Speed Camera Extortion?

4

Melbourne’s most successful camera (Fitzroy Street /Lakeside Drive intersection) sucked in nearly $2 million over a 27 day period. I drive with great care, but got fined here – by a system disguised as a government cash register.

On the 1st of August I took some photographs and wrote to Civic Compliance Victoria objecting to the confusing signage – specifically the 40 and 60 km signs either side of the intersection. On the 1st of August (photograph below)  the sign was 60 km.

flipside fine2It is going to be interesting to see if Civic Compliance reviews my request in a positive light and cancels the fine. This would then imply the signage was confusing. Would they then be liable to pay back several million dollars worth of fines? It might be like extracting blood from a stone.

Update:

Decide to go to court (Dec). There happened to be several people in front of me with multiple fines from this same camera. One woman had 12 (8 had been previously waived). Well, by the time I stood up the Magistrate was tired of hearing about the camera at the intersection of Fitzroy and Lakeside Drive. But he couldn’t really concede that it was confusing – so they changed the signs. For all he knew, there might have been a string of people behind challenging the same camera. After reading my written material he gave me a ‘free pass’ based on my long safe driving record.

  1. Hi great site just a quick comment – never pay fines or tickets of any kind. Check out these awesome guys at aussiespeedingfines.com they have an ebook and tons of information on how you can simply and easily fight back against revenue raising under false pretenses (safety etc). Even fine or ticket that is challenged limits the ability of the system to steal from you or others in the future. They also expose the real truth about road safety and are a bunch of all-around great people literally fighting for the freedoms of Australians everywhere whether they know it or not. Some of the court precedents that have been achieved by them and some of their members are truly astounding and well worth a good look.

  2. Hey there, I was just wondering if you had any luck in fighting this fine? I have copped a very similar one myself and don’t believe that the signage in the area is fair. Thanks!

    • Michelle – I decided to go to court – begin of Dec.
My defense being that they changed the signs after I complained but you have only one right of reply. Use the attached photos if you need – I can verify dates. I Aug, then they changed the signs before 13 Aug.

  3. Hey, I was wondering if you had any luck fighting this fine? I received one myself today and do not believe the signage in the area is fair. And the fine itself is enormous! Thanks.
