Well, this was unexpected.
UFC middleweight world champion Sean Strickland has been frozen out of the White House’s UFC extravaganza on the White House lawn because he opened his mouth and expressed a few opinions.
Imagine that. America — the nation that gave itself the First Amendment — is now flirting with the idea that speech is only free when it doesn’t offend the wrong people.
Let’s set the scene.
To celebrate America’s 250th birthday, they’re putting on a UFC event at the White House.
A cage fight. Frankly, it’s one of the most American ideas ever conceived. But now one of the UFC’s biggest stars — the world champion — has been shown the door — despite already having a ticket.
Why? According to Strickland, because he said things that upset powerful people. In particular, he wasn’t exactly sending Valentine’s Day cards to Benjamin Netanyahu.
That’s not irony. That’s comedy. The UFC crowd isn’t a gathering of timid conformists. These are the people who erupted when Trump walked into an arena. These are the “Fight! Fight! Fight!” people. The warriors. The die-hards. The MAGA faithful who turned political rallies into rock concerts.
And now one of their champions is being frozen out. What could possibly go wrong?
Trump has already taken body blows from parts of his base over the Epstein saga — what he called the Dem Hoax. Others drifted away over the Iran war policy decisions and military adventures overseas. More discontent came from those who want the assassination of Charlie Kirk to be taken seriously.
But Sean Strickland is different.
He’s not a politician. He’s a fighter. A world champion.
A man who says exactly what he thinks and then steps into a cage to back himself. For many Americans, that is the brand. That is the myth. Which is why this story has the potential to hit a nerve.
If America starts excluding cage fighters from its 250th celebration birthday party because they expressed unpopular opinions, then perhaps something bigger is going on. Perhaps the establishment has become — simply put — anti-American.
While Strickland, one of America’s most looked-up-to fighters is on the outside looking in, a foreign leader – war criminal Bibi – is going to receive the red-carpet treatment.
That won’t be lost on the UFC crowd. Or the MAGA crowd. Or anyone still clinging to the quaint old idea that free speech means hearing things you don’t like.
How much free speech is left in the land of the free?
It seems the Don has sold America down the river for a handful of shekels. If that’s the direction he chooses, all he’ll have left is those that once despised him — war-maggots like Ben Shapiro and Mark Levin. The irony is hard to miss. The UFC “Fight! Fight! Fight!” crowd, the people who packed arenas and gave Trump rock-star receptions, were looking for someone who would stand up to the swamp – not join it.
