At the most vulnerable time in Julian Assange’s legal
battle in the UK Courts of Justice against extradition to the
United States, the Murdoch propaganda machine has hit
him with a coordinated attack.
On 20 April, four days after the US government provided
the token assurances the UK Court asked for, on which it will
rule by 20 May, Rupert Murdoch’s The Australian published
not one but two vicious attacks on Assange’s character.
Under the headline “Assange’s sordid tale of treachery”,
former Murdoch editor Alan Howe wrote: “Julian Assange is
a criminal, a fabulist and an undisciplined, arrogant workshy fraud who lacks an education while remaining a mannerless vulgarian. The WikiLeaks founder is no journalist.”
A second attack compared Assange to a deceptive scorpion.
As a longstanding researcher for the Australian Citizens
Party, I was very familiar with Alan Howe from his days as
editor of Murdoch’s Herald Sun, in the period that included the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Following is an edited version
of a X (formerly Twitter) “thread” I tweeted on 20 April in
response to Alan Howe’s attack.

This filth, Alan Howe, has today emerged to sink the
boot into Julian Assange as he awaits possible extradition,
for exposing war crimes, to the USA which perpetrated the
war crimes.
But there wouldn’t have been war crimes without the
Iraq war…
The 2003 invasion of Iraq is still, in my opinion, the war
crime of the 21st century.
Howe is not a “journalist”, but a lifelong apparatchik of
the world’s most evil propaganda organisation, the Murdoch media machine, which didn’t “report” on the Iraq
war, it campaigned for it.
As editor of the biggest newspaper in Australia at the
time, Melbourne’s Herald Sun, Alan Howe did what all 172
other Murdoch newspaper editors around the world did—
publish lie after lie after lie after lie to cement the faked
WMDs threat as a justification for war.
Like a good Nazi, Howe was just following orders, from
“Dr Evil” Murdoch himself, as all Murdoch editors do.
Howe’s career, going back to the 1970s, shows he loves
following Murdoch’s orders.
For example, he was one of Murdoch’s strike-breakers
at Wapping in the 1980s.
To this day, Howe and his chief columnist, Andrew
Bolt, have never apologised for their roles in aggressively
pushing the lies that orchestrated the Iraq invasion and murdered a million people.
Instead, he’s now trying to destroy Assange, who most
exposed those lies.
Again, it’s under orders from Murdoch (no doubt uttered
from whatever crypt the cadaverous cartoon villain lies in,
hooked up to a permanent blood transfusion).
Murdoch is running a propaganda campaign against
Assange to undermine and blunt public anger over his extradition.
In 2019, Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal signalled Murdoch’s intent with a disgusting editorial against Assange,
crowing that after “Julian Assange has done much harm to
American interests over the last decade”, he was now heading for “accountability in a US court”.
Since then, public opinion, especially in Australia, has
well and truly swung behind Assange, prompting all sides
of politics to call for him to be freed.
But the USA is treating those calls with contempt, so Murdoch, who trades in defining faux patriotism, is giving cover.
Howe’s diatribe is Murdoch laying down propaganda
cover for a foreign power—it’s as simple as that.
Be clear on the truth of this:
One side, Assange, has rotted in solitary in Belmarsh for
five years, for exposing the truth.
The other side, Howe and Murdoch, are dripping in the
blood of a million dead Iraqis, living in luxury and arrogant
hubris, and doubling down on filthy lies.
