The national defense of Australia is a joke. Many years ago I heard that Oz could have purchased all the old F-4s (used in Vietnam) for a million apiece. Plus all the extra spares and accessories that went with them. Instead, they bought the F-111 for (as I recall) 200 million a piece.
Hello, today’s technology is really based on the quality of the MISSILES not the air frame that delivers them. The old reliable F-4 could have been upgraded with newer tech and the latest missiles. We could have had 200 of the F-4s for one F-111. – Just imagine an invading force dealing with a flight of 200 well armed aircraft as compared to a single F-111. Hell, we could have had a huge amount of aircraft to sit in reserve and training. Lots of small airfields dotted all over the country that could have accommodated such a dispersed air force.
The defense establishment of Australia is less interested in national defense and more in kick-backs.

As the authorities seem to be stealing everything they can out from under citizens why should I care if it’s defended or not. The greater battle is who owns the Pacific. The US has claims over the Philippines via the Spanish war for California etc and over Taiwan via the Pacific war 1941-5, therefore Australia is a strategic asset. China will have to act while it has a demographic advantage, which will fade due to one-child policy 1980-2020. They run out of cannon fodder in about ten years.
