James O’Neill Obituary — The ‘Passing’ of a Geopolitical Era

by Dee McLachlan

I have very sad news to report — the passing of one of Gumshoe’s regular contributors: James O’Neill.

On the 11th of December 2022, I received this email from John O, “Sadly James O’Neil passed away on 5th December. His funeral is on Friday 16th December at St Augustines at Racecourse rd in Brisbane.” [At 11:00 am]

James first contacted me in late 2014, and I think his first article on Gumshoe News was published on 8 January 2015, “Why the Secrecy on the Mh17 Investigation.”

He wrote:

“This must be the first time in Australian history since 1901 that negotiations and agreements between sovereign nations had been conducted on Australia’s behalf by the Federal Police. [concluding…]

“It is clear that the Government’s professed support for Security Council Resolution 2116 (2014) for a “full, thorough, and independent international investigation into the incident in accordance with international civil aviation guidelines” is no more than window dressing for a much wider geopolitical agenda.”

And signed off,

James O’Neill is a former academic who has practiced as a barrister for the past 30 years. He has a special interest in international human rights issues. He may be contacted at j.oneill@bigpond.net.au

In all these years, (sadly) we never spoke on the phone but communicated regularly by email. I occasionally asked him for advice about Family Court and Youth Court issues — and he was always appalled by what was unfolding in the cases I was assisting with.

I am not sure how many articles he wrote for Gumshoe but it must be in the region of 40 to 50 articles. One of his targets was the mainstream media’s reporting, e.g., “Hartcher and the Sydney Morning Herald Rewrite History Again” (February 2016):

“There is no clearer example of the sorry state to which Australian mainstream media has descended than the column by the Sydney Morning Herald’s political editor Peter Hartcher, published on 9 February 2016.”

And his regular mantra was…

The Australian government does not seem to have any plan beyond doing what the Americans want, and as their wishes shift with the vagaries of the power struggle in Washington, Australian policy seems even more directionless than usual.” [As reported in “Australia’s Dubious Role in Syria: an Ongoing Saga” September 2017.]

And “Australia Continues to Make the Wrong Choices in its Geopolitics” (May 2022). As the years went on, and especially over the ‘lockdown years’ many readers voiced their disagreement with James’ support for China relations and the China’s Belt and Road Initiative. But that is what we’re here for — to air ideas and differences.

It was some months back that James mentioned he had gone to hospital, but he continued to contribute after that, so for us, his passing came as a shock.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends, and he will be surely missed.

This was his final contribution, “Australia Risks Stumbling Into a Much Greater War” (16 October 2022) in his always politely sarcastic style:

“One has to wonder what substitute Australia’s defence planners, up to and including the Minister for defence, are using as a replacement for their brains. It is a serious question and it is raised following the decision by the Australian government to commit weapons to the war currently being waged between Russia and Ukraine…

“In all of which Australia remains blissfully unaware of the dangers its involvement in the Ukraine war poses. It is probably too much to hope that there will be a realisation of the very real risks posed by its present blind compliance to the United States poses.”

I found this list of articles from James published in Independent Australia.

And this video (which I had never seen before).

  1. Wow, am I ever sorry I gave James such a hard time. My constant cry was that he said “The US did such-and-such,” where I felt it was the Globalists that did it.

Anyway, congratulations to him for keeping steady at all times about International Law. A good man nowadays is hard to find!

Of course I want war criminals to be punished. Let’s do it. Do it for James O’Neill and Charlie Gittings and Alyssa Peterson, and no doubt many others.

And into the bargain, let’s punish the people who killed Charlie, Alyssa, etc.

And thank you Dee, for always giving the floor to James, and making marvelous maps for his essays.

  2. If y’all type, in double quotes, into Gumshoe search engine: “by James O’Neill” you will see quite a range of topics he covered. Here is a snatch from his Malcolm Turnbull critique:

“[Faustus] strikes a bargain with Lucifer: in exchange for 24 more years on earth and magic powers he must give his body and soul to Lucifer as payment.

“The time eventually comes when Faustus announces his intention to renounce magic and repent, but he is unable to do so. When his allotted 24 years have nearly expired he realizes that he gave up his soul for no good reason. He is dragged off to Hell where he is to forever remain.

“An argument can be made that the present Prime Minister shows some remarkable parallels with Doctor Faustus….”

  3. I have just checked with the church. Yes, James’ funeral will be held this Friday at ELEVEN am, Dec 16, 2022 at St Augustine’s Anglican Church, 56 Racecourse Rd, Brisbane. Please attend if you can.

I have also just remembered that he was born in NZ.

  4. This bio in New Dawn: Born in New Zealand, James has travelled and lectured around the world at different universities. He also worked at the UN in Geneva as a consultant. He became a senior lecturer at the University of Waikato, and completed law degrees at the University of Auckland, being admitted to the bar in 1984. James has practised at the bar ever since, first in NZ and from 2002 in Brisbane. His special areas of interest are international law, human rights and the law of war. He has been published in New Dawn magazine and online journals such as New Eastern Outlook, Counterpunch, New Matilda and elsewhere.

    • Hey, Everybody, how about we not start in on the usual topics. How about we stick with eulogizing our dear James. He did a lot for us.

And how about we limit comments in general to 200 words. Unless it’s clearly worth going longer.

      • On topic!

US or USA? Who controls the ‘US’?

Wow, am I ever sorry I gave James such a hard time. My constant cry was that he said “The US did such-and-such,” where I felt it was the Globalists that did it.

        • Criss cross, my remark was not aimed at you.

And anyway “the staff” has long since agreed that comments do not have to be on the article at hand. Indeed they seldom are. But I would have thought today was for James, as such.

I shall now stay out of this thread. Do what you want.

        • Indeed and he did not mention a banker despite my entreaties.
Had a few beers and also dinner at home with James and it is very sad.
          we never argued.
Complete agreement aboutt the crazy official government 911 conspiracy theory with those being sucked into the ‘19 muslims did it’ unscientific claptrap.
Wonder if Molan was a fellow official government conspiracy theorist as well!?
Seems that most of the normies are also to be held accountable for supporting the war crime invasion of the Middle East, not to forget the Howard government crimes.

          • Sorry Mary, I was just trying to point out who the real owners and controllers of Western governments are.

What Every American Should Know: The Republic vs The Corporation

            https://t2conline.com/what-every-american-should-know-the-republic-vs-the-corporation/

Did you know THE UNITED STATES (in capitals) isn’t a country; it’s a corporation! In all contract law, it is always significant that all capitals are used when referencing a corporate name, a legal clear distinction from a live individual. The corporation was created for the District of Columbia, aka Washington, D.C. (not even a state), via the Act of 1871. THE UNITED STATES corporation operates under private international law with their own corporate constitution.

The various federal agencies, also corporations as are BLM (Black Lives Matter), CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), FBI (Federal Bureau of investigation), FDA (Food and Drug Administration, FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission), and WHO (World Health Organization) to name a few.

These are all American taxpayer funded subsidiaries under THE UNITED STATES corporation. But wait aren’t we suppose to be a Republic? ………………..”

          •
Indeed and he did not mention a banker despite my entreaties.
Nor did he mention any of the “secret services” comprising the six eyes (the five eyes plus Mossad), or the operations control in the “City of London”, or their Quartermaster’s Store in Israel, or the proxy “think tanks” like the Council on Foreign Relations, or the daft infantry in ‘Masonry, or the craven sycophants in the corporatocracy etc.

I do agree with his apparent sympathy with poor Asiaman who has this corporate collectivism imposed on him by vicious thugs primed, promoted and protected by misanthropic megalomaniacs in Europe and by the proxy empires of mainly Anglo-America.

Meanwhile, we culpable dupes of Judaeo-Masonic Anglo-Americanism are the problem; not the solution.

Anyhow, I do hope that James’ loyalties were not finally to the self adulating “establishment” and that his friends and relatives can find some consolation in their grief.

  6. Good on you James, you were fully immersed into the fog of war complete with blinkers.
Its a great credit to your intellect that you could shake that indoctrination. Different views on peripheral subjects is neither here nor there. It was and still is an honour to have you here with us.
    Condolences to James’s close

  7. I had the good fortune of having the habit of a meal and a beer with James at one of the local hotels where I learned more about our James. Something which I haven’t seen elsewhere is that he was very senior in the NZ intelligence service where he certainly knew what was going on and was involved in banning nuclear warships after the rainbow warrior affair.
He had many friends worldwide including Canberra as well as China where he got much of his info from. Many of these friends were ex diplomats and/or politicians.
He also spoke several languages which he pick up in his various university jobs, mainly in Europe. It was amusing when he spoke Italian to a supposedly Italian waiter or waitress who didn’t have a clue what he was saying.
I will miss you James. My sympathies go to Elizabeth and your offspring.

    • Now that could well explain a ‘ignorance’ 💁🏼🤡 of the globalist bankers at work?
Wonder what he thought of the Klaus Schrab, Harari et.al. and their mad control freaks, ‘educated’ by and from the WEF now running his old country. (and infiltrated here as well)
Going to be fun soon…….. note the Twitter now a twittering.💁🏼😂⚖️
May the great bird of happiness poop on many a ‘normie’s’ shoulder.🦅

  8. As James’ articles were published in Sweden, Norway and Germany, I let the editors know of his passing. Here the first answer:

“James O’Neill made a fantastic job with his articles, wanting piece, humanity and against imperialism and false media”/Anders
(Anders; Prof emeritus Anders Romelsjo of Global Politics, Sweden)

  9. I say well done James. You regularly had naysayers, but did they have the knowledge of the subject you were writing about? Its easy to disagree if you are on the wrong wavelength. Don’t forget none of us is ever right all the time (except me, ha ha).

In the above video I believe he did very well. He could hardly have covered every and all items mentioned by our commenters in a reasonable time frame. Had he been writing a book, our disappointments may have been covered.

My condolences to the Family of James O’Neill. I believe he was a great Anzac, but not in the military sense.
