Forgotten🙀- Talmud?) versions with some varying attitudes like it is ok to do some things against you …. As a gentile, if you are not a Jew, etc. and some were chosen by God above the rest of humanity.
        Then other groupings have similar provisions and in India there are class based prejudices I have heard.

        1. Ned, despite our apparent differences I have to acknowledge that there are a few points of agreement between us on this subject.
          One is that there really is an old and a new Testament, and for good reason. Not ( I think) because space aliens had anything to do with the old, but because every promise and prediction of the old is fulfilled in Christ. Jesus taught time and time again that His kingdom is not of this world, and beyond this world the “promised land” continues to be a reality.
          I remember that in past comments you indicated that you are familiar with the mischief that went on behind the Schofield Study Bible. His many Zionistic enterpretations were all based on the work of one man, John Nelson Darby. Darby was a Satan worshiping member of the East India company.
          I wonder how many Christian Zionists know that they have one of the newest religions in the world?
          Regarding off planet beings, I wonder how many people consider the “possibility” of life on other vibrational levels than that of human and animal flesh? I am sure that they all find us very silly, and for that reason I happily embrace my true identity as a village Idiot.             The same passage also confirms that honoring an Old Testament decree will be central to said advent.

            If there is disdain of the OT among commenters here it is not mine.
            Just had a read of the chapter so consider my first reply a knee-jerk reaction. Zecheriah is instructing the Israelites concerning the soon to come Babylonian captivity. Severe judgement also came upon the captors afterwards as you know, and there were indeed conversions among them. Remember the story of King Nebuchadnezzar? Confirmation of this timing is in the many references to the second temple both in the same chapter and in the chapters ahead. God is not a friend of any third temple.
            So in this case, King, Lord of Hosts =God the Father.

            You don’t agree with me I know, but If you feel the need to draw it further can I suggest waiting until the other commenters have finished having their go. Not everyone is like us, and Ned may well not be the only person who has negative feelings about our debates.

            I think the real reason that some people do not like our debates is because they prefer to believe you- regarding both Testaments.
            If the Bible was to become the rational behind depriving people of their rights, stealing all they have, and calling their babies “future terrorists” what better reason would there be for rejecting it as a whole? People who become separated from their creator begin to feel comfortable that way. God is bound by His sinless nature to be a just judge, but He is also a Father. His desire is pour out loving kindness and abundant blessings on people of all nations. The Bible contains a History of His dealings with man, but it also contains the gospel of Christ, through whom all those lost souls can be redeemed to their salvation. Jesus Christ has nothing to do with your hostility to the Palestinians, or any other people who have the misfortune to be living in so called “Greater Israel”. You present a lot of mean spirited stuff here, and it is a stumbling block to many souls.

            If, as you insist, every Old Testament prediction had been fulfilled as of 33 A.D. said Word would have been void.

            Here’s another, very obviously unfulfilled one that complements Zech 14:

            In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains;

  8. If our world had no such thing as any religion, what excuse would mankind find for creating wars with which to make money? An old saying is, religion is the root of all evil. I believe a very true saying.

    It is amazing that no matter what the subject is being debated there always seems to be some bigot bringing up religion.

    I have yet to see any proof of a need for ANY religion. All the stories are handed down by word of mouth from mostly uneducated tribal witch doctors. ( uneducated in our sense of education) Most people when religions started to appear could neither read nor write or even chisel into stone. No sense of basic science springs up in both Testaments of the Holy Bible. The answer given to such a statement is ” it was given or created by God “, “there is no reason to know or question why”. Or that statement is only a parable to explain such and such.

    If there be a God or comparable being, why have all the massive crimes like which are happening now to the Palestinians by the Israelis allowed to happen to “God’s people”. After all, is he not able to create miracles? Such as PEACE between people of differing views.

I do not defend Islam, but recognize that like other things, names can be stolen. The name “Jesus” does not belong to your third temple messiah either.           5. The following passage is just one of many that pinpoints the folly of railroading prophecy:

            According to preterist logic the use of the present tense in said passage can only mean that:

            a) The nativity took place in 739 BC or thereabouts

            or

            b) The passage is about some other un-named,anomalous inconsequential Jew king or other, hence the reference to the THRONE OF DAVID

            Which one is it?

          6. You are critical of interpretations from outside of your Darby/Schofield tradition, yet you present here as one who has not looked beyond. I have never claimed that the OT is not all about Christ, I very much think the opposite. My objection has been about recycling the prophesies about the BC restoration of Israel into the future, and attributing them to a people to whom they don’t belong. You already know what I think the “Israel of God” is, and who I think is the Temple of God.
