Snowden and the Scots

1

The recent interview with Edward Snowden starts to unravel the full extent of how our democracies are at the edge of a precipice (or maybe already over it). Unaccountable spy agencies (and the corporate or military entities enmeshed in this) have a complete and overwhelming advantage of never been taken over or superseded. They now can (by spying) outmaneuver or crush any competition or dissenting voice. They can steal any industrial secret, manipulate dissenting politicians, move towards a Global Government run by a cabal? – well really do anything they like without oversight and seemingly with impunity. I wonder if President’s and Prime Ministers are privy to anything they do? So what is their real purpose? To keep us safe – or to keep us safely away (and under ‘control’)?

Now Snowden has been elected to the post of student rector at Glasgow University in Scotland, one of Britain’s oldest universities. University officials said the computer analyst beat three other candidates in an online vote that attracted a record turnout to win the three-year role of rector at the university, which dates back to 1451. Chris Cassells, Snowden’s spokesman for the campaign, said Glasgow University had a “proud and virtuous tradition” of making significant statements through its rectors. “Today we have once more championed this idea by proving to the world that we are not apathetic to important issues such as democratic rights,”

But Prime Minister Tony Abbott has a different view “…This gentlemen Snowden, or this individual Snowden, who has betrayed his country and in the process has badly, badly damaged other countries that are friends of the United States…” Jan 2014

And what did a Pentagon official speaking to Buzzfeed state “I would love to put a bullet in his head,” (Liberty Voice)

“If I am a traitor, who did I betray. I gave all of my information to the American Public. To American Journalists who were reporting on American issues. If they see that as treason, I think people really need to consider Who do they think they are working for. The public is suppose to be their boss, not their enemy”  Edward Snowden.
