Here Comes the Avalanche, Part 3: South Africa Can’t Get Out of This One

Bird Island off the coast of South Africa

by Dee McLachlan

This is a story of “suicides”, murder and a pedophilia ring.

In South Africa, I had a good friend in high school whose father was a member of parliament, John Wiley. In the 1980s, that man committed suicide, and it was a shock for everyone. I never heard the reason – or whether it was really a suicide. Amazingly the story now comes out — pedophiles in high places, and disposable children, just as in the UK.

We have been running the Avalanche series at GumshoeNews with a main focus on Australia. I shall now change the planned order of articles to insert this sizzling story about Bird Island. Last night my brother in Cape Town sent me an article by Marianne Thamm. I will quote from it and paraphrase it.

Full credit goes to Thamm, and to the two persons who had collaborated on a book, The Lost Boys of Bird Island, namely, Mark Minnie, a former narcotics investigator, and Ms Chris Steyn.

Ms Chris Steyn and Mark Minnie

Minnie has now died (13 August) in what is called a suicide but which is clearly a blatant example of the kill-a-writer-and-call-it-a-suicide theme. He did not own the gun lying near his body. But, it was a mistake for the authorities to kill him. That clinches the deal as far as I am concerned.

A book review describes how Minnie and Steyn spent much time investigating the case independently of each other, but came together thirty years later to write the book.

“…they have finally ripped the veil off the horrendous story of official complicity in the criminal abuse, rape and possible murder of children, mainly black and drug-dependent, who were frequently taken to Bird Island off Port Elizabeth by helicopter (sometimes military) to “entertain” men of power.”

The Minister of Defence

Marianne Thamm’s article appears in The Daily Maverick and tells of the former minister of Defence, Magnus Malan, who flew children out to an island off the coast of Port Elizabeth. She writes:

“Mark Minnie, who lived in China where he was a teacher, was in South Africa conducting further investigations in Port Elizabeth – the city where the paedophile ring operated back in the 1980s… He was also in South Africa for the launch of the book he co-authored with Chris Steyn…

“According to the book, the ring would abduct or pay young street children, fly them in military helicopters to Bird Island where… the boys would be abused.”

I did some filming near Bird Island about 5 years ago. It is famous for having a guano “mine.” (Guano is bird droppings, usable as fertilizer). As has now been revealed, Dave Allen, former holder of the guano concession, figures into the pedophile story. Note: Allen was a deep sea diver and a police reservist.

Magnus Malan (and all his medals)

The most important character in the current exposé is the man who held South Africa’s Defence portfolio from 1976 to 1987, Magnus Malan. He was born in 1930 and died 2011. The following a short item about him, from The Guardian, will give you a sense of “where we were at” in those terrible days in my country:

During 1990, Malan’s position as minister of defence came under threat following public revelations about South African Defence Force paramilitary death squads operating against civilians in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal. The following year it emerged that the apartheid regime had financed the mainly Zulu Inkatha Freedom party, and Malan was shifted to the water affairs and forestry ministry, retiring from politics in February 1993.” [Emphasis added]

The Guardian also tells us:

“Malan … matriculated at Dr Danie Craven’s Physical Education Brigade, Kimberley, in 1948. Malan took the opportunity of following the first military degree course for officers, completing his BSc Mil at Pretoria University in 1953. He later underwent training in the US, and in 1973 became chief of the South African army.” Emphasis added]

Paying the Matron

One story that appears in the “Lost Boys of Bird Island” book has to do with a child being taken to hospital by military helicopter many years ago. It seems a gun was inserted into the boy’s anus and went off, accidentally or otherwise. This led Minnie, who was the a cop, to search the home of guano man Dave Allen. Much kiddie porn was found, and so he was arrested. Allen confessed to statutory rape, and then started to “sing”, ratting on his pedophile colleagues, including John Wiley (my classmate’s dad) and Malan (the Defence minister). The Cape Times spiked the story.

Both Allen and Wiley died – from apparent suicides – shortly after Minnie had arrested Allen for the possession of child pornography. Malan personally “swept” the Wiley’s house, then left with two boxes of effects.

A side issue that came out in the book is stated by Thamm as follows:

“The boy who was shot in the anus…  had been delivered by military helicopter to a whites-only hospital by three men in suits. No hospital records are kept, a nurse friend tells Minnie of utmost secrecy, and the elderly matron is given a sum of R10 000 and transferred, tearful and scared.

” ‘High-ranking Pretoria’ then demand and confiscate Minnie’s docket, and he is transferred from PE to the Soweto Riot Squad – a really dangerous job. A bullet through his windscreen, and his car going up in flames on being started by his girlfriend, show the evil intentions of what Minnie suspects is the covert and murderous Civil Co-operation Bureau.”

Note the name: Civil Co-operation Bureau!

Sadly, the Writer, Minnie, Has Now Been Killed

Marainne Thamm says she was in contact with Minnie a week ago. No sign of suicidal inclinations! But days ago he died and “a statement has been issued that no ‘foul play’ is suspected.”

“The death of author Mark Minnie may have elevated interest in his book tenfold. It has also drawn widespread suspicion of foul play that is, ironically, an amplified echo of the strange circumstances surrounding the “suicide” of two key characters in The Lost Boys of Bird Island.

“Minnie was found with a bullet wound to the head, and a firearm near his body, a near replica of the deaths of Dave Allen, the first of the Bird Island paedophile ring to “sing” after being found in possession of pornography and arrested for statutory rape, and John Wiley, then minister of environmental affairs and tourism, found on his bed and shot through the temple.”

A New Shreddergate Looms

Marainne Thamm provides this historical note:

“At the weekend Rapport newspaper confirmed that former State President PW Botha had personally called, in March 1987, for Minnie’s docket relating to Malan, Wiley and Allen to be removed from Minnie’s office in PE. A retired colonel, who did not wish to be identified, confirmed the removal of the docket to the writer Herman Jansen.

“He said that PW Botha had ordered Brigadier Ernie Schnetler, then the divisional commissioner in Port Elizabeth, to get the docket on his desk at 7.30 the following morning.”

Similarity of the African Exposé to Australia and the UK

We are now all in this together. The hallmarks are similar in each of the three countries’ exposes on pedophiles in high places — including to was happening at Washington DC. (I wrote about “Pedophiles in Power” in February 2015.) These similarities are:

1. the stealing (or luring) of vulnerable children (flying them in some cases)

2. the rape and in some cases murder of those children

3. the paying off of witnesses (Fiona Barnett could presumably have asked for millions!)

4. the monotonous reporting of suspicious deaths as suicides or “by natural causes”

5. the shredding of documents

6. the killing of reporters

7. the mass media’s editorial decisions to hush up the stories

8. the dependence on cooperative doctors if things go wrong, and

9. the FACT THAT TOP MEMBERS OF GOVERNMENT ARE INVOLVED

10. inaction of the police

11. the ease with which people can shelve the whole thing on the grounds that it is unbelievable: “Nobody would do that,”  “There is no proof,” etc.

I think it will help South Africa that Oz has preceded it. It should also help Oz the British pedophiles were named earlier – although none of them have been brought to book. As far as I know, the late Jimmy Savile has not even suffered the rescinding of his many honors. Nor has The House of Commons taken up the matter of former Prime Minister Edward Heath.

Mary W Maxwell, Opinion Editor of GumshoeNews, suggests that we now consider the matter resolved. “We need to get on with it – stop sleuthing and think fast how to deal with it.”

Any ideas you have, for Australia or the world, can be stated in the Comments below.  And if you can help work out how the upper crusts in these countries got connected, or why they had the same pathetic modus vivendi, please contribute. Speculations accepted! Confessions welcome!

      • Yes – only after vast number of population in Belgium took to the streets to protest – temporarily disrupting the cover up. Details are gory.
Incontrovertible proof of vast corruption at the highest levels of govt and police.

    • Mary, you left us hanging, expecting more dots to connect. You wrote in part 1:

“The main piece of news here – and it is regrettable that members of the Beaumont family will have to read such a thing – is that two police women were in the McIntyre house that night. ”

So, it’s the main piece of news in your introductory article. Who were they? What SAPOL unit were they in? Whose testimony puts them there? Are they still alive?

Nothing further on any of these burning questions, apparently. Why?

  2. Down the bottom of the comments on part 2 you wrote this Mary:

“Part 3 will knock you for a loop. Andrew has a secret that goes way beyond the story of children on a beach, way beyond body men, way beyond pedophilia.”

So where is that big secret in part 3?
Have you changed your mind because so much of what you wrote was incorrect, or did Andrew tell you not to post it because you’ve made a laughing stock of the Mc’s?

I feel for Ruth in all of this, and also Rachel, she has come out on social media and said she didn’t tell you all of what you wrote in part 1, i’m guessing it’s the part about the police woman being at their house on the night, which is, was, and will always be, untrue!

My apologies if these questions have already been asked, I haven’t had a chance to read the replies yet.

      • Please, read the article (Deni and Mel). As this is breaking in South Africa…. I wrote:

“We have been running the Avalanche series at GumshoeNews with a main focus on Australia. I shall now CHANGE the PLANNED ORDER of articles to insert….”

RE: your comment “you’ve made a laughing stock of the Mc’s?” I for one am NOT laughing at anyone.

So which house were the police woman at? Investigating? And why?

        • Yes, the police wom(en)? They were there…stay tuned…as if it was going to be filled in later. Will it be? Why mention them if it’s a dead-end?

What area of SAPOL were they from? What were their names? Are they still alive? Whose testimony put them at the scene?

        • I saw the comment about changing the order of articles Dee, that means little to me, the promised article was not shown, the African story should have been on another series altogether!!

On part 1 of this series Dee, Mary said there were two police woman at the Mc’s house the night of the murders, this is completely untrue.
Rachel wouldn’t know, she wasn’t born yet, and Ruth has been telling her story for years and not once mentioned it..

The only mention of two police woman was just recently when a new witness came forward to say he walked in on the perps abusing the children in his home, his room in fact, the child was given an overdose and when the men left one of them called the woman police to come out and take care of him.
This witness has been in touch with Major Crime and has been interviewed extensively, so we’re led to believe.
You need to do some research on it, although it is quite recent, back in May or April it was first mentioned by the team that is doing the investigating on this.

Believe it or not, i’m just the messanger!!

          • I didn’t know you were organizing how we publish and what the series consist of. That’s my task. Part 1 was authored by Mary.

  3. This : https://ewn.co.za/2018/08/17/adriaan-vlok-i-don-t-believe-paedophile-claims-against-magnus-malan

CAPE TOWN – Apartheid-era law and order minister Adriaan Vlok says he doesn’t believe the allegations against former apartheid-era defence minister Magnus Malan which are contained in controversial book The Lost Boys of Bird Island.

The book places Malan at the centre of an alleged paedophile network that targeted young coloured boys during apartheid.

It was allegedly run by several senior National Party politicians.

Vlok says the claims are shocking.

“It’s very shocking. In the past, none of these allegations was brought to my attention.”

He says he knew Malan and struggles to believe the claims.

“He was a wonderful person. As far as I remember him, he was not a guy attracted to men or children. He was honest… and always honest with me.”

Earlier this week, co-author of the book, Mark Minnie, was found dead at his home.

Meanwhile, the FW de Klerk Foundation has called for a proper investigation into allegations made in the book.

Chairperson of the foundation, Dave Stewart, says that the information exposed in the book remain allegations until it is properly investigated.

Stewart says like any serious crime, the allegations made by Minnie and co-author Chris Steyn must be probed.

  4. “Stewart says like any serious crime, the allegations made by Minnie and co-author Chris Steyn must be probed.”

    But if course.

    May I assist?

The book says there were three ministers – Malan, Wiley, and one who is still living but whom the book could not name for legal reasons. (I.e, the publisher did not want to get sued.) So Chris Steyn can pass the name to the Prosecutor. Or if SA has grand juries, to a jury foreman. Sorry, foreperson.

If that method is unavailing, we can “do a Fiona.” She just got up there and yelled. Luckily there was on good senator into the mix also – Bill Heffernan. We were also lucky to have a Royal Comish. If SA does not have that sort of thing, victims can run their own “Loyal Comish” out of a kitchen or at a bus-stop or any place really.

This is an aside, but could be relevant to whether there was or was not a pedo ring. Check the fingerprints on the “suicide letter.” Whoever’s they are needs to be accused of murder, right?

And it won’t do for the press to carry on about Minnie’s death in a deceitful way as that would be the crime of coverup. Correct me if I’m wrong. Being an accessory to murder just does not pay.

  5. This is from thesouthafrican.com: the son of Minnie said:

“When dad finished this book he sent me a copy. I got through the first 2 chapters and then stopped, Tears and a heavy heart, knowing my father was about to dive into something that could kill him.”:

“We have always had our different opinions and an opposite take on life. I never understood why he was so angry yet so protective of me whilst growing up. This storie (sic) really changed my perspective.”
