  1. This comment from an eminent scientist and good friend, Clive A Marks:

This type of argument needs to emerge from beneath the weight of media bullshit and spin.

The battle is actually to save the soul of our country. It is a battle far more significant than Gallipoli because it is one that cuts to the essence of what we value and stand for; it is everything that is worth defending at home. In a real sense, are we to believe that those who did ‘fight for our country’ did so to make the current bleak values possible? So, what shall our legacy and obligation be to their memory and desires?

Bankers, lawyers and priests form a block of people from institutions with values that are in a contemporary sense, totally discredited (e.g. global financial crisis, child abuse, gay rights, condom use in Africa, protection of rent seekers and corporations, bigotry and human rights etc). Collectively they deny science (e.g. global warming, species loss, resource depletion etc) and protect the interests of the status quo by any means; colonising the democratic process has been an extension of financial power and it is inevitable.

But once the democratic process has been manipulated to become a farce, it no longer matters what people vote for. It is dangerous stuff as it has detached the will of the people from their ability to define the values and character of the country by their beliefes and aspirations. It allows ideologists of any ilk to dictate what our values should be in the name of concocted emergencies and self serving policy dressed up as national interest. This is no longer the slippery slope, it is the muddy valley bottom and the morass that Australians find themselves in.
