The Conflict in Ukraine Reveals Some Uncomfortable Truths About Australia’s Foreign Policy

The Australian government has announced that it is sending ammunition and other war supplies to the Ukrainian government currently involved in a war with Russia. The news received very little coverage in the Australian media, and to the best of my knowledge no adverse comment. The Australian Labor Party, apparently as part of its policy to provide zero ammunition to the government on all foreign policy issues, was silent.

That Australia should want to involve itself in a war 12,000 km away from its borders, probably says more about its shameful acquiescence to United States wishes than it does about Australian foreign policy. To even refer to it as “Australian foreign policy” is a misnomer as anything approaching independence in that sphere disappeared decades ago.  It can probably be traced back to the role of then governor-general John Kerr, and his compliance with the United States in engineering the dismissal of the Whitlam Labor government in 1975. Ever since then the terms “independent” and “foreign policy” insofar as it relates to the Australian government is a phrase never added together in the same sentence.

Completely missing from the fervidly pro-United States view of the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine is the least sense of truth about the origins of the conflict. A little history is in order. In 2014 an American-inspired and organised coup took place in Ukraine. The organiser in chief was Victoria Nuland, who like the proverbial bad penny keeps recurring in Geo-political space. In her current role as Deputy Secretary of State she is still reappearing, like the proverbial bad penny, and casting her baleful influence over Ukraine.

The regions of Crimea and the two Donbass States decided they wanted nothing to do with this anti-Russia Ukrainian government and declared their independence. Crimea voted overwhelmingly to re-join Russia, from whom it had been “gifted” in 1954 by then Soviet leader Khrushchev. The Ukrainian government did not accept the break-off of the three regions. Since then, they have waged war against the Donbass, killing at least 15,000 citizens, and forcing 1 million into exile, mostly into Russia.

The February 2022 entry into the war of Russia was designed to thwart a Ukrainian invasion of the Donbass. The Russians have effectively entrapped the Ukrainian force in the Donbass, and have captured a significant part of Ukrainian territory, the largest Russian-speaking part of the country who had been systematically ill-treated by the Ukrainian government since 2014, including the forbidding of the use of their own language. Almost none of this real history appears in the Western media.

What readers of the Western media also are not told is that the vast bulk of the world’s population refuses to condemn Russia for its actions. There has been a recent meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Conference. The 57 member states of that organisation refused to endorse sanctions against Russia because of the invasion. Instead of condemnation, the conference counselled a cessation of hostilities, avoidance of the loss of life, the enhancement of humanitarian assistance, and a surge in diplomacy. This view is almost identical to the stands taken by both China and India.

It was not just the Islamic community that refused to condemn the Russian action. Not a single country in West Asia, or in Central, South and southeast Asia have imposed sanctions against Russia because of the invasion. In that stand they were joined by every country in Africa and most of Latin America.

Four West Asian nations, Qatar, Iran, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates sent their foreign ministers to Moscow last week. Iran’s closeness to the Moscow government is well known. The stance of Turkey, which is a NATO member, was more of a surprise. The Turks have refused to condemn Moscow’s actions, joining with their West Asian neighbours in pushing for a peaceful end to the conflict.

This places the Australian government in an even more isolated position. Australia’s trade with Russia amounts to only a few hundred million dollars, but it’s trade with India, China and the rest of Asia is huge. It seems that yet again Australia is placing its relationship with the United States as being of greater importance than in maintaining good relations with its Asian neighbours who are responsible for buying the bulk of Australia’s exports. The Prime Minister Scott Morrison went even further this past week, suggesting that Russia should not be invited to this year’s G 20 meeting, scheduled for later this year in Jakarta.

There is no mechanism by which a G 20 nation could be uninvited. Morrison’s comments are typical of his grandstanding. It raises uncomfortable memories of the incredibly boorish behaviour of then Prime Minister Tony Abbott to President Putin when Australia was the host nation for the G 20 meeting in 2014. It may give the Australian political leadership a measure of support among its supporters. To the bulk of the world, it simply reinforces the image of Australia as a lackie of the Americans.

The war in Ukraine will probably be over in about one month’s time. The splitting of the country cannot be discounted, not just the Donbass, but in other parts of the country that have at various times been part of the Hungarian and Polish empires. Whether the Russian campaign will succeed in ridding the country of its frankly Nazi leadership is a moot point. The CIA has spent time and money aiding and abetting that faction. Morrison’s explicit support for a Nazi government needs to be exposed for what it is. It does not reflect well on this country to be identified with a thoroughly nasty regime that has only itself to blame for its current predicament.

    I had seen most of the material (many short videos) but not the critical one of Putin condemning the globalists’ policy of depopulation.

      • This treaty has NEVER been signed by the parties alleged to be part of it. In FACT this very same treaty, is the instigator of the division caused between President Nixon and Gough Whitlam, (Australian Prime Minister) who became aware that said treaty was NOT signed by the Americans. He requested Nixon fulfil the agreement and sign it, unfortunately Nixon refused. Thus without his signature upon that document, the whole thing is meaningless and has no validity at all. SURPRISE, SURPRISE, and the average Aussie wouldn’t have a clue to any of this. This event was the catalyst that created the enmity between Nixon and Gough, who then proceeded to visit U.S. bases in Australia, where he was refused entry, obstentialy because he did not have PERMISSION from the White House.
