Blame the Males. A Woman’s Point of View on “the Iran War”

Half of the world’s population is female. (Actually, a bit more than half, since males die younger.) This article claims a place for females to speak out against the Middle East war that began nine days ago.

My argument goes like this: A guy wants war because he needs to do his masculine thing. A gal recoils at the prospect of war’s cruelty. Today women ought to yell, unapologetically, that this war must end, right now. Never mind that it has already begun. It is a stupid, cruel war that should not have begun, and needs to be stopped.

Are there roles for women that differ from that of men? In the long scheme of evolution, humans developed two slates of genes, per sex. Beyond doubt, females got the exclusive role of bearing children. That required not only an anatomical set of reproductive equipment, but certain emotions of caring which give protection to the baby. When it’s time for the 2am feeding, a mother does not roll over and say “Oh, forget it.”

Males evolved other roles, including that of protecting the tribe. They have greater physical strength than the female and they love competition. Without any need for a modern law of Selective Service, males rush into action when an enemy group attacks them. They also recognize a boss and willingly follow his rules in battle. When the chief tells the soldiers which weapons to use, they don’t say “No way, Jose.”

I am a woman and I can say ‘no way, Jose.” I do, in fact, say it now. The current war looks to me to be Nonsense to the Nth degree. Even putting aside, for a moment, my female “caring” instinct, I can say “Hey, stop engaging in this ridiculous destruction.”

An American soldier’s decision to assist in the walloping of Teheran relies on two of his instincts: to protect the tribe and to follow a boss. So automatic are those instincts that the poor fellow can’t say No.

He can’t “use the brains God gave him” since the brains God gave him have distinctive channels. The channel of logic is suppressed during inter-tribal fights. This is usually a good thing. A soldier should turn off the logic part of his brain and just contribute to a mass action.

The instinct of loyalty is big, too. Both males and females are automatically dissuaded from any behavior that may appear disloyal to their tribe. They must not support any statement that is favorable to the enemy – or their neighbors may get very angry with them.

Two Men Who Think Females Can Make a Smart Judgment of War

Occasionally you hear a man say he wishes that the female revulsion to war-violence would get more attention. I have recently come across this in writings by George Crile and Philip Allott. George Crile (1864-1943), was a US Army General in World War I. As a surgeon he had built a military hospital for the French before the Americans joined the war. He admits that he himself is a perfect example of how the male body switches into fight mode. When he “heard the war drums” in France he felt swept into battle. (He says he was surprised to discover that he possessed such an urge.) I will quote Crile ‘s idea below.

Philip Allott is a Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge and a retired British diplomat. Needless to say, he has had many experiences of observing the strategies of war and of peace-making. He is also a student of biology and opposes the notion that our species must come to ultimate destruction because of our stupidity. One way around the march to war is to listen to the female instinct, he says. International law, after all, has something to do with rights for all tribes. A female can easily sense that children everywhere need to be cared for, not just her own tribe’s children.

Philip Allot’s View

Being an international law scholar, Philip Allott has never had trouble thinking of humanity as a whole. In fact he is really a philosopher, and author of the 2016 book “Eutopia: New Philosophy and New Law for a Troubled World.” One of his remarks about ‘gender’ is found in that book, where he sees the use of that term as encapsulating the historical fact that half of the human race was prevented from fully using their capacities.

Note: I was born in 1947 and witnessed the amazing event know as women’s liberation of the 1970s. For those too young to believe that ladies had previously been ‘left out’ of things, please believe me. Moreover, most of us, me included, were quite willing to accept this as a norm! (But I’ve got over that, OK?)

Allott says, on page 301: “It is a devastating thought-experiment to try to imagine how the whole of human history would have been, if women had been able to bring to it all their capacities and potentialities. One might even imagine a possible state of human consciousness in which women would be regarded as ‘the first sex’, rather than ‘the second sex’….”

Allott harbors the hope that the female sensibility about war will be able to influence the readiness of nations to fall into that particular form of international conflict. Gals like me can say (and of course guys can also say) that we should at least curtail the massive killing that is going on for ancient ‘male’ goals. It can only be helpful, to all parties, to understand that war is partially determined by tribal interactions that are no longer relevant.

You may recall that Pat Tillman, a 26-year-old football star, said that he was emotionally driven to enlist in the Army in 2001, as a reaction to the [alleged] Muslim attack on the World Trade Center. By contrast, in February 2026 there were no American men emotionally rushing to fight the Iranians for harming us, as the Iranians had not harmed us. The plotting of the US attack on Iran took place in board rooms by men whose concern was something other than the need to protect the American tribe.

George Crile’s View

As mentioned, George Crile was a surgeon. He was also an evolutionist who studied “patterns of behavior.” He made trips all over the world to collect evidence as to how different animals carry out these patterns. Crile certainly considered the human pattern of pugnacity to be innate. In his book entitled “A Mechanistic View of War,” the following claim is made on page 97:

“Perhaps the present feminist agitation [the suffragette movement of 1919] will bring a favorable change in human destiny. When we consider that woman was evolved to preserve, to perpetuate the species; that in the course of that she developed altruistic traits, it would seem that there must now also be involved in her a great fundamental reaction against the harshness of man. This harshness, this greed for killing, cannot be mitigated save through further evolution.

“Perhaps one of the influences in this further evolution will be woman’s natural reaction against needless violence. Man…with all of his beneficent control of the forces of nature has also crated vast forces for his own destruction. [These are] so vast that he is today in a death struggle with the Frankenstein of his own creation.”

Ladies, You Have the Floor

Thus we’ve seen two men of ‘universalist’ intellect, Allott and Crile, musing over how the craziness of our modern warmaking could perhaps be turned around by women using their particular gifts to counteract a foolish march to war. As I have already stated, it’s not that 21st century men are acting on an ancient motive to engage in a fight-for-our-tribe. But lower-rank soldiers, and apparently much of the public, go along with war orders from the top. “It’s what we always do.”

Clearly the whole structure of government in the US is called into question by the Feb 28 attack on Iran. The Internet is lit up with claims that this war issued from a president’s need to cover his personal sins, or that Congress’s abdication of its war powers stems from a concern with “the mid-term elections.” Many say that the determiner of our policy is really Israel, or the priorities of the oil industry. The US president has even claimed that helping Iranian women get freed from oppression was a reason for our involvement. What will they think of next?

Right now, logic could come into play. The historic achievement of H sapiens – logical reasoning via argumentation — can show that going to war for any of those reasons could not possibly be in the US’s national interest. This is not rocket science. It’s very simple. We are now acting like idiots by starting a third world war – for no gain.

To conclude: I am not claiming that a basic male instinct for war is the cause of the current war. But the male’s ‘need to be male’ does get utilized by the war planners — your typical guy dreads to be labeled a sissy, saying “Oh no, not war, please.” But I, being female, can say it without fear of attracting a label — it’s proper for me to object to war. Heck, I could object to it merely on environmental grounds: “Once the crazy weapons have ruined the planet, I won’t be able to feed my kids. Wah! Stop this war!”

Oh, and by the way: “Demote all the jerks who think logic doesn’t exist. It does exist!”

  2. Perhaps the author might have noted that every male had a mother at one time.
    The breeding and education provided by THE MOTHER, might be an aspect that should be considered in regard to the males complicity and desire for a war or two, for the interests of the family.
    Well, perhaps this alleged Mother failed.
    Who allegedly stated:
    ‘If my sons did not want wars there would be none’ ( or something similar?)
    A family responsible for the Education in the responsibilities of being a decent moral and ethical member of society, thus a decent human being commences at the breast of a mother and should not just be lumped on to all the males.

    • Those who have a plan will meet and deal/defeat with the plan/s ‘of others’.
      Going to be fun to find out and experience which plan succeeds and will last the next thousand or so, after thousands of years of historic planning on/of this planet.
      But we can move on nonetheless.

  7. Sandra’s question is quite relevant at this time? Thanks to our non-intelligent political leaders of recent times we Aussies are at the beck-and-call of others. At one time Australia drilled and recovered oil from our own ground then had it refined in every State or most States (I think). Then some direction, I imagine, came from overseas to say “desist this activity and import from Singapore.” to which our ever faithful politicians, not to us, said “yes sir”.

    I lived most my life in the “refinery town” of Kwinana, W.A., even from before the refinery was constructed in the early 50’s. Now all we have to show is a tank farm to store imported petroleum.
    How much longer that tank farm will be useful is now unknown.

    Which brings up another subject. Was this current war held off by the financiers of U.S. and Israel until the non-petroleum replacement industry was put in place, at least partially.
