What Makes for a “Conspiracy Theory” With Regard to the Corona Virus?

In the current atmosphere of a purported pandemic, people will want to know how to avoid misinformation. In general, people want trustworthy leaders and honest experts. I will try to sort out what this means today.

Everyone has human-nature instincts. For instance, we want protection. When something frightening is going on, we may yearn for the help of Mommy and Daddy. I think there are many people — I will call them the trusters — who consider any government leader trustworthy, and who see all experts as honest.

Of course it’s good to be a truster where trust-worthy people are occupying the official positions. It’s also healthy to be a truster where experts — thanks to a culture of honesty — can be assumed to be telling the truth. But there are many times when discernment is needed.

God knows there have been many instances in recent or distant history in which a leader was anything but trustworthy, and experts were deceitful for selfish reasons, or were just stupid.

In the presence of that reality, many educated people will be skeptics.  Their very education will have trained them to be discerning, to look for hidden motives. I’ll call them the discerners.

Conspiracy Theory

A conspiracy theorist is usually a discerner, not a truster. He may yearn for the help of Mommy and Daddy, but that won’t make him start to trust whoever is holding a purportedly responsible position. In fact he is prejudiced against holders of positions. He thinks it more likely than not that today’s leaders are not playing according to Hoyle.

Some discerners are quite passionate seekers of truth. As I am one myself, I offer the suggestion that what really gets a truth-seeker going is not so much truth (the Holy Grail) but desire to stamp out the non-truth. I assume we evolved an instinct for reacting harshly to cheaters. “Get ’em.”

Here are just ten conspiracies related to a pandemic (I mean the actual baddies conspiring, not the “theorizing” about it by co-called conspiracy theorists:

— the creating of a virus as a bioweapon

— the delivering of it to an enemy in a Trojan-horse way

— the deliberate creation of terror in the community

— the setting up of economic scarcity

— the furtive introduction of “the cashless society”

— the chipping of everyone, to make them traceable

— the insertion, by vaccine, of a time-released disease

— the creation of income-dependence on the state

— the burgeoning of a spy system to catch any rebels

— the excuse of self-isolation to prevent street protests.

Tightening the Noose

I think the current Corona virus is indeed a big conspiracy. I think the media is, wittingly or unwillingly, setting the public up for a gradual transition to a “new way of life” all based on the supposedly natural phenomenon of a disease.

I speculate that President Trump’s urging people to “relax” several days ago, was to give time for some of the routines to set in. By now, people are seeing such practices as social distancing and self-isolation as acceptable. More, those practices are seen to be noble, patriotic, virtuous thigs to do for the greater good.

I don’t doubt that there’s such a thing as trying to medically control an outbreak of disease. Nor do I dismiss the idea of virtuous self-sacrifice — I wish we had more if it.  But since I take the pandemic to be of crafty origin, done for a malicious purpose, I can’t fall in line with the “Oh, you’d better obey; the leaders care about you” nonsense.

I am wary of the gradual build-up of social control.  Here is a smattering of recent news items from Alabama, Kentucky, and Rhode Island:

“MONTGOMERY, Ala. Mayor Steven Reed has invoked a curfew effective tonight, March 27, beginning at 10 p.m. through 5 a.m. until further notice. They say the purpose of the curfew is to prevent social gatherings in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Montgomery Police Department encourages citizens to observe this curfew and remain indoors during these hours unless you have a valid reason to be outdoors.”

“Kentucky’s governor says he is considering closing the border between Kentucky and Tennessee, and checkpoints have been set up in the Florida Keys to restrict access.”

“(CNN) — Rhode Island’s governor said Friday that law enforcement officers will stop cars and knock on doors in coastal communities to identify people who’ve been to New York state … restricting the movements of out-of-state visitors to slow the spread of coronavirus.” Starting Saturday, Rhode Island law enforcement officers and the National Guard will be ‘going door-to-door’ in coastal communities, asking people if they’ve been to New York and requesting their contact information,’ she said. Police may pull over individuals with New York state license plates.

“All individuals who have traveled to New York have already been ordered to self-quarantine for 14 days. These added measures will make sure law enforcement identifies individuals who should be following the self-quarantine order, said the governor, a Democrat.  The penalty for violating this order initially is a fine, and additional violations of the order could be punishable by a prison sentence, Raimondo said.

As far as I know the legislators of these states have not been debating the laws that criminalize the mentioned behaviors.

The New Personal Adviser — the Media

In the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of articles promoted on the Internet along the lines of advice for your health, your relationships, and how to raise children. I dislike the way an image has been created of a sort of kindly aunt, while that aunt is no sense accountable to us for her choices of these ways to live.

Now that we are in a “national crisis,” all the media outlets are taking up the aunty role (or the uncle role) with regard to the hardships that everyone is purportedly suffering.  Here is a typical example, from Julie Gottman in The Washington Post, March 25 “In Lockdown with Your Partner?” Here’s How Healthy Couples Survive.”

“As listeners, they first ask questions to plumb the depths of their partner’s needs before responding — questions such as Why is this so important to you? or Is there some background or childhood history behind this? They create fair compromises: each partner first identifying those closely held values and dreams that they cannot negotiate, then together finding ways to concede in areas where there is some give. Last but not least, they cuddle and touch each other often — with affection, not just eroticism.

“These habits of communication prevent poisons like criticism, contempt and violence from toxifying the air a couple breathes. They create warmth, safety and nourishment instead, so partners can relax and grow individually and together.”

I can’t fault Ms Gottman’s perspective at all. I like it.  But, sorry, it gives me the creeps that WaPo (which has done many a bad thing to our nation, in my opinion) is now in the honored position of protecting our marriages.  Like yuck, man!

Ominous Words from CNN

Please recall, from above, the distinction between trusters and discerners.   My inspiration to write the article at hand, came from a March 25, 2020 piece at CNN with the stunning title:  “Debunk coronavirus misinformation and conspiracy theories from friends and family.” It is by Oliver Darcy, CNN Busines.  I abridge it here:

Misinformation and family

“While the coronavirus pandemic has isolated family and friends inside their homes, it has in many cases increased online or over-the-phone communication with loved ones.. Relatives are checking up on each other, sharing updates, and providing comic relief.

But, in some cases, relatives and friends share poor information — whether it is bad science related to how to prevent the virus, debunked rumors about cities being put on lockdown, [ah, March 25 was 3 long days ago], or conspiracy theories about the origins of Covid-19.

While any strain of misinformation is not ideal, misinformation related to a public health crisis has an especially dangerous element to it.   NYT’s Rukmini Callimach put it this way earlier in the week:

“I admit that it was mildly amusing when family members, who don’t understand where to get verified news, fell for wacko conspiracies. Like the idea 9/11 was an inside job or that the moon landing was fake. We’re now at a point where misinformation may cost [people] their lives.” [Does the arrest of Gumshoe staff come to mind?]

Bad information during a public health emergency poses a risk to those who fall victim to it. So you will likely have the urge and feel the responsibility to correct it. But it can be incredibly awkward to correct misinformation or debunk conspiracy theories when it is being shared by a relative or good friend. So what’s the best approach to take? Some experts gave their advice

Before taking any action, it is important to remember that most people have no intention of sharing bad information. In fact, most people want to do the exact opposite of that. “The research,” MIT professor David Rand, who studies misinformation, told me, “suggests that people really do want to share only accurate information. … The people on your family group chain, most social media users want to only be sharing stuff that’s accurate.”

So why do people share bad information? They might not know better, and the type of content circulating during a health emergency might make them less judicious, David Rand said: “There’s evidence that more emotionally evocative content makes people less discerning. In particular, when people rely on intuition and emotion they are more likely to believe false claims. Statements, for example, that are scary make people less inclined to stop and think about it.”

Be empathetic

“The first step is to have a sense of empathy,” BuzzFeed reporter Craig Silverman, who has reported on false news for years, told me. [Check him out, please.] Silverman noted that people are sharing information because they care and feel like they are part of a larger conversation. “People, especially family and friends in group chats,” he noted, “they are not trying to be malicious.”

Emily Vraga, a professor at the University of Minnesota who studies health misinformation [oh boy, has she read Consider the Lilies?] , told me that a blunt factual correction is “equally as effective” as one in which the person takes a more empathetic approach. “So I think using that affirmative empathetic tone is better because the correction still works and it doesn’t make [the person you’re correcting] feel thrown under the bus,” she said.

Silverman suggested people consider citing sources like the CDC. Because some people might be skeptical of even the federal government, Vraga recommended citing local sources. Professor Rand noted you “want to use language that communicates you are trying to be helpful” and not confrontational.

Silverman suggested if you have a family member or friend who has shared bad information that it might be better to reach out privately. “Maybe send them a message and say, ‘Hey, I noticed you just posted this. I have seen some information that seems to contradict this.’ Think about how you can take it one-on-one in a personal way and provide them information from a source they are likely to trust.”

[Gee, if any of us conspiracy theorists get exactly that email we will know the source!]

Rand emphasized that his research indicated that “when people stop and think about things, they are actually very good at telling what is true and what is not true… [Objection, Your Honor!].  “If you just nudge people to think a little more about accuracy, it can have a real impact.”

“Find some true pieces of information,” Rand advised. “Then say, ‘Hey, I found this from the World Health Organization. What do you think?’ [Dearest Lord!].  One thing everyone agreed on: You have a responsibility to help correct bad information. “When the misinformation can literally damage people’s health, I do think we all have a responsibility,” Silverman noted. “You don’t want people to be doing things that are bad for them or bad for society,” added Rand.

Turning Me into a Milquetoast

I want to confess that the above advice on how to deal with conspiracist head cases (read: truth-seekers) has had a direct suppressing effect on me. I’m worried that the friends who have been more or less staying away from You-Know-What topics with me (think Boylston St) will now be armed.

Heck they will even be feeling a duty to put me out of my delusions — for society’s sake. The “trusters” will conquer the “discerners.”

  1. You know everytime i think about it i keep coming to the same conclusion: We all know that ALL POLITICIANS LIE, yet all of a sudden because of some alleged cold virus (as shown on dettol bottles) we are in total panic stricken lock down, too afraid to place a towel on the beach and catch up with friends. For me it’s pretty simple, what ever Mr.Wonky eyes (Dan. A) says i will be doing the opposite, thats the only way to stay honourable to our fellow men, women and children…

  3. The thing about the CNN rave that strikes me more than anything is that’s monstrously patronising.
Ans such a quality is. Of course, synonymous with insecurity

    • It strikes me that no-one’s prepared to do an up-front rendition of martial law, they’re just dithering around half-arsing it, which pretty much puts the ball in OUR court

      • The WA “authorities” have nowhere near the means to do a proper job anyway. The Premier has purportedly ordered booz outlets to restrict purchases because he’s nervous about Po energy being consumed by prospective alcohol-fueled incidents during such a time, but there’s no legal back-up, and as would be expected, the roll-out is just an absurd joke

  4. Friday, US time it was announced on the X22 Report that the Trump Administration had merged the Federal Reserve with the Treasury Department. This news should be the best news that the world has ever had. However there has not been a peep of that situation on the msm in Australia.

That situation is what I call a CONSPIRACY in big letters. News of that dimension being withheld from the public.

The nationalising of the Federal Reserve will positively impact, eventually on all of our lives, worldwide. The end of globalisation is in sight. Sovereign countries will regain their right to govern for the benefit of their people.

    • Spot on Oz.
I do not comment on this development.
The poor sheeple can remain in ignorance.
Not our job to fix stupid, they are far beyond stupid.

      • Ned – the sheep will need our assistance in understanding why their view of the world is soon to fall apart. We, who have come to know the real purpose for why we have been able to comprehend what is soon coming, and that which can no longer be avoided, should not forget that we have been given a duty to encourage the Truth to be set amongst the sheep.

What we cannot be responsible for is the individual actions of many, who will not be able to cope with what will soon make all of them aware of.

Once the Truth is revealed it cannot be undone or forgotten.

          I was not sick.’

        • Ned – completely understand your position, but can you remain aloof from those who will really need your assistance?

    • Aussiemal – could not agree more with your assessment.

Hope others can find the time to understand exactly what Trump has done, and as you suggest, not just for his own country but for the entire planet.

      • What we’re currently witnessing is a fore-runner to the anti-christ system which means that things are going to get worse not better. By telling people otherwise you’re doing them a grave dis-service

    • Mal,
If good comes of it I will be the first to salute and say thank heavens I was wrong.

      But first some (rhetorical) questions:

Who/what is BlackRock? Who runs it and who are they accountable to?
Does this mean that Mueller (don’t these people have first names … aah, Robert that’s it) was working undercover WITH Trump all along to gather evidence on the Clintons et al?
Will Julian Assange be released and exonerated?
Will they be tearing down all monuments and portraits of and stripping Teddy Roosevelt and Woody Wilson of their gold medals?
Will this affect the 17th amendment and the Income Tax Revenue Act – stepping stones towards the Federal Reserve Act?
Is this what Obama meant when he said “Welcome to the end of the Republic”?

In the Gumshoe article “The Lighter Side of the Beer Virus”, Dee wrote this excellent editor’s note:

Editor’s note: We know “they” lied about 9/11; they lied about the Port Arthur Massacre, and about the toxic and contaminated vaccines. They are silent on the man-made engineered virus and are lying about 5G. Now we await “their” vaccine. However, this is a post for the lighter moments of the “lockdown”. Thanks to Gil for forwarding the photos below.

      So – when I see”

Full and complete disclosure, penalties and reparations administered against those responsible for
      • the 9/11 act of terror against the people of the United States and of the entire globe
      • the Port Arthur act of terror against the people of Australia.
      • the manufacture and dispensation of toxic and contaminated vaccines, along with the contamination of our atmosphere with ‘god-only-knows’ what toxic chemicals.
Withdrawal of occupation troops from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria – with full reparations and war trials (why not use the ICC?) for all perpetrators and accomplices.
Full reparations and rebuilding of Libya as a sovereign state.

Enough for now – conscious of self-restraint word limit

Reparations won’t be a problem because ’money’ is infinite after all.

The very fact that such a cryptic game is being played is all I need to know. They could have just sent a small contingent into the Fed, made arrests and declared it nationalised – did they really need The Virus ™?

Remind me – is it Q-Anon that uses the catch phrase “we never forget, we never forgive”?

  5. The only way of getting on top of any perceived conspiracy is to wake up to the fact that the strings aren’t being pulled by any mere mortal.

That doesn’t mean that allowing one’s self to be used as a puppet is without consequences, but everyman is equally accountable in that regard.

    • One fairly obvious sign that no government on earth was consciously in on the game was the complete lack of preparedness, e. g. none of the effected Countries had a proper rationing system ready to roll: Transparent incompetence in dealing with any sort of national emergency is the last thing any ruler-ship would want/need.

        • So why the attempt to dump the onus of consumer-shortages on those affected?

I realise said ruse has been largely successful but that’s beside the point

        • Politicians never say anything ad lib re any matter of any real import. That has no bearing whatsoever on being butt ignorant about the way the spirit world works

          • Correction re that 2nd sentence: what I meant was that there’s currently no country on earth that’s being run by anyone who has any real understanding of the spirit world

  6. Fair Dinkum – you have really triggered me – I’ll get to the point in a moment

Long story, but I claim every moment I am home as self reclusing …then I break curfew and go out when I need something essential – such as peanuts or popcorn – or ice cream – and then I return to self reclusing. My stats are pretty good – very responsible indeed. But that’s not the point.

Anyway, I had to pop out for some such essential treats a while ago and when I do, I always have an audio book to listen to. I prefer those times to be somewhat light and entertaining, yet still insightful, and so I have recently finished listening to Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (not so light – part 1 really has some deep thoughts) and Villette by Charlotte Brontë (a bit lighter). Not the point either but plenty of material for book reviews some other time perhaps.

Anyway, I am currently listening to The Secret Life of William Shakespeare by Jude Morgan. Not a random choice, but why I am doing so is another story entirely and still not the point.

We are talking around 1580, and one term that repeatedly comes up is “Debtors’ Prisons”. It also reminded me of the fact that the majority ‘settlers’ who were transported to Terra Australis in 1788 were actually convicts in chains – including children – displaced from their families – rather like the first stolen generation as it were. They were ‘criminals’ guilty of defaulting on debt and various other petty crimes. I am sure others can elaborate more on this part of our history as I am just clicking and exploring.

Of course without usurers there would be no debtors – and no debt slaves. (You see where I am going?)

So now you see how your reference to the ‘Comfort’ rang alarm bells.

The rich historical tapestry of the debtors’ prison story, not only dates back to Shakespeare’s time but was certainly prolific in Captains Cook and Phillip’s time. I remember learning about the overcrowded prison hulks in school and while I cringed at the thought, I never really engaged in the reality of life’s miserable circumstances so long ago.

Some of the names in the list of prison hulks are quite fascinating.

    Prison ships
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison_ship

“In New South Wales, Australia, hulks were also used as juvenile correctional centers. In 1813 a tender document was advertised in *the Australian* newspaper for the supply of bread to prisoners aboard a prison hulk in Sydney Harbour.”

“Between 1880 and 1891 the hulk Fitzjames was used as a reformatory by the South Australian colonial government in Largs Bay. The ship kept about 600 prisoners at a time, even though it was designed to carry 80 or so crewmembers.”

Anyway, happy researching – I forgot the bloody point.

I detect a lot of truth in that last statement. Maybe we might get a paradigm shift with the dumb-asses around us, I won’t hold out for it, I’ll just quietly keep prepping…

  9. Well the trusters are slow to wake up but they do eventually wake up, in time to be stooged by the next operator, until they learn. The patriarch of the Rockefellers was the original snake-oil salesman and he is quoted as saying “I swindle my kids every chance I get – I want to make them sharp”. Now Rockefellers, Bushs, Clintons etc run all sorts of operations you don’t hear much about. What are we doing in Afghanistan, the mainstream press ponders. Clearly all they have is goats and poppy farms. What on earth could they all be fighting about, and why are we there for decades, when clearly Taliban has nothing to do with Saudi mental patients crashing a plane into a paddock in Pennsylvania. Mr Trump told everyone way back when 9-11 happened, “planes could not do that, it was bombs” but nobody was listening back then. My Trump ended all the wars from North Korea to everywhere but he is still reviled and the reason is a new category for you – the “undiscerning”, actually a form of bigotry similar to inverted snobbery etc.
[btw. To convince the trusters there is something in the fake moon landing story, for example, there has to be shown there is some realistic possibility of a genuine premise, and here it is, Stanley Kubrick was apparently approached to make backup video in case the moonwalk went wrong, you see, his work on 2001 was so impressive. Having a strong anti-war bias SK went on to do the film Barry Lyndon with an unforgettable anti-war scene in the middle, later copied in a homage by Mel Gibson. SK apparently didn’t approve of the elite pedophile scene either (which we aren’t talking about much since the virus, and which has mysteriously not appeared on your list, possibly you have already had something planted on your pillow) and so SK exposed it in his final film for which he died I think a few days later and subsequently half the film was cut, though you can still work out some of the cutting if you study it enough, I would guess there are some kids in some of those scenes. So watch out for those elite pedophiles, almost nothing can get you in more trouble than messing with kiddie fiddlers.]
It will be a marvel if Mr Trump makes it to the end of his second term, with Pompeio breathing down his neck, but you never know, he may be forced to sell out at some point just to save his whole family being done over Kennedy style. The story that JFK jr faked his death and is actually “Q” gives me some hope but looking back over human history I don’t expect much. Abraham Lincoln was sorted out within days of winning his second term and this could be Trump’s fate. If you see Pompeio promoted to vice president it will be a clear giveaway it was an inside job.

  10. Completely off topic, but I could not help but share this little treat.

In the process of origami, the children used their fingers to develop their brains, and children who were making simple airplanes and wind chimes reached a level where they could make sculptures with paper. In this process, children’s creativity and their motoric skills develop. So it’s a good play.”

Tell me that the minute following that sequence doesn’t make you smile.

Meanwhile, the cultural Marxists have our preschool children questioning their gender.

    (I hope that hyperlink worked)

    • Yes. Prof Iannodis is good. And there are 21 other virologists and epidemiologists giving statements on 24 and 28 March at off-guardian.org. They are not speculating, with the exception of Dr Wodarg (see below) on how and why this Plandemic (my word, not theirs) is being run.

They are pointing out eg. that overall mortality figures in the EU currently are below average; that special circumstances apply in Italy only (air pollution, age distribution, statistical deceptiveness in official causes of death, etc. ). ( I add to that: large no. of Chinese textile workers in N Italy with direct flights to Wuhan)

And that currently if Covid19 had not been identified everybody would think that the 2020 respiratory disease season in the N Hemisphere was just slightly severe, nothing more.

I say that those Italian facts are behind the noticeable Oz media use of Italy as the bogeyman to come.

Note that medium.com suppressed an anti-Narrative article, apparently and that Uni Mainz in Germany deleted the email address of a leading biol. scientist there once he had gone public: his statement is at off-guardian.org. .

However, pulmonologist Dr Wodarg in Germany, who led the charge against Big Pharma in respect of the swine flu scam of 2009, does get onto even German state-run TV; his videos are on Youtube with English subtitles.

  11. I was told by a trusted friend, who decided to getaway for a few days with caravan, had to return because he was told all the parks were commandeered by government to stop the VIRUS.
Probably make good makeshift detention centers or such come to think of it.

  12. Thanks Chris. This Stanford Uni. Professor of Medicine & Epidemiology is basically saying (very carefully-’cause he wants to keep his job) that Covid-19 is a massive beat up by the WHO/UN. You mean they’ve been lying to us all……AGAIN!

  13. This deserves more publicity-I’m still wiping the tears from my face and my stomach muscles ache from laughter..Laughter is the best medicine against “muh virus”

  14. AussieMal , I’ve been following your comments for quite a while & there’s not a lot I disagree with.

But, I’ve spent the last day trying to find confirmation that , as your posting of yesterday states , the Federal Reserve & the Treasury Dept were merging.

All I could find was some less-than-reliable blogs speculating on it.

Can you show me something official ?

In any event, even if it were to come to fruition , what of it ?

Do we need a MEGA-department that the merged Fed/Treasury would undoubtedly be , centralising even more power into the hands of the Rothschild affiliated banking cartel ?

How would this mega-agency positively impact on society , as you claim ?

Nothing less then complete abolition of the Fed is needed so that the Zio-cabal affiliated bankers are robbed of control of their money-from-nothing issuance capacity.

As Nathan Rothschild said two centuries ago : “Give me control of a nation’s money and I care not who makes its laws ” .

Then, interest rates can be determined by market mechanisms – rather than being manipulated lower by the Fed to increase the likelihood of Trump’s re-election .

There is not a living entity on Earth that has done more to demand for more transparency in the workings of the U.S Federal Reserve than former Congressman Ron Paul .

He, & he alone , campaigned for decades to have the Fed audited.

In fact, the ‘ End the Fed ‘ movement was THE slogan of Ron Paul’s 2012 run for the Presidency – started by his campaign / followers.

I think the ‘ red flag ‘ that signalled this info was likely disinformation was its source – the X22 Report ( which has been peddling dubious stuff for quite a while ).

As for Nemesis's comment that the 1000 berth hospital bed ship will soon be filled with criminals on their way to Gitmo , that really cracked me up.

    Too funny.

Nemesis really should look into stand-up comedy.

The fact is , Trump’s first term is nearly over & he’s arrested , indicted , exposed NO ONE.

    Not a SINGLE ENTITY .

    Zilch .

    Zero .

If he was ‘ Fair Dinkum ‘ , then …. well , he’d be one very knowledgeable & thoughtful contributor to the posts on GumShoe.

But he’s not fit to walk in Fair Dinkum’s shadow .

The fact is, if Trump was the real deal , he would round up / arrest / shackle in leg irons all the 9/11 conspirators & the Clintons for starters.

He’d publicly state that 9/11 , the JFK assassinations & the Oklahoma City Bombings were inside jobs perpetuated by the Mossad working in conjunction with traitors within the U.S govt / Intell / military agencies.

    He won’t – because he’s an obsequious PIECE-OF-IT working hand-in-glove for the same Zio-masters.

I’ll leave you with Nemesis’s trademark ending ( slightly modified to reflect the true state of the world ) :

WWLG1WGA = Where We LEMMINGS Go One , We Go All .

Well, I'm not one of the Lemmings & I won't be jumping off that cliff into the abyss .

    • “Nemesis really should look into stand-up comedy.”

in fact, as a child, when asked by his parents – “what do you want to be when you grow up?”

      and they were answered thus..

“I want to be a comedian!”

well, they just laughed… and so he became a self proclaimed internet authority on the evils of islam instead.

      same thing really.
