I used to rock climb in South Africa in the 1970s. Table Mountain was our backyard vertical playground. I also spent 3 months climbing the Alps in Switzerland and the Dolomites in Italy, plus a trip to Patagonia. I treasured these spaces. So was stunned when I saw the headlines in The Australian this morning.

“Rock climbers are being threatened with fines of more than $346,000 per offence in Victoria. Sky News host James Macpherson said The Australian revealed public service investigators are using draconian culture heritage laws to threaten rock climbers and others with hefty fines.
“The story goes on to talk about how a lot of rock climbing in the Grampians has been banned because we want to protect Aboriginal rock art,” Mr Macpherson said. “Even though some of this rock art has to be seen using X-ray glasses because it’s invisible to the naked eye.”
“He said the First Peoples State Relations Unit has been taking number plates in carparks around the Grampians and reportedly left a letter at someone’s house asking them to explain why they were visiting the area. “It’s pretty unbelievable.”
Apparently three quarters of the best rock climbing areas have been closed off.
I believe this is the “canary tester.”
This is planned under “heritage” towards a very small minority group. But these kind of bankrupting punishments will soon be imposed for “climate transgressors” or possibly carnivores. I read yesterday — I think in the UK — that they are planning to fine families 10,000 pounds for using more energy in their home than allocated.
The gates of the paddock is slowly closing, and soon the market shelves will be filled with bug products.
