Such is the first verse of the anti-war song by Australian composer Eric Bogle (b 1944 in Peebles, Scotland). The song is now in its 50th year — Bogle wrote it after watching the ANZAC Day parade in Canberra in 1971.  The words are deeply touching to any Australian, as they memorialize the death of more that 8,000 Aussie Diggers (and 2,700 New Zealanders) at Gallipoli in 1915. This is “celebrated” annually on April 25th – ANZAC Day.

What has this to do with “the Desperados” of this series of articles?  I give the appellation “Desperados” whoever is at the highest level of decision-making.  In this case it was Britain’s secret group known as the Roundtable.  The object of WWI – then called “the Great War” was to dislodge Germany from competing with the UK as an empire-builder.

Note: Germany had colonies in parts of the African countries of Burundi, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Namibia, Niger Rwanda, Tanzania, and Togo. Also, Germany held some Pacific Islands, including New Guinea and Micronesia. The peace treaty that ended WWI in 1919 deprived Germany of all such holdings.

The name of Eric Bogle’s song is “And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda.” That’s meant to be sarcastic – the Powers That Be treated the soldier’s effort – as they still do – as some sort of sentimental loyalty to “God, king and country.” But, as we shall see, that was not the case in WWI, and perhaps never is.

The book Hidden History came out in 2016, breaking new ground as to the origins of WWI. The Scottish authors are GERRY DOCHERTY, born in 1948, a secondary school teacher by profession and JIM MACGREGOR born in 1947, a medical doctor since 1978, who left practice in 2001 to devote his energies full-time to researching “the political failures in averting war.”

I will quote from them (as “GD & JM”), in their article “Gallipoli: The Untold Story,” published at New Dawn magazine. I have abbreviated but otherwise not altered their text. First, they tell us that the purpose of the Gallipoli battle was defeat.  They say: “Britain and France planned to carve up the oil rich Ottoman Empire. To that end, the Turks had to be pushed into the German camp.”

(Note: a big loser in the peace treaty of 1919 was the entire Ottoman Empire. It got split up. The French were granted Southeast Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon. The Russians got Istanbul and Armenia. Palestine, in 1920, and Iraq, in 1921, became designated as British mandates.)

As the ship pulled away from the quay
And amidst all the cheers, the flag-waving and tears
We sailed off for Gallipoli.

GD & JM:  “The [Gallipoli]campaign was conceived in London as a grotesque, Machiavellian strategy to fool the Russians into believing that Britain was attempting to capture Constantinople [Ottoman’s center] for them. The paradox of its failure lay in its success. Gallipoli was purposefully designed to fail.

“A secret cabal of immensely rich and powerful men – the Secret Elite – was formed in England in 1891 …. They planned a European war to destroy Germany and, to that end, drew France and then Russia into an alliance termed the Entente Cordiale.

“The Turks generally disliked the Germans and their growing influence,  and made three separate attempts to ally with Britain. They were rebuffed on each occasion. They also pleaded in vain with the French to accept them as an ally, and protect them against their old enemy, Russia. Poor fools.  The Turks [must] be pushed into the German camp and defeated.

“In July 1914 the majority of the Turkish cabinet was still well disposed towards Britain, but their faith was shattered by the seizure of two battleships being built for them in England. As an essay in provocation, it was breathtaking. “If Britain wanted deliberately to incense the Turks and drive them into the Kaiser’s arms she could not have chosen more effective means.”

And how well I remember that terrible day
How our blood stained the sand and the water
And of how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter.

“Britain kept Russia on board and helped drive Turkey into the German camp (they signed a treaty on 2 August, but it created a major problem. How to prevent the Russian fleet from seizing Constantinople? Two German warships provided the answer. On 4 August, while off the coast of Algeria, the cruisers Goeben and Breslau received orders to head for Constantinople.

“Vastly outnumbered (73 to 2) by French and British warships, the escape of the German cruisers to Constantinople, 1,200 miles away, is described as a “fiasco of tragic errors” by “fumbling” British Admirals…. Intelligence in London had intercepted Berlin’s instructions to the Goeben: “Alliance concluded with Turkey. Goeben and Breslau proceed to Constantinople.”

“The British Admiralty knew this, but Goeben and Breslau were allowed to escape in order to neutralise the Russian Black Sea fleet. Russia’s Foreign Secretary Sazonov was outraged that the Royal Navy had failed to prevent it.  The Ottoman Ambassador in Berlin summed it up: ‘the British navy, having enabled the German ships to take cover, has, with the Machiavellianism characteristic of the Foreign Office, foiled any possibility of action by the Russian Black Sea Fleet.’

“Infuriated, Tsar Nicholas insisted on war with Turkey and the seizure of Constantinople for Russia. British and French fears that he would make peace with Germany gave the Tsar overwhelming diplomatic leverage, and it was agreed that Turkey must now be brought into the war.

“In London, fear of Russia signing a peace treaty with Germany loomed large. How was Russia to be kept in the war with the promise of Constantinople, without actually allowing it? The solution, an attack on Gallipoli, was fraught with pitfalls. The Tsar had to be tricked into believing Britain was generously responding in his hour of need by mounting an all-out effort to take Constantinople for Russia.”

And in five minutes flat, he’d blown us all to hell
Nearly blew us right back to Australia.

GD & JM: The Gallipoli campaign supposedly arose from an urgent call for help from the Russian commander-in-chief Grand Duke Nikolay Nikolaevich on 31 December. Would Britain create a diversion to relieve pressure on Russian troops fighting in the Caucasus? This widely held view is wrong. The suggestion came not from Nikolaevich, but from the British military attaché at Petrograd, Sir John Hanbury-Williams who was intimately linked to the Secret Elite and their leader Lord Alfred Milner. … Next day this was presented to the British War Council and magically transformed into a desperate plea for help from Russia.

“The Secretary of the Committee for Imperial Defence, Maurice Hankey, proposed a solution that met all requirements, and it is no coincidence that Hankey was himself a member of the Secret Elite. The Gallipoli campaign would be mounted as a sop to the Russians, but set up to fail.

“Days later the military dynamic changed. … on 20 January Britain informed Russia that she would undertake not just a demonstration, but a complete operation to penetrate the Dardanelles and Gallipoli. The Russians desperately wanted to take part, but were told to concentrate all efforts against Germany on the Eastern Front. The Secret Elite moved into top gear.

“Churchill assumed command and chose men for their ineptitude rather than ability. He turned to Vice-Admiral Sackville Carden, recently appointed commander of the Mediterranean Squadron after years … Slow and ineffective, Carden was tasked with drawing up a plan for a naval attack … On 15 January Carden was informed that his plan had been accepted and that he would be in command…. The reluctant Carden was given no option other than to get on with it, and was effectively set up to take the blame when it failed. For fail it must.

“Rear-Admiral Arthur Limpus, an eminently more experienced and knowledgeable man who had spent years in Turkey advising on all naval matters, was overlooked. Here was the man “who knew the Turks and the Dardanelles intimately,” yet Churchill shunned him because “the Turks might be offended” and it would be “unfair and unduly provocative” to place in command a man with an inside knowledge of the Turkish fleet.  Yet we are asked to believe that Limpus wasn’t given command because it was considered ungentlemanly – “not quite cricket.”  Outrageous stupidity or cold calculation?

“Limpus was opposed to Churchill’s plan, stressing that the first stage must be an amphibious landing, not a naval attack…. Rear-Admiral Carden was ignorant of the fact that any chance of success at Gallipoli was absolutely dependent on a combined naval and military operation. Without long, detailed joint planning, and a sufficient number of troops, it was impossible. Lord Kitchener, the British Secretary of State for War, refused to make troops available and Carden was ordered to proceed with a naval attack.

GD & JM: “The Russians were turning the screw. On 14 February, [Russia’s minister] Sazonov stated that the time for moderation had passed. Tsar Nicholas agreed, informing the French ambassador that his people were making terrible sacrifices in the war without reward. Constantinople must be incorporated into his empire…. The navy’s objective was to ‘bombard and take the Gallipoli peninsula with Constantinople as the objective.’ After the disastrous failure the Dardanelles Commission asked, ‘How can a fleet take a peninsula? And how could it have Constantinople as its objective?’ It was all absurd.

“Naval bombardment of the outer forts of the Dardanelles began on 19 February and ran for six days. It caused some damage but destroyed all hope of surprise and merely led the Turks to strengthen their defences.   The main naval attack took place on 18 March. On the previous day Vice-Admiral De Robek had to take charge when Carden suffered a nervous breakdown. He was never fitted for the task and felt completely undermined by the Admiralty’s refusal to provide custom-built minesweepers….

“Eight powerful destroyers, which could have been fitted with sweeps, remained idle that fateful day while the officers sat playing cards…. A fleet of 16 British and French battleships bombarded the coast. The Bouvet sank within two minutes with over 600 men trapped inside. It was the disaster predicted as far back as 1906.

Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head
And when I woke up in me hospital bed
And saw what it had done, well I wished I was dead
Never knew there was worse things than dyin’.

GD & JM:  “Summoned by Kitchener on 12 March, Hamilton was brusquely informed, “We are sending a military force to support the fleet now at the Dardanelles and you are to have command.” Hamilton was stunned, later admitting, “My knowledge of the Dardanelles was nil, of the Turk nil, of the strength of my own forces next to nil.” When asked if a squadron of modern aircraft with experienced pilots and observers could be made available, Kitchener testily replied, “Not one.” No attempt was made to co-ordinate intelligence about the defences at Gallipoli, not even at strategic level. Hamilton was given a cursory briefing, two small tourist guidebooks and old, inaccurate maps.

“As revealed in our book Hidden History: The Secret Origins of the First World War, masses of crucial documents relating to the First World War were shredded or burned, or have been kept hidden away to this very day in a high security establishment at Hanslope Park in England. The individuals responsible for the war, responsible for Gallipoli, were many things, but they weren’t so stupid as to leave incriminating evidence lying around. Historians in Australia and New Zealand must stop protecting their comfortable careers and start acknowledging the terrible truth about Gallipoli. Peddling mythology as truth is an insult to the memory of those brave young men….

“Don’t be fooled. Those young men died for the imperial dreams of wealthy manipulators, not for ‘freedom’ or ‘civilisation’. They died deceived, expendable, and in the eyes of the power-brokers, the detritus of strategic necessity. Remember that.”

  2. So “the great” Winston Churchill has war crimes against his name in both World Wars. The slimey cigar smoking, alcoholic, (and I believe a paedophile) became a hero to many thousands of dumbed down English men and women.

    A more despicable being is hard to imagine.

      • It’s true to say the reason for ww1 was for the British Empire to throttle the German Empire (founded by Bismarck 1871), the rest is obfuscation. The single biggest issue of the time was the Germans’ intention to run a train line through Serbia to get to the oilfields beyond Turkey, which Britain thought it owned by virtue of the Suez Canal (1869). It’s interesting to note that Napoleon had learned of the prehistoric Suez Canal before the S.C.co. actually built the commercial one.
        So it was always necessary to get the Russians on board for the “pincer movement”.
        The enthusiasm for Empire which Churchill & co. had is reflected in their adoration of the monarch whose family problems were not so much on public display until Edward 8 backed the wrong side, Princess Diana had her dalliance, Andrew indulged his private interests, etc. etc., and the most recent smokescreen, black Archie.
        What a mess.

          I see the finance for the canal was so difficult it could only be arranged by the House of Rotschild (French branch) and the British only acquired control by 44% ownership + invasion, some years after it was proven to work properly.

    I wasn’t surprised to see Churchill up to his neck in this sacrifice of Aussie and New Zealand “detritus”.

    If any/all of this true, is it covered in CEW Bean’s “Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-1918”?

    Or its abridged “Anzac to Amiens: a Shorter History of the Australian Fighting Forces in the First World War”?

    It makes the sacrifices of our forefathers even more solemn – we just never realised who the real enemy was is.

    • This is a good read, Julius. Gallipoli was an organised massacre. The Turks had snipers on the cliffs entrenched ready and waiting to pick off officers as they landed. A short distance down the coast and the landing would have been a great deal safer and easier.

    • I am totally gobsmacked, to discover the subscribers of Gumshoe have been ignorant of this history. For anyone who wishes to study Australia’s involvement in foreign wars, starting with the first such involvement, the Boer War, the evidence is there, plainly and openly, (so far) for all to see. The Brits are the biggest instigators of mayhem on this planet, they firmly believe the planet is, and has been, theirs for the taking. That belief has not changed, or altered over the years. We condemn the Americans for the part they play in the World wide bloodshed, but always seem to give the Brits a free pass, whilst in reality, they are the instigators behind every such war and undermining. As an excellent example, we need look no further than Hong Kong. For 99 years they were given Hing Kong, during that period, how many elections were held in Hong Kong giving the citizens the opportunity to have their say.in put to the Governance over them ? I challenge all Gumshoe readers, to find even just ONE such election held. Yet, today the M.S.M. is full of the so called Totalitarian Bullying of the Chinese Government since they took back Hong Kong. Protestors, who have never, once in their miserable lives under the British yoke, ever been given the opportunity to participate in democratic process, all of a sudden have discovered Democracy and demand from the Chinese Government what the British refused to give them for 99 years.       As a direct result of that, said nation is now top of the pile and others are in a panic because they will be religated to the third World as a consequence, purely as a direct result of their own stupidity with their support and introduction of their Global order and destruction of Western countries manufacturing bases, transfering it all to China, all in the name of greater profits. At the same time giving China a step up. DUH ! Can someone tell me, the elite planners could not for see this happening ?? Now that it has, the best they can come up with is a repeat of WW 1 and WW 2 ??????????? And going by the M.S.M. and our very own Government, as well as many Australians on the street, our citizenry is 100% behind such actions ???

        I will have to search for the statement I read just other day that Sabbatai Zevi [of circa 1666 fame] was the son of the Istanbul agent for the “British” India Company. Quite incredible how, when these dots join, it all starts to make sense.

      • On HongKong democracy, I think you’ll probably find after 1997 the natives of HongKong were liberated from a good part of their incomes, so the “democracy movement” would be more symbolic of that, movements always get hijacked

    • Dee, thanks must go to the person who alerted us to the work of Gerry Docherty and Jim MacGregor. I think that may have been Greg Maybury. Or Phil. The Scots’ new book is “Prolonging the Agony.” Here is one Amazon review of it:

      I doubt if it was “so the elite could profit.” The name of my series of (ten?) articles is The Desperados. I claim that the top dogs (aka Illuminati) set out to rule the world, but soon they go trapped by their own crimes, into making things worse…. Please stay tuned.

      • Hello Mary, Much obliged🙏for your acknowledgement re: who originally brought the fine work of Gerry Docherty and Jim Macgregor to Gumshoe’s attention. I believe you may be right, in that it was indeed your ‘umble.

        In fact in print and privately I have done as much as any one person can humanly do to spruik their vitally important work to anyone who will listen or who can read, and as this comment attests, still do.

        I say this not to claim ‘bragging rights’; that ain’t my style. Theirs is an absolutely vital story, and I’m as impressed with their achievements now as the day back in 2014* when I first encountered their book. (The original pub date btw; the above date requires a correction.) And their followup Prolonging the Agony (2017?) is as essential, as is their website.

        I actually had the great pleasure and privilege of being invited by Jim to Edinburgh last year and spending two weeks with him and his family along with a group of like minded revisionist history junkies (or should I say “gumshoes”?) A most memorable experience to be sure, the only disappointment being that I didn’t get to meet Gerry D.

        As you know I also penned an essay titled From Great Games, Come Great Wars, inspired by their research and their revelatory exposition of the most consequential event of the past 120 odd years. This was one of my first forays into writing publicly about history and geopolitics, with Gumshoe being amongst the first forums to support my efforts. (And thus far the only Australian one to do so.) I will post below information for those readers herein who’d like to check this essay out.

In addition to the time already mentioned, we were betrayed by the Brits, (who many Australians seem to think the sun shines from their nether regions) during W W. 2 when the refused to allow Australian troops in transit, back to Australia to fight off the Japanese threat, (guess who the Brit was who refused to allow that ? Churchill.) Thank God the Australian P.M. at the time, had a pair between his legs, (unlike so many today) who overuled Churchill and gave an order directly to the Flotilla Commander to return the troops to Australia. The Brits had written Australia off, in effect, allowing the Japanese to with us what they wanted. Big wake up call for Australians. Then again, the Brits crawled back in to trade with Australia, our food/goods were cheap, Australians thought that was great, besides the Brits were white and spoke English like us, so they were just like us, until the Common Market came on stream. Guess what happened to the trade between Australia and the Brits ??? Now here we go again, with the collapse of the European Union and Brixit, the Brits are again looking for new horizons to rip off, and good old colonial Australia, once again sticks up it’s hand to get burned once more.
      Talk about suckers for punishment.

        I thought you people identified Jews as the culprits, now you are turning on the “Brits” but the royals are all German, surely they had a say in the promotion of Churchill ??? As for the Common Market, wool was going out of style anyway, probably nobody would give them credit after 1947 so we sent them lots of lamb and eggs until they fattened up again.
        Who benefitted most from all this turmoil, probably the bankers of New York & Zurich. But also, lots of people. The average Brits also benefited by becoming extremely skinny for about 20 years, they probably extended their lives by that much.

  12. Many, many years ago when I was a young man I assumed that the Gallipoli debacle was mainly due to the pomposity and ineptitude of the Pommy “commanders in chief”. The first assault on Gallipoli by the “Diggers” was remarkably successful as the Turk was not prepared and the invaders practically “walked into” the various Turkish settlements and villages in the area without much opposition. Incredibly they didn’t consolidate their position but withdrew to the landing area… now I suspect that it was on “orders from higher up”.

    Also many years ago I had a brief conversation with a Gallipoli veteran in which I made a derogatory comment about the moral fibre of the Turks. He looked at me for what seemed like an age and quietly said: “Oh no. Johnny Turk was a fine soldier. He fought blardy hard. He was trying to win.”

    What better way to rid nations of their gallant young men than to set them to killing each other.
